20.01.2022 Fun Fact Friday: Did you know that rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and rodents have aradicular hypsodont dentition and as such can be predisposed to dental issues throughout their lives?? What is Aradicular Hypsodont dentition you ask?... Well those are just fancy words for saying their teeth have no anatomical root and therefore some of their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives. All animals listed above have continuously growing incisors, while only some of them also have continuously growing cheek teeth (the large teeth at the back of the mouth). Since their teeth are always growing, they are always in need of a good diet and plenty things to chew on. Even though they are similar in how their teeth grow, each species of animal listed above have different dietary requirements to keep their teeth in tip top shape so be sure to formulate their diet specific to each individual. Dental Issues can include things such as sharp points on cheek teeth, malocclusions (undesirable alignment of upper and lower teeth when jaw is closed), tongue entrapment, and abscesses which can lead to severe and life threatening malnutrition. A few clinical signs to watch out for are: weight loss, drooling/wet chin, lumps on jaw, change in eating behaviour (preferring only softer foods), eating but dropping food out of mouth, not eating as much as they once would, and bulging/weepy eyes if abscess is on upper molar. Prevention is Key! Talk to your veterinarian today about an appropriate diet and environment for your furry friends! #funfactfriday #dentalhealth #pocketpets See more

16.01.2022 May you never forget the progress you’ve made, And may you never forget the mountains you’ve climbed. May you never forget that beautiful things do come together in their season and in their own time. ... I can’t believe that one year ago today, Murdoch’s Veterinary Class of 2017 officially became doctors and accomplished a major life milestone! We have survived our first year as New Grads and finally enter the ranks of Recent Graduates. Some of us stayed in Australia and some of us have travelled around the world, but all of us have shared the same ups and downs! No matter how much time goes between our conversations - we will forever be family and forever share a special bond!! Love and miss you all!! Also special shout-out to all my friends and family back in America and here in Australia that have supported me through this 10year journey to get where I am today! #oneyearago #recentgrad #nolongeranewgrad #babyvet #veterinarian #medicine #veterinarymedicine #veterinary #vetmed #doctor #vetlife #progress #goals #accomplishments #milestone #classof2017 #family #friends #dogtor #animaldoctor #surgeons #wedidit #studyabroad #travel #australia #study #graduation @ Perth, Western Australia See more

06.01.2022 PREPARE YOUR BRACHYCEPHALIC PET FOR SUMMER WITH A FREE HEALTH ASSESSMENT AT NARROGIN VETERINARY SERVICES, AVAILABLE UNTIL THE END OF THE MONTH! Summer can ...be an incredibly uncomfortable and potentially even dangerous time for our brachycephalic pets. For those who don’t know, the term Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) refers to a group of conditions resulting from the body conformation of dogs and cats with short noses. Common breeds of brachycephalic dogs include English and French bulldogs, Pugs, Shih-Tzus and Pekingese. Other breeds with longer noses, such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Boxers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, can also be affected, although less commonly. The breeds of cats that are most affected are Persian and Himalayan. Brachycephalic pets have to constantly compensate for their malformations by pulling harder when they breathe in, which creates strong negative pressures in their throat, neck and chest, which in turn eventually causes secondary respiratory and digestive diseases. This is one of the reasons why brachycephalic animals frequently regurgitate or vomit. Typically, a brachycephalic animal suffering from BOAS shows a combination of signs such as loud breathing and snoring, intolerance to exercise or heat, collapse (syncopes), gagging, regurgitation and vomiting. These are further exacerbated by the warmer temperatures of summer and allergies such as hay fever. BOAS impacts on all aspects of a brachycephalic animal’s life. Their sleep, for instance, is frequently poor, similar to sleep apnea in humans: dogs tend to choke when they fall into sleep, which wakes them up until they snooze again and so on. Many brachycephalic pets are consequently chronically sleep deprived. Importantly, what is frequently perceived as being normal for the breed is physiologically abnormal. Having difficulty and making a very strong noise breathing may be widespread among brachycephalic dogs, however, it does not make it normal or without negative consequences to their health! If your dog is brachycephalic we highly recommend seeking a veterinary opinion on whether they require treatment for BOAS. This could dramatically improve your pets quality of life and as we move in to the warmer months could help manage what can be a very severe risk to their health. To book your pets FREE pre summer brachycephalic assessment or for more information simply give us a call on 98815417.
