25.01.2022 Digging Deeper workshop - Group 2 A day spent in the heat at the base of Bartle Frere, participants learnt about about Soil Health with Simon Matttsson. The hosts place was a lovely grazing farm, [ex-dairy] with the cows listening in. The day was the introduction to the nutrient cycle, introducing the microbes involved which generated great discussion within the group. ... All participants left with great enthusiasm to get stuck into their own soil, and get a soil sample done. Can't wait to see the soil test come back and we can learn how to interpret them. #Landcare, #NLP, #soillandfood, #TerrainNRM, #soilhealth

25.01.2022 Our first AGM with attendees in person and also online. It makes a lot of sense given the size of the Wet Tropics region! Chair Keith Noble says questions fro...m the floor relating to funding, funding criteria and Reef Credits were insightful and reaffirmed Terrain's commitment to securing new funding sources. It was great to have representation across many areas we work in and to catch up afterwards with those who came in person. Thanks again.

15.01.2022 We have a new $200,000 grants round for projects that will improve critical rainforest habitat. We're doing something a little different this time and contac...ting 250 landholders from across the Wet Tropics region whose properties border world-heritage areas and meet criteria ranging from being within the region’s top-six cassowary corridors to being a potential littoral rainforest refugia from sea level rise and storm surges. This grants round is also open to recovery team members. It's part of our Building Rainforest Resilience project, funded through the Australian Government's National Landcare Program. 12.01.2022 Investing in new tools to tackle the threat of feral cats on our native wildlife Last week, the Australian Government announced it had committed $2 million t...o upscale the production of two feral cat control tools, the Curiosity bait for feral cats and Felixer Grooming Traps. The Curiosity bait for feral cats is a small sausage with a hard plastic pellet containing a humane toxin (para-aminopropiophenone, or PAPP). The bait has been designed to minimise the risk to native animals. A hard pellet limits access by animals other than cats. The Felixer Grooming trap is an innovative and automated tool to help control feral cats and foxes. This tool uses sensors to distinguish target cats and foxes from non-target wildlife and humans and sprays the targets with a measured dose of toxic gel. Across Australia the toll of feral cats on our remarkable wildlife is significant. According to Australia's leading scientists each day, more than 3.1 million mammals, 1 million birds and 1.7 million reptiles are killed by cats across Australia. More information about these tools and feral cats can be found at http://environment.gov.au//feral-animals-austra/feral-cats : Felixer cat traps being trialed at Pullen Pullen reserve. This simple model from Dutch research institute Deltares makes it very easy to understand how mangroves protect the coast from the impact of waves. This means that you need to invest less in hard structures for protection, and you need to spend less on maintenance of such structures. Besides this, mangroves provide important ecosystem services, for instance for fisheries, as well. The Netherlands works worldwide to restore mangrove forests and improve coastal protection. #BuildingWithNature See more

01.01.2022 "The evidence is mounting that regenerative agriculture is one of the great stories of hope....[It] has some of the best solutions to solving a lot of our plane...tary ills." Charles Massy runs a 4,500-acre sheep and cattle property at Cooma. "I caused immense damage to this country, perhaps at least a few thousand years' worth," he told Australian Story. He knew that to survive he would have to change. He sold only half the farm and began studying regenerative agriculture, a system of farming which doesn't push the land beyond what it is naturally capable of sustaining without chemical inputs, a system that values a complex and healthy soil. As he watched his land recover, he went back to university in his 50s to do a PhD in human ecology. As part of his thesis, he interviewed 80 of the top regenerative farmers, hearing stories of remarkable turnarounds in landscapes, birdsong and lives. By 2000, Mr Massy himself had become fully regenerative and has now planted 60,000 trees. More on this story tonight on Australian Story, 8:00pm (AEST) ABC TV + iview. https://www.abc.net.au//charlie-massy-regenerativ/12438352
