25.01.2022 This morning we’ve received messages and calls offering assistance with regards to the fire situation to the north-east of us. A big thanks to those who have got in touch, but we are ok. Like Caversham Wildlife Park who are all hands on-deck, ready to go, we have our team prepped and watching the situation. Please take a moment to consider the amazing work being done by our volunteer and career firefighters, in what is clearly trying conditions today, and those who have lost homes and properties. Our thoughts are with you!

24.01.2022 HABITAT HEROES Did you know that there are over 360 species of termites in Australia? These tiny workers get a bad rep, but only a small number actually cause damage to wood and crops. ... Termites are critical in natural ecosystems, an important thing to note on #WorldHabitatDay! Termites recycle dead and rotten timber and plants, producing hollows which are important homes for many log dwellers such as black cockatoos and brush-tail possums. They are also a protein rich food source for a range of animals, from echidnas to numbats. So next time you’re out in the bush and see one of their amazing mounds, appreciate the role of these hard working invertebrates have in the natural world, and the might of their engineering such as the example shown here! . . . . . #WhitemanPark #SwanValley #WesternAustralia #justanotherdayinwa #ConservationReserve #EnvironmentalEducation #WhitemanParkWildlife #wildlife #AustralianWildlife #InsectsofInstragram #insectagram #bugsofinstagram #termites #HabitatCreators #EcosytemEngineers

24.01.2022 SCIENCE STUFF Did you know that there is a lot of work behind the scenes to keep our captive fauna populations healthy? And were not just talking general health here either! Alongside specialist veterinarians, the Park actively manages the genetics of our critically endangered woylie population. A risk of captive bred populations is that they can become inbred; monitoring the level of genetic diversity in the population will ensure that they all remain as healthy as ...possible, and can go on to do what their species needs - breeding of more strong, healthy individuals! Monitoring of the species brings about a bit of paperwork as we maintain a database of all the animals that go into the Reserve. Our database includes each animals species, sex, weight and condition scores from every time they are caught, as well as any genetic testing information. Keeping accurate records is an important tool in the conservation of this cute little native! #nationalscienceweek

24.01.2022 KING OF THE CASTLE We’ve said it’s a ‘nature’ playspace, right? And boy, do we mean it! Pia’s Place isn’t just fun for the kids... our wildlife loves exploring it just as much! This black-headed monitor (Varanus tristis) enjoyed a climb ALL THE WAY to the top of the tower recently! Remember, if you see any wildlife in the playspace, just give them their space. Most of them won’t bother you if you don’t bother them! And if you’re keen to learn more about the wildlife of Whiteman Park and what critters mig be living in your suburb, then be sure to check out the Rewild workshops at EnviroFEST 2020 on Saturday! Link in bio to learn more.

20.01.2022 Dear John... Today, we say goodbye to another colleague and familiar face around the Park! John came to the Park in January 2001, meaning he just missed out on the 20-year pin! (Note to self: follow up with boss if there really is a 20 year pin?! ) ... Hes been the one in charge of keeping the recreation areas you all know and love green and healthy! Our tree man, our turf man, and the relocator of bees (or at least the man organising the relocation of our honey-making friends ), John and his team have always been hands-on in the picnic areas! One of the selection panel who originally interviewed John for his position as Horticulturist recalled that John arrived for the interview loaded up with maps, plans, specifications and photographs of his work, a complete contrast from the other candidates who mainly had CVs and references. Obviously, he has proved his worth! We will always know and love John for his passion for food (and by that, we mean ), golf and bushwalking ! John, today we say farewell. Enjoy your retirement! care of Johns family, who came to visit him for his very last shift as weekend supervisor a few weeks back!

Alongside the 'A Day in the Museum' storytelling sessions at 10.30am and 12noon, the team will be demonstrating this chaff cutter. It's a very fitting demonstration as tomorrow's storytelling theme is titled 'Strange Tales form the Farm'. Hands up if you've ever seen one of these before?

17.01.2022 FAREWELL Today we say farewell to a familiar face in the Park, our highly valued and respected curator of the Whiteman Collection, Val Humphrey. Having started at Whiteman Park back in January 1999, Val got to do what many curators don’t: to develop a new museum from scratch! And in doing so, Revolutions Transport Museum opened in 2005, with Val at the helm ever since. ... She is a true transport treasure with all the knowledge she holds on the subject. Val has been the steward of the Whiteman Collection since it was bequeathed to the Park and the people of Western Australia. Dubbed the ‘holder of all Park wisdom’, she will be sorely missed by all! Thank you for sharing all your hard earned knowledge with us and the people of Western Australia.

17.01.2022 RED CAPPED ROBINS We don’t have any red poppies to share with you today for #rememberanceday so instead we’re bringing you this gorgeous little red capped robin, which was snapped by @travel_wild_animals recently. Our beautiful spring weather brings a flourish of colour to the Park, not just in wildflowers, but also with the bird life! They aren’t seen in the Park often, so keep your eyes out for them.

