25.01.2022 3 Queens in one hive in Tasmania yesterday.

24.01.2022 The other half of a 40ft container load that arrived in Melbourne 2 weeks ago, another container arriving 6th June, all to be cut up for current orders and then another in July. Good to be busy.

23.01.2022 One load on its way.

23.01.2022 Couple more orders going out today. Bit more room in the shed temporarily, lots of orders still coming in on top of orders already taken. Gonna have to get a bigger whip. Its cold and breezy up here as well.

22.01.2022 Our honey bee producers have had a pretty tough time in recent years. A prolonged drought followed by devastating bushfires and now COVID-19. Bees play a vital ...role in our food security and there are some critical, yet simple, things we can do to help secure the future of our honey bee industry. https://www.agrifutures.com.au//where-would-we-be-without/

21.01.2022 Bob the Whirrakee Woodware mascot hard at it.

21.01.2022 Whirrakee Woodware is open for business at the moment and will be watching events closely. It is preferred if you phone or email us with what you require, we send you an invoice, pay electronically and then you can pick up at front door. If you are sick, dont bother, had someone in yesterday coughing and spluttering, not impressed, you will be asked to leave. Everyone, stay safe. Peter & Ali.

20.01.2022 The late Mr. Bob McDonald OAM

19.01.2022 I had an experience today with an orchardist in the Shepparton area who is wanting bees for his orchard. He has previously had a recreational beekeeper put his ...hives on the property for free for between 8 and 10 weeks. The orchardist initially has cherries, apricots and plums, followed by pears and finally apples. This year the recreational beekeeper could not place his two hives there due to covid. The orchardist said that he was told that two hives on his 50 acre orchard is plenty and any beekeeper will do it for free as we are all looking for places to put our hives. Also the honey we make from his orchard more than covers any costs to the beekeeper. So... was he shocked when I gave him a quote and told him all the above information was rubbish. If you are a recreational beekeeper and want to pollinate... think about it. You will not get honey from the above fruit....you will subject your bees to chemicals ( especially in the Shepparton area)... Your hives will often take a beating and take weeks or even months to bring back to reasonable strength..... your costs will far outweigh any profit.... You will make no money out of the job....and finally you will create the wrong mindset for the orchardist who then needs to source hives from elsewhere. Dabbling in pollination requires knowledgable beekeepers who can provide effective pollination services, provide accurate information to the grower, and be paid for their trouble..... Think about it. 19.01.2022 La vida se Inicia.

19.01.2022 Hard to believe that all this bees wax was produced from these little wax glands. Amazing little critters.

17.01.2022 It breaks my heart to see brand new beekeepers with newly bought hives being supplied with diseased colonies. We have many new beekeepers thinking they can sell... starter hives or passing swarms on without checking the new keeper has done a good course which includes pest and disease topics, and without ensuring a starter hive is free of disease. It is awful for the new beekeeper, time consuming and expensive for someone like myself to put disease control measures in place to ensure my apiary and others I visit are protected from the spread of disease. Please encourage new beekeepers to do a course on pests and diseases, and ensure they check the colony prior to purchase and ensure the supplier is of good repute. These things should happen regardless of any certification supplied.. See more

