17.01.2022 WHITFIELD Golf Cub is keen to play a key role in reconnecting the King Valley and district community after the isolation and restrictions courtesy of the virus and everybody is invited to the 2020 summer season launch on Wednesday, October 7 at 4.30pm. The daylight-saving Chook Run is the community and district golf club’s main competition and with adherence to all COVID19 protocols the club’s hope for the 2020-season is that it will double as a valuable and much needed distr...ict get-together with everybody welcome. The other regular club event for the summer is the Sunday 1.30pm program with both Wednesday and Sunday sessions catering for all standards in a mixed format. Great work over the winter by the ground crew of Dan Shanahan, Angus Brond, Graeme Stanyer and Merv Porter has the nine-hole layout in very good condition and players new and old can expect pleasant playing conditions. A superb effort by Graeme Stanyer in formulating a special mix of sand for the scrapes has greatly improved the holding nature of the surface and will make putts much harder to miss. Anybody requiring further information is invited to ring club president Greg Rosser on 0418 364828

07.01.2022 WHITFIELD golf club’s annual Stroke for Stroke day was conducted on Saturday and you could not have scripted the end result better! Despite the very interrupted preparation, the Newth family and golf club members paid a fitting tribute to the late Geoff Stroke Newth with a field of 30 taking to the boutique layout. Geoff Newth is one of the legends of the Whitfield Golf Club, a unique player and above all a driver of the friendly character and culture of the community clu...b! Among the field were proud past-winners of Stroke for Stroke honours including Damien Hartrey, Brendan Lancaster and Dan Shanahan, all were keen to become the first two-time winner. It was not to be with long-serving president, honorary greenkeeper and all-round Whitfield favourite, Graeme Stanyer adding his name to the Stroke for Stroke trophies. In a rerun of last year’s thrilling finish Stanyer reversed the tables on his old mate Dan Shanahan, the 2019 victor who shares the exact same credentials (as above) as the winner, but in 2020 it was Stanyer’s turn to lift the trophy aloft. In 2020 Stanyer had a nine-hole net-score of 25.5 and Shanahan carded 26.5, in 2019 it was Shanahan 25.5 and Stanyer 26.5. Best score in the female contingent was Robyn Hogan’s 30.5, Kathy Vincent recorded the longest drive and Glenis Skinner, a regular visitor from Mansfield, nearest the pin on the fourth. Longest drive among the males saw Cohen Vincent just shading Shane Boofa Douglas before Brendan Lancaster smashed one 240 metres up the hill on the fifth to win that award. Douglas got on the winners list when he claimed nearest the pin on the ninth by a whisker from Damien Hartrey. Trophies were presented by Stroke for Stroke sponsors, John and Sue from the Valley View Caravan Park, assisted by club captain Alastair Graham.
