23.01.2022 SPECIAL GUEST AT SUPPORTED PLAYGROUP SESSIONS // Thanks to a Landcare grant, supported playgroup was very privileged to have Wotjobaluk Elder, Ron Marks, attend recent sessions to teach the children about his family's history and customs. Ron gave the kids an opportunity to work with materials that had been used for tens of thousands of years such as the 30,000 year old grinding stone to make face paint. He helped them to identify Echidna diggings in the Edenhope Flora Reser...ve and pointed out the native Yams used as traditional food. He also explained the rules of only killing animals for food and taking what was needed and no more. We were most interested to learn that Ron’s culture is matriarchal. It was quite timely too that these sessions coincided with the 2020 #NAIDOC week. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe Thank you Ron!

12.01.2022 A message from the mayor - Bruce Meyer Its time for patience in West Wimmera Shire, as we eagerly await the relaxation of restrictions in regional Victoria. Things might start to change in the very near future, but we must also be prepared to wait a bit longer if things dont go our way. All we can do is continue to do our part in keeping numbers low. West Wimmera residents have been doing a fantastic job at this already throughout 2020, with only one COVID-19 case ever reco...rded here (as per the DHHS media site, which records the official numbers). However, that doesnt mean we can be complacent and even though the virus might seem far away, if we dont continue to practice social distancing and follow the restrictions, it could be on our doorstep before we know it. The more we can do locally to keep the virus at bay, the better our chances are of getting state borders re-opened and restrictions eased. As always, the messaging remains the same look after each other. Please continue to check on your neighbors, particularly if they are elderly, and ensure you keep in touch with family and friends by virtual means. Keep yourself safe and use common sense. If you or someone you know needs a helping hand, please call the regions Rural Outreach Program intake worker on 1300 688 732. West Wimmera Shire Council staff have continued to run programs to keep people in our communities engaged. Over the past few weeks there have been a number of online youth events, including virtual treasure hunts, cooking and art competitions, and live music streamed through social media. Keep an eye on the media over the next few weeks as restrictions start to ease and make sure you are clear on exactly what you can and cannot do at each stage. More information can be found on the DHHS website or vic.gov.au. Bruce Meyer Mayor West Wimmera Shire Council
