10.01.2022 Today on the tools- #todayonthetools Stud Gun. This stud gun is fuckin mental. Each stud has a raised point on the end to locate it into the centre popped location mark, and once located you pull the trigger and blast 1600 amps through the stud and into the plate for a full fusion weld. The sound is awesome, like lightsabers or a power line gone down in a storm but yeah anyway... The stud machine is connected to a 33KVA generator outside the shed. That first vid is 20 stu...ds in just under 10 minutes. It was my first go so could be quicker after a time. The second vid is the power cables from the stud machine to the generator. They literally flinch when the trigger is pulled due to the high flow of electricity. The other vids and pics are just a few different angles etc The items receiving studs are then moved away from the stud area to be fabricated and welded to various assemblies. See more
10.01.2022 Zinc refinery - Had a stub come through that was ordered short so had a 16mm gap to fill. Usually a gap like that can be filled by using a backing bar but these are all full strength UT tested connections that will be erected with tensioned reo, so have to be complete welds. We use ceramic backing tiles to fill bigger gaps but this is the first time Ive ever tried using the 13mm round tile with the flat tile pushed up against it to cover the full gap. I didnt even tell anyone I was trying it cos I didnt think it would work but as you can see from the last pic the back side of the weld looked better than the front

07.01.2022 Maker Monday - #makermonday This weeks maker Monday is a beautiful story of adaptation. Trudie @sculpturebytrudie came into metal art almost by accident and knew it was to be pursued, Ill let her tell it... Ok so my journey started when I was at uni studying fine art in 2010, I was a ceramic artist, but always had a love for all things rusty, whilst at uni I had some metal plinths made for me to display my ceramic pieces, but I became obsessed with these plinths (they are l...ike my babies) they have followed me around for years. Anyway in 2016/17 I decided that I needed to work with metal and went on a short intro into welding course, basically told me how to turn on and load a MIG welder. From there I became full on involved and my entire art practice changed. I brought myself a little flux core mig and taught myself the basics, then eventually moved up to get my first gas mig, slowly I am building up my workshop space with loads of excellent tools, and developing my business. The welding community on here is awesome, and everyday I'm inspired by people. My welds ain't pretty, but they do what I set out to do, and I love what I do, so all round it's a win win . With amazing works in so many mediums from resin to ceramic and all of this beautiful metalwork Ill say its a win!!! Thankyou so much for sharing your story and beautiful pieces .