17.01.2022 EXIT STAGE LEFT You’ll need some keen eyes to spot the critter who made a hasty exit behind the water tank in Woodland Reserve! While he might not have been this brown goshawk’s lunch plans, we can’t argue with giving those talons a beak a wide berth! Can you see the escapee? ... #whitemanparkwildlife

17.01.2022 TEEEEF Woylies may be cute... but underneath all their adorable fluffiness are some sharp claws and even sharper teeth. These incredible choppers can be used in self-defence (just ask anyone who has handled a wild woylie!) but are more commonly used when animals are foraging for dinner. Their very diverse menu may include roots, tubers, bulbs, fungi, nuts, seeds, tree resin and even insects, hence the need for some well-designed teeth! ... Woylies are an important part of many ecosystems, turning over the soil and helping soil nutrient cycles, dispersing fungal spores and improve water drainage in some soils. They are certainly amazing little creatures with a big role to ecological role to play, of which those teef are a very important part! You can see these little guys for yourself (although we cant guarantee youll get to see the teeth quite like this!) on one our Nocturnal Woylie Walks. They recommence on Friday, September 4! @houndstoothstudio https://whitemanpark.rezdy.com//nocturnal-woylie-walk-wood

17.01.2022 We've seen some wild weather over the last few weeks, bringing plenty of rain to the Park and making these little guys very happy! 15.01.2022 PROTECTING OUR THREATENED SPECIES Woodland Reserve's predator proof fence is a serious bit of tech. The fence is specifically designed to keep our small mammals biggest threats out of the Reserve - cats and foxes. ... Yes, our cute family moggies can be a major factor in the demise of many of Australia's small mammals, reptiles and birds due to their insatiable desire to hunt. While reserves like ours are popping up around the country, you can do your bit to help our wildlife for National Threatened Species Day by simply keeping your cat contained on your property - and indoors is even better! 15.01.2022 DOGGY IN THE WINDOW Who’s a good boy? IG/dusty.thebordercollie is of course! 13.01.2022 #AskACuratorDay WHERE DID OUR COLLECTION COME FROM? Our collection originated with the Parks namesake Mr Lew Whiteman. Lew was an avid collector, filling two houses in Guildford with curios, and displaying his larger pieces here at Mussel Pool. When Mr Whiteman passed in 1994, he left his entire collection to the people of Western Australia in his Will. Everything related to transport and development was given to Whiteman Park and is known as the Whiteman Collection. It is this collection that became Revolutions Transport Museum. . #revolutionstransportmuseum #whitemanpark

12.01.2022 Whiteman Park has a strong transport heritage theme, a legacy of the man after whom we are named Lew Whiteman. The Park showcases this through three incredible museums, to experience, educate and enjoy the transport history of our state. The Tractor Museum of WA - Inc hosts dozens of relics including engines, trucks and tractors galore as well as a display of country life artefacts and old photographs. The Motor Museum of Western Australia covers two buildings and has... over 200 vehicles on display from the horse-drawn era to the present day. Spend a few hours here marvelling over the incredible collection, including Daniel Ricciardo's 2014 Red Bull racing car in which he won his first-ever F1 Grand Prix in. Revolutions Transport Museum is the state's only land transport museum and is an engaging exhibit that showcases the amazing impact our transport choices have made in the past and are still making on WA's life and landscape. Bright Press Whiteman Park aims to spread the love of letterpress printing and to keep the craft alive! 12.01.2022 Needing a wind down after the weekend? We have two street libraries here at the Park with multiple books available at each of them. Pick one to your liking, perch yourself on a bench or under a shady tree, and get lost in the book to the sounds of nature surrounding you.

12.01.2022 The Australian magpie is as iconic a species as they come, striking as much fear into the hearts of Aussies and tourists alike as dropbears, crocodiles and all those insanely venomous biting critters we have (were looking at you ). But the magpie is one of our most fascinating birds species! Apart from their beautiful song, these birds have amazing memories and can remember individual human faces, as well as general humanoid traits. You wont see any of our resident ...Park magpies swooping one of the staff here. We talk to them, and generally let them go about their very important business of nest building and protecting their young. Unfortunately, as with some areas where cyclists, dogs or redheads (yes, it happens!) may trigger a magpie to swoop, here at the Park its the smallest of us who tend to be targeted. Children running and chasing after birds may seem like harmless fun, but magpies are different to the rest. They remember the attack and will do everything in their sharp-beaked, whip-fast power to protect THEIR young from such aggressors. (We can only imagine what the redheads did to that one family of magpies!!) So get to know your local maggies; talk to them nicely, maybe offer them that odd garden insect you find and youll have them rewarding you with songs of the Aussie bush! And at the Park, give them the healthy respect they deserve by allowing them their space and admiring them from a distance. Future lookalikes will thank you!

08.01.2022 Eye spy with my little frog eye, something beginning with ‘g’....! You think it should be starting with ‘f’, right? 04.01.2022 #AskACuratorDay Hi, Im Val, the curator of the Whiteman Collection at Revolutions Transport Museum. I became a curator because I love to be able to tell stories about objects that make people want to dig deeper into things! What would you like to know about our collection? . #revolutionstransportmuseum #whitemanpark

04.01.2022 #AskACuratorDay WHATS YOUR SMALLEST OBJECT? While not technically the smallest objects, the miniature saddles were clearly crafted by someone with excellent eyesight! Complete with tiny stirrups, reins, whips, and bridles, Lew Whiteman owned these saddles in addition to his extensive full-sized saddle collection. Many of these saddles are on display in the museum for visitors enjoy too! - Jess . #revolutionstransportmuseum #whitemanpark

04.01.2022 #AskACuratorDay Hi, Im Jess, I wanted to become a curator because it looks so glamorous in films! Turns out it is a very messy job and I spend a lot of time covered in dust. Honestly though, I have always wanted a job that involved storytelling and that made people smile - working in a museum delivers this perfect combination. Museums are full of wonderful stories that bring joy, entertain the senses, and provide new insights into our histories. I feel very lucky to work in such a creative and educational environment. . #revolutionstransportmuseum #whitemanpark

04.01.2022 Revolutions Transport Museum is back open!

Over the years, we have been undertaking research to gain more knowledge about some of the items in the Whiteman Collection to be able to tell more detailed stories.
