21.01.2022 EXERCISE AND IMMUNITY - extracts from an article by the Women's Health Education Network ( WHEN ) "Exercise is well recognised to have an effect on how well ...our immune system functions. Studies have shown that regular physical activity is associated with fewer cases of influenza, pneumonia and even decreased mortality. ... The immune system is very responsive to exercise with both short-term and longer-term effects seen. When you do moderate-to-vigorous activity... a number of positive, short-term changes in your immune system occur, including enhanced movement of important immunity-related cells in the body. Each bout of moderate physical activity will create these effects and, when repeated on a regular basis, will provide multiple health benefits including reduced incidence of illness and reduced inflammation. Of course, not everyone’s immune systems are the same. Your immune system is also affected by your age, diet, smoking, alcohol intake, stress, sleep, medical conditions and certain medications. Your immunity will gain the most benefits if you’re meeting the national exercise guidelines..., however even those who exercise moderately (say 3 times a week) will demonstrate improvements in their immune system." 17.01.2022 WHEN Q&A! Many genres of dance require external rotation of the hips or turnout. Each body has a different predetermined angle of external rotation. Although stretching may increase the range of turnout to some extent, unfortunately, if you have a lower range of external turnout you can be more likely to incur injury by trying to force the body into positions it doesn’t naturally want to go. This can often lead to lower back pain or other injuries as the body tries to c...ompensate. There are some things you can do to decrease your risk: Always dance on a safe surface such as a sprung floor specifically designed for dance. Keep a check on the number of hours you are training and be mindful of fatigue. E.g. no more than 60 minutes en pointe. Engage in a warm-up that includes a combination of cardiovascular work and static and dynamic stretching. If you do get injured, make sure you seek professional advice in applying appropriate rehabilitation and put preventative actions in place to avoid future injuries. Attend a reputable dance school that will encourage correct technique from an early age and be able to recognise and work within your body’s physical limitations. 15.01.2022 Check out Femtech Collective’s blog post on our amazing founder Peta Titter! Through a lens of respect and dignity, WHEN empowers women to make informed decisions about their health throughout all stages of life to better manage health conditions, as well as engage in preventative health initiatives in a positive way. My hope is that we can alter the way society and mainstream media view a woman’s body... We now have so much more knowledge and it is unacceptable in this day... and age for women to become socially isolated or live in pain due to incontinence, prolapse or joint deterioration. We believe that what we are doing has the ability to change the rhetoric around women’s health, bodies and ageing. - Peta #womenshealth #positiveaging #livingwell #healthyliving #education #womenshealtheducation #exercise #womeninsports #womenshealthmatters #femtech
14.01.2022 WHEN Q&A! Being active doesn’t require going to the gym or having your own treadmill. Exercise can be as simple as taking the stairs, sitting less and taking regular breaks from your desk, or parking further from your destination and walking. Other simple body weight exercises you can do include squats, calf raises, and single leg lunges. For the upper body, you can use two equal sized cans of food as your weights or try doing push-ups leaning against a wall. ... Don’t forget that the fun stuff like dancing and playing with your pets or at your children’s pace can also be really great for your mental and physical health! Finally, if you’re new to exercise, start with small, achievable goals. Begin with 10 minutes a day, then gradually build up. If you’re not feeling well or are unsure of whether a certain type of movement or exercise is right for you, touch base with a health professional and stay safe. 08.01.2022 WHEN Q&A! It is recommended that you should not run with your baby in a stroller until they are at least 6-9 months old.
