25.01.2022 Writing Western Sydney: The Readings is a weekly series of videos available on the WestWords YouTube channel. 1967, This Is It! Written by Lowell Tarling... You may finish school with no plans, no money, and no direction. But if all you want is to play guitar with your teeth, smash a Rickenbacker or grow your hair long - then being in a high school band could be the last thing you need... It is 1967. Tom is 18, and ready... Semi-autobiographical in nature, '1967, This Is It!' embraces the journey of Thomas Truscott - wannabee rock god and all round misfit as he careens from disaster to discovery in his last year of school, battling the establishment, prefects, the Vietnam war and most of all, himself. This novel combines the cunning wit of Lowell Tarling with the atmospheric pop art of the iconic Martin Sharp. About the author Lowell Tarling is a Katoomba-based writer, poet and artist, and the author of over one hundred books, many of which are co-authored, or ghost-written. Others are biographies of such characters as Michael Chamberlain, Martin Sharp and Tiny Tim, as well as stories of iconic brands such as Drizabone and the Beechworth Bakery. He is also the author of several novels, including '1967,This Is It!', recently been re-released by ETT Imprint. www.lowelltarling.com.au 1967, This Is It! 13.01.2022 Greeting kittens, Ernest H here. Yes, it is a long weekend (let’s face it, for me every weekend is a long weekend) but that does not preclude us from our ongoing quest for the perfect whiskey sour. Nor does it excuse us from pursuing the perfect story. Tonight I am thrilled to welcome Rawah Arja to the Club. She will be regaling us with tales tall and true, and discussing her journey from teacher to Tik Tok star and debut novelist. It’s to be held on Zoom, of course. What els...e? I now have to add that to my daily routine rise, ablute, prepare and drink whiskey sour, smoke cigar, chat with cats about their extra toes, prepare large jug of Long Island Iced Tea, smoke cigar, clean shotgun, go fishing, search for Zoom password, prepare a dirty martini, discard dirty martini in deference to another whiskey sour, smoke cigar, abandon Zoom call, retire. I look forward to greeting you at the door in a resplendent smoking jacket. Shoes optional. 10.01.2022 ***URGENT FUN OPPORTUNITY*** We had this message come across our desk this morning from the Feminist Writers Festival regarding their event this weekend. It's two years since they were in Sydney for our 2018 festival and while an in-person festival is not possible in this unusual year, they are thrilled to be delivering their usual celebration of Australia’s best feminist thinkers, writers and activists, in FWF2020.... They're hosting interactive Zoom panels on our festival day, Saturday 14 November, accompanied by specially commissioned essays available to read before the event, and capping the day off with a bout of Craftivism. Plus, we’re producing a free podcast series, FWFtalks, which is currently being released each Friday. Across these platforms, they're covering the big issues of the day: violence, inequities in our health and legal systems, ecofeminism, sustainable feminism and intersectionality. The beauty of a virtual event is that you can join in from anywhere - and they'd love to have you. As a special offer, please use the code FWF2020_Friends at the checkout for 15% off any ticket type. Click this link https://mailchi.mp//support-fwfs-community-of-courageous-w there is a special giveaway from their partners at Gleebooks. We hope to see you next weekend at FWF2020 - check out the full program. Team FWF and WestWords
