23.01.2022 North Bondi SLSC Boat and Crew 1968 Today’s Flashback Friday photograph taken in 1968, features North Bondi SLSC boat crew members R. Snell, G. Cunningham, C. Piggot and P. Cunningham. Intertwined with the early development of the surf lifesaving movement, surf boats like in our photograph have been utilised by Surf Life Saving Clubs since the beginning of the movement since the early to mid 1900s. Originally used a rescue craft in more dangerous, further reaching rescues whe...re belt and reel are too far to reach - these heavy wooden boats have since made way for inflatable rescue boats while the newer, lightweight surfboats are now used for competitions only. An enduring popular sport in Surf Life Saving culture, surfboat competition began in NSW in the early 1900’s, with boat crew members reputedly some of the toughest, but also the biggest larrikins of the clubhouses. The old joke about boat crew recruitment describes a row of club members lined up with house bricks thrown at them. The members who fail to duck are selected for the crew. Despite the jokes, boat crews are respected as elite sport competitors, and crew members must be volunteer Surf Life Savers to compete. As the surfboat story continues, these former rescue craft live on through the dedication of thousands of volunteers and intense inter-club and national competitions and, especially in a large swell, produce some of the most spectacular footage of all Surf Life Saving events.
