25.01.2022 Tasting antics ......

25.01.2022 Date: Friday 3 July 2020 Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm Venue: Your home... No costs. July Virtual Wine Guild Evening Big Reds July 2020 Another virtual Wine Guild Extravaganza The days are shorter, the nights are colder and the wood fires are burning. Time to crack open a BIG RED. We're all familiar with Australia's peppery Shiraz, with its dark berry fruit flavours and if you are lucky, a bit of chocolate and Australia's Cabernet Sauvignon with hints of spice, vanilla and dark cherries. BUT let's not forget Grenache which, long since renowned in France and Spain, is growing in popularity. With its perfume and spice, many single varietals are emerging from hots spots Barossa and McLaren Vale. AND of course Malbec originally a blending grape from Bordeaux has had resurgence with Argentina now the foremost producer of the variety. Australia's first Malbecs were planted in the Langhorne creek region in the 1880s but it is now grown in many regions including the Clare Valley and Great Southern. And who has heard of Tannat, which is attracting interest in Australia? An intensely flavoured, high tannin grape variety usually destined for cellaring and the most popular wine in beef-eating Uruguay. Italy can lay claim to delicious robust reds made from Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Amarone, and Primitivo (aka Zinfandel). The Hilltops Region in NSW is producing some great examples of these varieties. AND then there's big and beautiful Durif, one of the highlight wines from Rutherglen, Victoria. One of your hosts Rob Hodge, being an avid collector of Penfolds, will guide us through a few of his Penfolds favourites (other than Shiraz - see below) and test us with a wine quiz which just might include a few Penfolds questions. We encourage you to explore your cellar for some comparisons. WARNING: Beware Shiraz overload as August wine night is Barossa Shiraz vs the Rest. Food Pairing Big reds are best matched with robust meat dishes or strong cheeses and spicy smoked meats. Herb flavoured mushrooms and rich tomato based sauces are also hard to go past to complement your big red. You'll need some crusty bread to mop it all up. Co-host Wendy Harris will whip up one of the Guild's favourites - Mushroom terrine (and might even share the recipe in advance). Join us virtually to share and discuss a selection of wine and matching food offerings as we come together in this era of physical distancing where we may be restricted by physical distance but not by the love of wine At 6 pm on Friday 3 July Set yourself up with your wine selections, food pairings, a pen, and paper.. log in using the Zoom link provided and share in our discovery of the wine styles outlined below. Club Night Link - Friday 3 July 6pm-8pm: https://nteu.zoom.us/j/98182950300 Hope to see you there.

24.01.2022 Tassy Wines Date: Friday 4 October 2019... Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm Venue: Holy Trinity Anglican church hall, 68 Hawthorn Street, Woolloongabba Costs are Members $15 & Guests $25. The theme for the October club night is Tasmanian wine so bring along your favourite Tassy wine. COOL CLIMATE ADVANTAGE Tasmania has a moderate maritime climate, cooled by prevailing westerly winds off the Southern Ocean, providing conditions free of extremes in temperature. Mild spring and summer temperatures, with warm autumn daysandcoolnights allow the grapes to ripen slowly on the vine, resulting in maximum varietal flavour development. This is achieved without losing that essential natural acidity that gives wine both freshness and balance. Your hosts are Kathy and Bruce Hateley The Committee invites each member and each guest to each bring your favourite Tassy wine to share with other members and guests.

20.01.2022 Date: Friday 3 April 2020 Cancelled ... As all governments in Australia are enforcing social distancing due to the COVID19 pandemic, the WGA Committee has, unfortunately, decided to cancel the Club night for April 2020. We will monitor the situation during April to determine if the May club night will proceed. Alternatively in May, we could hold an online Club night with members tasting and describing their wine of choice over one of the social videoing platforms. Everybody stay safe and maintain a safe distance from your nearest fellow wine drinker

18.01.2022 Date: Friday 6 March 2020 Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm Venue: Holy Trinity Anglican church hall, 68 Hawthorn Street, Woolloongabba... Costs are Members $15 & Guests $25. Supporting fire-affected wine regions One of the best ways we can assist fire-affected areas is to support their businesses. The most directly affected wine region in Australia was the Adelaide Hills with more than 30% of vineyards burnt to the ground. Some producers lost everything: vines, winery, cellar door and home. Kangaroo Island was also affected. Vineyards in Tumbarumba were lost and some producers in the Hunter Valley have said they may produce little if any wine in 2020 due to smoke taint, though it is unclear which wineries that are affected at this point. The Young Guns of Wine have produced a list of affected wineries (https://younggunofwine.com/the-wine-growers-and-makers-dev/) WGAQs March night will focus on regions affected by bushfire. Committee member, Michael McNally, will bring a range of wines from The Islander Estate (Kangaroo Island) and Tomich Wines (Adelaide Hills) to try. Dinner on the night will be a selection of cheeses and nibbles followed by a simple coq au vin and rice. There will be the opportunity on the night to raise money for the Adelaide Hills Wine Region Fire Appeal The Committee invites each member and each guest to each bring along a wine from a winery affected by the bushfires to share with other members and guests. As well you may wish to bring an additional bottle or two to be either auction or raffled on the night to raise money to support the wineries affected by the bushfires..

