05.01.2022 To change, or not to change, that is the question. Taking your husband’s name was always the tradition, but we live in a modern age and this can sometimes seem old fashioned. REASONS TO KEEP - My accomplishments are all under my maiden name, and changing my name might hurt me professionally. - I love my name and don’t want to change.... - I don’t want to deal with the paperwork. - Because it’s an archaic and outdated practice,and I don’t want to. - We’re a non-binary couple, and/or don’t believe in predetermined gender roles. REASONS TO CHANGE - I want to feel like one united couple, not two individuals. - I want our kids to have the same last name. - I don’t like my surname, or have some trauma around keeping it. - It’s traditional to do this, and I like the tradition. REASONS TO COMPROMISE - Compromising seems fair, is there a way to meet in the middle? Maybe you could do a Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and have BOTH of you add the other partner’s name as a hyphenation with your own. Everybody wins! - I read recently of a couple who combined their surnames into a new amalgamated surname.
