20.01.2022 Save Whistlewood, Tucks Road and the Green Wedge Zone from Telstra Tower! With almost no warning Whistlewood and neighbouring properties in Tucks Road Shoreham are highly likely to have a 31.3 metre-high Telstra tower virtually on our doorsteps. The 31m high tower would be on private land leased to Telstra via its contractor Visionstream and would sit amongst a cluster of 5-6 rural residential properties. It’s due to be sited approx. 30 metres from the house of its adjoining ...neighbour, 40 metres from Whistlewood's boundary and garden areas and approximately 80 metres from the house. As the tower would sit on a prominent ridge line on Tucks Road it would compromise the tranquility of this rural and historic road. Originally the main walking track for the Bunurong/Boonwurrung people and later the coach road from Flinders to Red Hill, Tucks Rd includes several heritage listed properties and high quality farm produce outlets and wineries. The tower would also be in view of surrounding areas and properties to the south, east, north-east and west. There has been no proper community consultation, other than a notification letter we and other residents within 1km received in late May 2019 - seven months after the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council had received the planning application. The letter wrongly identified the location of the facility and on enquiry we were told the decision was imminent. Other negatives include noise through air conditioning, the tower itself and the likelihood that it would soon be repurposed to support the 5G network, about which little is known and which is attracting worldwide concern regarding impacts on health, wildlife and other issues. Its position is in the Green Wedge Zone and covered by Significant Land and various other environmental overlays. Approving this would set a precedent for allowing such structures to be built on similar landscapes throughout the Peninsula. Please help us to protect Whistlewood, Tucks Road and the Green Wedge by signing our online petition: https://www.change.org/p/save-whistlewood-tucks-road-and-th
17.01.2022 Thanks to The Age Traveller for featuring us in their list of Twenty Reasons to Visit the Mornington Peninsula: http://www.traveller.com.au/mornington-peninsula-travel-tip 12. CHECK OUT THE OUTBACK ART... Hidden down a dirt lane, you will find one of the peninsula's great galleries. Specialising in contemporary indigenous Australian art, the mother-and-daughter team of Susan McCulloch and Emily McCulloch Childs are curators and authors of the authoritative McCulloch's Contemporary Aboriginal Art guide, and their family home and artist hub, Whistlewood, holds regular exhibitions and afternoon art soirees. Eclectic exhibitions feature paintings from the APY lands, weaving from the Tjanpi Desert and ceramics, perhaps by a local potter. Barks, baskets, landscapes in oils no medium is ignored. 14.01.2022 Dear friends and supporters, Thank you all so much for signing and/or making comments on our petition to stop a large Telstra mobile phone tower being built on a significant ridgeline in the Green Wedge Zone and opposite Whistlewood. The petition gathered over 900 signatures: every signature and comment helped and to have such support was wonderful. It’s been a lengthy and challenging process that’s required a concerted effort, led by our small group of Tucks Road neighbours..., but we were delighted and relieved to receive news yesterday evening that the Mornington Peninsula Shire planners have refused this development application. The applicant (Visionstream on behalf of Telstra) has 60 days in which to appeal this decision in VCAT so we aren’t entirely in the clear. However, the process involved the holding of a planning application meeting organised by Shire Planners between us and other most-affected objectors, Visionstream and several senior Telstra personnel, so all that could have been negotiated has been. We will let you know any more news and thank you deeply for your great support and active expression of care for the beautiful Peninsula environment and the history and significance of Whistlewood. With all best wishes, Susan and Emily
