09.01.2022 Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and in my role of Vice President at the Australian Men's Health Forum, I'd like to shine a light on resources we create to... raise awareness around some of the unknown risk factors that contribute to the astronomical, global male suicide statistics. Please take time to consider and share this information - in an attempt to recognise that male suicide is so much more than a mental health challenge. #menshealth #malesuicide #mentoo #wspd2020 See more

05.01.2022 Poor mental health remains a significant public health concern among males, with up to a quarter of males experiencing diagnosable poor mental health in their lifetime, the most common of which is depression. 'Ten to Men: The Australian Longitudinal Study on Male Health' is a major national research project whose findings will improve programs and policies for all Australian males. The highest proportion of those experiencing moderate or severe symptoms of depression was amon...g males aged 18-24 years. Over 40% of young men in this age bracket experienced at least mild symptoms of depression. Alarmingly, only a quarter of men said they would be likely or very likely to seek help from a mental health professional if they experienced an emotional or personal problem, according to the report into the mental health of Australian males. Loneliness among men was identified as something that needed to be de-stigmatised through public health campaigns, with 4% reporting not having a single, close friend. At the population level, this would indicate that, in 2015/16, over 200,000 Australian men felt they didn't have a single close friend. 04.01.2022 How important is it for men to have a good job? Perhaps good work can be defined as working for a worthy cause, or work that has you rubbing shoulders with someone more 'important', or work that has you saving lives, making breakthroughs, doing something you love AND getting paid for it. Perhaps the good job comes with some irresistible perks. Paid leave. Parking. A healthy and safe work environment. A boss that praises you and suggests you take an early afternoon ...... Which begs the question, what is a bad job? And whose business is it what business you're in anyway? Some take the view that men are too hinged to their work and may suffer or lose their sense of identity once they retire, or lose their job and face prolonged periods of unemployment. There are obvious benefits of being employed; from not only having a sense of purpose but improving one's self-esteem, one's physical & mental health too. So how do you know if your identity has become 'enmeshed' with your career? Psychologists use the term enmeshment to describe a situation where the boundaries between people become blurred, and individual identities lose importance. Enmeshment prevents the development of a stable, independent sense of self. An important read, leading up to International Men's Day 2020 on 19 November. https://hbr.org//what-happens-when-your-career-becomes-you #WhiteOwlMensHealth #WhiteOwlMensHealthAwareness #menshealth #covid19 #menshealthconnected #InThisTogether2020 #mentalhealthmatters Australian Men's Health Forum #TalkingAboutMen

01.01.2022 It goes without saying that 2020 has been a particularly challenging time for families. In times of crisis, we must focus on what we can control. Research suggests that up to 88% of Australian organisations are asking their employees to work from home due to COVID-19, and as we all know many schools across the country have been forced to close and shift to remote learning.... This means that hundreds of thousands of families are living, working and learning all in the same home that's unprecedented stress. Preventative mental health and emotional intelligence charity, The Man Cave, has worked with close to 20,000 teenage boys across the country helping them process their emotions and experiences, to improve their sense of self and their relationship skills, resulting in better communities for all. With insights from working with thousands of teenage boys, The Man Cave has created some crucial tips in helping them process the COVID-19 experience.