16.01.2022 New addition to the Whirrakee Collection. Warre inspection boxes.

16.01.2022 Wanted: someone who loves bees as much as we do. This is a unique opportunity to join a pretty special business: a large-scale, Victorian-grown beekeeping and h...oney-making operation thats been in the same family for five generations. Punching far above its weight for its size, Warral Maldon cares for thousands of hives, producing over 200 tonnes of single-source honey each year for multinational food manufacturers with globally-recognised quality standards. In fact, youve probably already had Warral Maldon honey in your ham, energy bar or ready-made meal - and we have our sights set on a rapid and exciting expansion. With great-great-grandson of the founder and current Managing Director Lindsay Callaway at the helm, were not looking to fill a particular role as much as were trying to find a particular person. Whether youre at the assistant or manager level or anything in between, if youre ready to take on the apiary industry within our ranks, we want to hear from you. Who were looking for: - A hard-working problem solver with a collaborative, down-to-earth character. You might not have beekeeping experience, but youre keen to learn all about it. Someone comfortable working with flexible hours, often away from home up to 4 nights at a time. - An outdoorsy type, willing to work in the open throughout the warmer months - we promise an ice cream on the way home has never tasted so good! - Someone fit enough and willing to lift heavy boxes of honey (30-35kg). - A bee-lover who recognises that sometimes they dont love us: you will get stung. - Experience dealing with the stress and practical problems that come with working in remote areas, like bad weather and getting bogged or broken down. - Someone who works well with a small, tight-knit team who rely on each other - we always win and it feels good when we do. Key responsibilities: - Beekeeping, of course! Assist in brood management, moving hive materials, shifting bees, removing honey, and always keeping an eye out for improvements in the way we do things. Ensuring our brood remains disease-free is our top priority. - Helping extract our excellent honey, including operating specialised equipment in our plant - you will get sticky! - Adhering to strict food quality and safety standards, as per requirements from our globally-recognised BRCGS and BQual certifications - Construction of new hive material and maintenance of old to be performed with quality workmanship. Your focus will be on safety, quality then quantity - in that order. - Beeswax processing: help melt, process and package our beeswax in a time-efficient and safe manner. Cleanliness of area, floor and equipment is a must. -Maintain a written beekeeping diary and apiary record relating to all work performed. - Safely driving trucks, cars, forklifts and frontend loaders in various weather and road conditions, keeping on top of vehicle maintenance records. - Ongoing preventative maintenance of plant equipment. - Represent Warral Maldon and further what we do at beekeeping conferences and trade shows. - General team and administration duties, including a daily catch up with Lindsay, weekly staff meetings, answering phones and enquiries, helping dispatch orders, and maintaining written records and plans. You might have: - Experience in carpentry, woodworking, construction or similar. - Spent a lot of time outdoors - you love camping, nature or maybe youve worked as a park ranger, gardener, landscaper. - Experience working with vehicles and equipment, possibly as a mechanic, toolmaker, sheet metal worker or boilermaker. - Completed an apprenticeship in an adjacent industry as a tiler, electrician, chef, or similar. Qualifications - ideal. - Current drivers license. - Current heavy rigid truck license - Current forklift license - Current front end loader license. Qualifications - nice-to-have, but we can help you attain these if you dont have them. - Food Handling Certificate - Current First Aid certificate level 2 (CPR) - Agricultural Chemical Users permit - Biosecurity for Beekeepers (BOLT) permit If this sounds like you, please introduce yourself alongside your CV in an email to [email protected] by 30 September. Successful candidates will be invited to a socially-distanced interview at our HQ in Maldon, Victoria in the first two weeks of October. The role is permanent part-time, four to five days a week. As were looking for a personality not a specific role, remuneration is to be negotiated based on experience and qualifications.

15.01.2022 Contamination of our pure Australian bees wax is of great concern to our industry. Cheap skates dont seem to think it matters. It will in the long run and everything has to be tested and price goes even higher.

15.01.2022 Bee-hive for your bee-hind?! Chris Thiele on King Island got quite the shock recently when he lifted the lid to his outdoor long-drop toilet! "Lifted the li...d and was chased by bees very unhappy! I did get a stick and push the lid back down," he said. What a sweet and un-bee-lievable story! : Chris Thiele

13.01.2022 Beehind the scenes. Did you know the Governor-General is a keen apiarist? He relocated his bees from Government House Sydney and they are now thriving in the ...Canberra conditions (despite the smoke, hail and heat theyve endured so far in 2020!). The Governor-General is also pleased to serve as Patron of Wheen Bee Foundation, a not for profit that promotes awareness of the importance of bees.

10.01.2022 This Algerian firefighter risked his life twice, one by fire and the second by bee stings. He deserves a medal!

02.01.2022 Careful of cheap wooden boxes. Posted by Doug Purdie- in Backyard Beekeeping Australia This is why cheap foreign boxes made of bits of wood glued together are... not worth the money. This supposedly wax dipped super has lasted about two seasons before delamination. You can see the sides are made of a number of bits of wood glued together they are just not resistant to hot and wet weather conditions. As you can see from the photos this is not a one off these boxes always fail early. 02.01.2022 Let's concentrate on buying Australian made, even if it's more expensive and I believe if we stick to our vow, we'll make a huge difference.