We will attempt to determine Who is The BestMargaret River or THE REST of WEST ? We will help the challenge along with some back vintage wines from one of our favourite boutique Denmark producers, Moombaki Wines. Baked ham and accompaniments will also be served, to help satisfy your hunger.yumm.

Last time we suggested The Other Families now its The Other Sex WOMEN WINEMAKERS or if youre in despair WINE FOR WOMEN - those special Ladies/Matriarchs. The latter is easily discovered sitting upfront, bold and proud on labels, including: The Patricias (Brown Brothers); The Elizabeths (McWilliams); The Diana Madelines (Cullens); The Eileens (Hardys). However, it can take some delving to find to find those earnestly working away in the wineries. Many believing that pigeonholing by gender is not a good idea and seriously prefer the wines to speak for themselves. But few have issues with Wine Awards acknowledging and lifting profiles. Some suggestions if youre looking Sue Hodder and SarahPigeon (Wynns); Fiona Donald (Seppeltsfield); Emma Wood (Penfolds); Elena Brooks (Dandelion Vineyards); Sarah Crowe (Yarra Yering); Kerri Thomson (KT Wines); Alexia Roberts (Pennys Hills); Vanya Cullen (Cullens); Lousia Rose and Nat Cleghorn (Yalumba); Stephanie Trott (Mt Horrocks); Gwyn Olsen (Briar Ridge & Pepper Tree Wines ); Rebekah Richardson (Irvine Wines) To Food: Its TARTS & Terrine Terroir! Your Hosts: Johann Cloete & Joanna Faber The Committee invites each member and each guest to each bring your favourite wine either made by a woman winemaker or named after women to share with other members and guests.

The theme is: "Which wine did you discover during the COVID lockdown?" I discovered the Holm Oak Protege Pinot Noir 2019. I regularly order a mixed case of wine from Holm Oak to taste their latest releases. As I really enjoyed the Wizard and Estate Pinots from 2018, I decided I would buy some more to drink and to cellar. I mistakenly received some bottles of the Protege 2019 which is the lesser label of Holm Oak costing about $18 for members. As always the service from Bec at Holm Oak was exceptional. She promised to complete by original order and I could keep the Protege to enjoy. I did not expect much but it surprised me. It is a lighter style (13% alcohol) made with no oak displaying strawberry and spices, certainly made to enjoy now - an excellent wine. Halliday recently awarded it 95 points.

05.01.2022 Wines from Barossa via zoom. Date: Friday 7 August 2020 Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm... Venue: Your home https://nteu.zoom.us/j/91401658054 No costs. Join Barossa born - (Murray Street) John Nenke and Shirley McCormick, as he invites you to share his tall tales and fine experiences in the Barossa Region with wines and people. Hell clue you in on whos who, and whats what in established wineries and areas, and the delight hes discovered in the younger upcoming generational changes - from Valley floor to the heights in Eden. Gather your friends, share a plate and bottle, then Zoom in to enjoy your evening. The Barossa, widely regarded as Australia`s most famous wine area, consists of two main regions - the Barossa Valley and the higher Eden Valley. Each of these has been split into sub-regions e.g. High Eden Lyndoch, Western Ridge and Kalimna. Over 40 grape varieties are now planted in the Barossa of which Shiraz is by far the largest planting across all the sub-regions - nearly 50% overall. The other most noted varieties are Grenache, Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Semillon, not forgetting Alicante Bouchet, Tempranillo and many other Spanish and Italian varieties are being trialled or in production. Montepulciano may be one to watch out for. As of 2018 there were 11645 hectares of vines planted in the Barossa Valley and 2335 in the Eden Valley. In 2020, a very poor yielding year, 32693 tonnes of grapes were crushed in the Barossa after a high of 85149 tonnes in 2017. Reportedly there are 170 wineries in the Barossa of which 106 are detailed on the Barossa Website. Halliday 2020 has given 5 stars to 75 Barossa wineries with 45 of them being awarded 5 red stars and Barossa wineries taking out 6 of the best of the best categories including one 100 point wine. "Colonel William Light was going to call this area Barrosa after a battleground in Spain where the English defeated the French in1811, but a clerical error was made in the Titles Office and ever since this now great wine area has only the one R in Barossa." Join us virtually to share and discuss a selection of wine and matching food offerings as we come together in this era of physical distancing where we may be restricted by physical distance but not by the love of wine At 6 pm on Friday 7 August Set yourself up with your wine selections, food pairings, a pen, and paper.. log in using the Zoom link provided and share in our discovery of wines from Barossa. Wines of Victoria With Melbournians and their fellow Victorians under continued COVID restrictions and still recuperating from the summer fires, we shall salute them and celebrate all many delightful wines that Victoria offers. From the rich reds and fortifieds of Rutherglen in the north to the elegant chardonnays and pinots from the Mornington Peninsular, and to all the valleys and high country in between. How does a chardonnay from Mornington compare to one from the Yarra Valley? And have you tried a pinot from Geelong? What wineries are in the Gippsland area? Please bring along a bottle of Victorian wine to share. And there will be a mystery wine from the WGA cellar. Please join us on our 2020 return to Holy Trinity Hall.
