We want to help our community to make informed decisions and undertake measures to minimise the effects of cyclones and other disasters that occur in our region. 22.01.2022 There is currently a Severe Weather Warning issued for damaging winds and heavy rainfall for the Whitsunday Region. A low pressure system is currently located well off the east coast of Cape York Peninsula, about 565 kilometres east of Cairns, and is forecast to continue moving southeastwards today. A strong ridge of high pressure lies along the southern and central Queensland coast. The combination of these features is expected to produce gusty winds in the warning area. Dam...aging winds, with peak gusts of around 100km/h, are possible about exposed parts of the Whitsunday Islands, the adjacent exposed coastal locations and elevated terrain in the warning area through much of today. Conditions are expected to begin to ease late today or this evening. 22.01.2022 Mayor Andrew Willcox provides a COVID-19 update to clarify the current situation in the Whitsundays and confirms that there have been no positive cases recorded... in over 3 months within our region and not one case of community transmission since the pandemic was declared. Mayor Willcox thanks the Whitsunday community that have been following the strong leadership of the Queensland Government and Queensland Health in keeping our region safe. 19.01.2022 BREAKING: Queensland borders will close to New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory from 1am this Saturday, August 8. All visitors will be denied en...try except for rare exemptions and returning Queenslanders will have to pay for 14 days mandatory hotel quarantine. Queensland’s Chief Health Officer has declared all of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory as hotspots. Only residents of border communities and essential workers, such as truck drivers, will be able to cross the border. Exemptions including for compassionate reasons will be limited. Passes for border communities will be for those with proof of address and photo ID. The border closure will be reviewed at the end of the month. #covid19au

16.01.2022 Fire Ban - Whitsunday Regional Council Local Government Area A fire ban prohibiting lighting fires in the open applies for the period 0001hrs on Monday 23rd November 2020 to 2359hrs on Monday 30th November 2020 . The fire ban is within the whole of the Local Government Area of Whitsunday Regional Council. All current Permits to Light Fire issued for the local fire ban area are hereby cancelled, subject to the following exemptions. THE FOLLOWING EXEMPTIONS APPLY:... * Fires lit for the purpose of cooking, that are: a. within a properly constructed receptacle such as a barbeque, gas or wood fired and pizza oven, and b. where the fire cannot escape or cause embers to drift, and c. there must be a fire extinguishing device available (e.g. garden hose or fire extinguisher) are permitted provided they are not left unattended. * Fires lit for the purpose of providing warmth that are: a. lit within a properly constructed receptacle, such as fire pits and braziers, and b. that are used in suburban back yard, and c. no larger than 1m x 1m x 0.5m, and d. there is a fire extinguishing device available (e.g. garden hose or fire extinguisher),and e. the area is cleared of vegetation and embers cannot drift from the fire, and f. provided they are not left unattended are permitted between 1800 hrs to 0600 hrs. 10.01.2022 Do you follow Queensland Health on Facebook? They provide some great advice on how to minimise your risk from catching Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Queensland Health advises that Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather. Regardless of climate, protect yourself and others from the virus by: Washing hands regularly Covering coughs and sneezes Throwing away used tissues Staying at least 1.5 metres away from anyone who is sick Staying at home if you're sick.

09.01.2022 The Premier and the Minister for Fire and Emergency Services have approved the declaration of a Disaster Situation under section 69 of the Disaster Management Act 2003 for the whole of the State of Queensland. The disaster declaration enables state and local agencies, such as council, to better support the community during the unfolding COVID-19 crisis. 08.01.2022 Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crews have contained a fire burning at Mount Whitsunday Drive and Hermitage Drive, Airlie Beach. Firefighters are patrolling the area and strengthening containment lines with the assistance of water bombing aircraft. Smoke is expected to impact the surrounding area for several days. Residents are asked to close windows and doors and if suffering from a respiratory condition, keep medications close by. Motorists should drive with caution. If you are concerned your property is under threat, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Their team ...will be able to organise the safe delivery of essential food and medication to those who cannot leave their home. The Community Recovery Hotline can be reached by dialing 1800 173 349.

04.01.2022 Well done to our communities for continuing to follow the COVID-19 measures keeping everyone safe. Our cases are low but we still need to remain vigilant and so... a testing blitz in the Whitsunday region is being rolled out this weekend. Anyone in the region is being urged to come forward and get tested for COVID-19 if they show any symptoms no matter how mild. The most common symptoms are: fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or fatigue. Please pre-book your appointment via the contact details in the link below.
