25.01.2022 Conservationist, Joel Fostin, wants to prevent dieback of Pandanus, a beautiful palm-like tree in SE Queensland. Over 50% of the population has been lost due to pest infestation, thus affecting the health of the whole coastal ecosystem. The dead trees along the coast are heartbreaking to see. The project that Wettenhall helped support involved monitoring and mitigation - Joel used a drone to map trees, surveys to investigate the pests, stem injecting, and direct seeding of new trees. Joel is working passionately on biocontrols to save Pandanus with limited funding. He needs $18,000 a year to continue monitoring and releasing the biocontrols on the pests. See https://www.facebook.com/pandanusprotection/ or donate to Wettenhall to help us continue to support this valuable work.

24.01.2022 Why is long term monitoring important? Wettenhall is proud to support one of the longest monitoring projects in the world. The Pied Imperial Pigeon count in NQ is in its 55th year of monitoring the PIP at its breeding colony on North Brook Island, off the coast of Cardwell. Monitoring has been able to tell us about the health of the habitat, natural population fluctuations, possible trends, and about other issues like shooting and habitat destruction.Numbers have fluctuated o...ver the years, but recently they have been affected by Cyclone Yasi. Continuing to monitor the bird will give us a better understanding of the impact of cyclones on habitat and species. Our small grants are able to help the group of citizen scientists pay for boat hire. Small grants play an important part of protecting our native habitat and species. https://wettenhall.org.au See more

20.01.2022 The Victorian Malleefowl Recovery Group (VMRG) has small grants available from the Geoff Armstrong Bequest to provide financial support to projects that will make a positive difference to malleefowl conservation and preservation in Victoria or to promote the enhancement of the natural environment for malleefowl in Victoria. Applications for projects in other states will be considered but Victoria must benefit in some way. For more information, please contact Wettenhall Environment Trust https://wettenhall.org.au who will be administering the grants.

19.01.2022 National Science Week 15-23 August 2020. Join the largest bioblitz in Australia’s history and do it for your state. Have you heard of QuestaGame? It’s a free app you download onto your phone, and then go out and record information about native flora and fauna it's great for children or adults alike, it's fun, and you can even do it in your own backyard!! https://questagame.com

19.01.2022 Last weeks of Autumn what a beautiful time of year to look down at the ground. The greenhoods, the fungi, and don’t forget the moss even in the footpath cracks or the gutters if you live in the city. There’s a great guide that will help you identify moss if you want a project. It’s for us down here in the south https://www.fobif.org.au/mosses-of-dry-forests-book/

19.01.2022 Donation time - yes it's that time of the year to make tax deductible donations to the charities of your choice. Here at Wettenhall Environment Trust we are happy to give ourselves a 'plug' - the more donations we get, the more grants we can give out. Your donation goes straight to a grassroots nature conservation project - maybe not the biggest nor the flashiest project, but good projects with citizen scientists helping protect threatened species and habitat https://wettenhall.org.au/invest/make-a-donation/

14.01.2022 What should a good citizen science program look like? Any nature monitoring program should start with a study design, and robust investigative questions about what you are trying to achieve for your intended species. Connecting Country is a community-driven landscape restoration project in central Victoria, amongst the flowering box and ironbark forests. They told a video conference of funders today about their citizen science programs for both woodland birds, and Brush-taile...d Phascogales. Connecting Country shared their 10 year results with funders, and showed they are a 'model' of best practice - they are collaborative, they are surveying long term, they have academic input and rigour, and they have terrific on-ground relationships with landowners. See more information here, and contact Wettenhall for funding opportunities https://connectingcountry.org.au See more

13.01.2022 Who's eating the Lyrebirds? The female Lyrebird has to protect her nest against foxes and cats but also native predators. The Sherbrooke Lyrebird Study Group are studying these predation pressures to see if we can help protect the iconic Australian bird. Cameras were placed at Lyrebird nests in the Sherbrooke Forest in Victoria only to find that while a fox did raid one nest, nest failures in 2019 breeding season were due to a variety of natural cases and weather conditions. They even caught a Grey Shrike Thrush eating a Lyrebird egg! Work will continue on predation, giving information on deer and foxes to Parks Victoria for action, but further work will now look at male Lyrebird mounds and mating success. We look forward to continuing to support this group. https://www.facebook.com/SherbrookeLyrebirdStudyGroup/

12.01.2022 The Karrkad Kanjdji Trust works with Indigenous ranger groups in one of the most culturally rich and biodiverse regions of Australia West and Central Arnhem Land. The KKT has just reported on their Mayh Recovery Project - long term ecological monitoring of small mammals by Indigenous Rangers. They surveyed 60 sites in 2019, and collected mammal data with motion-sensing cameras. Thirty-six rangers have been doing the field work, 600,000+ photos were collected and processed b...y Daluk female rangers and an ecologist. Results are used to inform fire planning and feral animal control. These results are distributed to landholders to engage them in future monitoring and help with land management decisions that may impact on mammal populations. The limited rainfall and hot conditions has an impact on their work, but the monitoring will continue. The group also has projects on the Northern Quoll, ground dwelling birds, and lizards. They've produced a terrific annual report showing all their work on Indigenous Protected Areas which you can find on their website, where you can also donate https://www.kkt.org.au See more

09.01.2022 Gib Wettenhall attended a cultural burning workshop in NE Victoria late last year, as part of a project we supported for the Wooragee Landcare Group. The work takes an interest in Indigenous knowledge and fire. Gib has written a terrific essay about cultural burning as an agent of renewal, and included lots of photos, you can find it here - http://www.empresspublishing.com.au/cultural-burning.html

08.01.2022 WOMEN IN SCIENCE. Don't miss the Melbourne International Film Festival Talks Stories from the Leadership:Women in STEM. Dr Samantha Grover was one of 76 women scientists from around the world who went on a small ship into Antarctic waters for 20 days. The film about the voyage has been sold out, but you can listen to some of the participants talk about their experiences. Samantha was one of our Leadership Development Grant recipients and Wettenhall was pleased to be able to help her take part in this amazing experience which was about providing women scientists with the confidence to leap ahead in the science world. https://2020.miff.com.au//miff-talks-stories-from-the-lea/

07.01.2022 The many faces of the Jack and Albert Rivers. With the support of the Wettenhall Environment Trust we are monitoring water quality at six sites as part of our J...ARR Project. This project builds on the fantastic work by Waterwatch over many years. While we are still in the early stages of analysing our data, we hope to see a marked improvement in the quality of water entering Corner Inlet-Nooramunga compared to 20 years ago. See more
