16.01.2022 SLOW DOWN AND WATCH OUT FOR KOALAS Spring has sprung and koalas are actively moving around trying to find territory with enough food and opportunities to breed ...in the ever reducing and fragmented koala habitat areas. Unfortunately, during this time each year the Friends of the Koala (FOK) receives an ever-increasing number of calls about injured or dead animals. in the past 10 days alone 7 koalas have been hit by cars around Lismore. Please slow down and watch out for koalas. If you see a koala that is sick or injured, phone Friends of the Koala’s 24-hour rescue hotline on 6622 1233.

16.01.2022 Oh no! More Prohibited Matter on the North Coast... After receiving a report from a concerned landholder, Weed Officers found an infestation of Amazon Frogbit (...Limnobium laevigatum) in Boomerang Creek near Dorroughby. They quickly enacted a rapid response including surveillance along the affected and adjoining waterways, installing a series of booms (to prevent further spread) and controlling the weed. Scattered infestations were found along 36km of waterways between Dorroughby and Woodlawn. As Weed Officers work to eradicate this plant, they are asking all landholders in the area to check their backyard ponds and dams for Amazon Frogbit. If you think you have seen this weed, please call your local Weed Officer as soon as possible. They will help you to identify and eradicate Amazon Frogbit to protect our natural waterways. For more information about Amazon Frogbit go to NSW WeedWise: https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Frogbit See more

14.01.2022 After meeting with a Rous (Water Council) spokesperson recently i really felt disappointed, in that my questions were left unanswered, answered in very vague te...rms, or overly technical gibberish. For example, Why such a monstrosity of a Dam? Our local population growth figure is only said to be going to 12,000 or 12% over 40 years (95K+12K=107K). He was reluctant to talk in population figures ("too rubbery") but comfortable with talk of an increase in "connections" to the tune of 55,000. I gathered that is mostly households, retail, a little industry, and very little agriculture. Reading between the lines that indicated a growth figure of 257%! This should loosely mirror the population policy planning for the state and means our region is meant to grow to nearly 400,000 by the end of this century. Wow! So i did a bit of research and it turns out that Rous is right on track. And actually in line with the State and Federal policy to expand the state population from 6.75 to 18 million by 2060 (275%). "Young skilled immigrants to form the tax base for the baby boomers' retirement" is the cry. This translates to a population in our region of 400,000 by 2115 (95 years off), and explains the apparent overcapacity of the proposed Dunoon Dam to match that. Perfectly. All in the gov.au "NSW Blueprint 2040" documents. Check it out. Driven by the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund and backed by fast-tracked massive loans (aka Debt Enslavement for our great grandkids). Check it out. Good news is we can fight the destruction of Aboriginal Heritage, Biodiversity, and our social fabric through their own policies which speak of respecting these values, at least from one side of the mouth! But... we need all Aussies to hold them to their words. These lazy exploitations of nature cannot continue. Nature, and therefore our lives too, depend on it. Please share. This is an issue for all Aussies... and remember submissions close 9th September. https://bit.ly/no-dam-printable-resources https://bit.ly/no-dam-submission-guide

11.01.2022 Investing in new tools to tackle the threat of feral cats on our native wildlife Last week, the Australian Government announced it had committed $2 million t...o upscale the production of two feral cat control tools, the Curiosity bait for feral cats and Felixer Grooming Traps. The Curiosity bait for feral cats is a small sausage with a hard plastic pellet containing a humane toxin (para-aminopropiophenone, or PAPP). The bait has been designed to minimise the risk to native animals. A hard pellet limits access by animals other than cats. The Felixer Grooming trap is an innovative and automated tool to help control feral cats and foxes. This tool uses sensors to distinguish target cats and foxes from non-target wildlife and humans and sprays the targets with a measured dose of toxic gel. Across Australia the toll of feral cats on our remarkable wildlife is significant. According to Australia's leading scientists each day, more than 3.1 million mammals, 1 million birds and 1.7 million reptiles are killed by cats across Australia. More information about these tools and feral cats can be found at http://environment.gov.au//feral-animals-austra/feral-cats : Felixer cat traps being trialed at Pullen Pullen reserve. Such a great morning and a statement of determined optimism that these trees will be shadowing a living thriving creek in 10, 30, 100 years to come.
