19.01.2022 Whitsunday Montessori is now able to work online, using Zoom. This may be of interest to anyone self-isolating at home due to the Corona Virus, or anyone unable to make it to the centre for other reasons.

19.01.2022 As a tuition centre I need to concentrate upon individual student needs in a more focused manner. However, yesterday a child's interests in how the world began reminded me of the first Great Lesson in the Montessori elementary curriculum. The Montessori Great Lessons are used to stimulate the interests of the students and start them on a path to learning. They are usually introduced at the beginning of the year, and are revisited each year. The first Great Lesson is known by ...a few names (e.g. The Coming of the Universe; or God with no Hands). It is worth looking up on Google - find a version that you like. You can change the wording to suit your audience. The story is told while showing several experiments/demonstrations and there are several pictures/charts to use as you tell the story. Make sure you practice before you tell the story to the child, as then you can ensure the best impact! Here's a photo of the story being told, along with the experiments etc. See more

19.01.2022 The kids aren't at school due to the Coronavirus. You've just started home-schooling. What do you do? Firstly, don't panic! My advice is to start slowly on your home-schooling program. Everyone is under a bit of stress and shock, so be kind to yourselves. When you have settled down, then focus upon Mathematics and English. Once you get into a routine with these 2 areas, you can think more widely about other subject areas. ... Remember, you want your child to stay on-track with school-work so that when school is back to normal he or she is still able to work at the year level expectation. For those in Australia, I would have a look at the ACARA website as this is where teachers find the year level expectations in each subject area. Familiarise yourself with English and Maths for your child's year level. Then focus upon an area or two at a time. Design your lessons around this. Don't get overwhelmed, just focus upon the areas that you think will best help your child move forward. Here are some photos of some Montessori Maths and English ideas. Now you can get started! You can do it!

18.01.2022 At Whitsunday Montessori we focus upon each child's individual needs. We observe the child's interests, talents and areas of need, and design the child's program based upon these.

13.01.2022 This has been a favourite of a few children lately. Do you know what it is? ... The Addition Strip Board!

09.01.2022 Timelines are used in Montessori classrooms to give children an understanding of history and change over time. Often they are quite long and extend across the room when unrolled. This gives the children an understanding of the length of time that has passed for the events depicted. What do you think this timeline shows? Preschool children (e.g. cycle 1 or 3-6 year olds) focus upon their own life and create timelines often depicting each birthday with photos of the child's growth over time. This is also a time when you would sing the Montessori birthday song.

09.01.2022 With social distancing becoming the norm in recent days, working online might be worth trying. Although the Montessori method of teaching involves the use of lots of hands-on materials, there are many things that we can do to teach on-line whilst our communities come to grips with the current health scare. Whitsunday Montessori can work online. Here are 3 areas that I can see that would be of use to a prep (or cycle 1) child that could be fairly easily organised at home: Sand...paper Letters (i.e. make own, one letter at a time); Miniature Environment (i.e. using LEGO); and Cards and Counters (i.e. using objects found at home and numerals 1-10 on cards). As a teacher, I would introduce concepts and use activities such as these online, and then the child could explore this further at home with an adult. Problem solved! How excited will your child be to connect with a teacher on a computer! What fun to be had making materials and using toys and objects at home to learn! 08.01.2022 We have now started a few Zoom lessons for children unable to attend lessons at the centre or school due to the Coronavirus. This is a good way for your child to stay in touch with a qualified teacher, when stuck at home, and it's fun too. What a great way to learn! A weekly lesson might just help your child remain on-track with their school work, and be ready to slot back into school again when the time comes. Whitsunday Montessori can support you during difficult times. We are here to help. Contact us through our website (www.whitsundaymontessori.com.au) or via email ([email protected]) for more information.

06.01.2022 We've had a very positive start back to centre-based classes this week. Everyone has been washing their hands upon arrival, social distancing and generally following excellent hygienic practices - well done! I'm already getting wrinkly hands from cleaning, but all for a good cause. We still run online classes, for those that prefer this option - as seems to be the preference of some of the older students, that enjoy working on computers. As the media tells us, we will probabl...y all be working a bit differently from now on. We are still occasionally working from home, but our office hours should be right back to normal very soon. Keep up all the good work everyone, we're getting there! Photo: A Science area in a Montessori Cycle 2 (i.e. 6-9 year olds or years 1 to 3) classroom. What do you think the children were studying in this classroom?

05.01.2022 Did you know that many Montessori schools incorporate Easter activities into their classroom? Here's a few simple activities that could be changed to have an Easter Theme. There are many more possibilities. 1. Miniature Environment - Make an Easter setting out of LEGO. Then Label the nouns (i.e. the objects). Older children could add adjectives (e.g. small rabbit), verbs (e.g. rabbit hopping) etc. 2. 3-Part Cards - You could do 'Parts of a Rabbit', 'Parts of a chick' or thing...s associated with Easter (e.g. hot cross buns, eggs, chocolate, Jesus etc). 3. Cooking - Look at the kitchen tools you will need, and make Easter eggs, hot cross buns etc. Also good for maths (e.g. counting how many cups of flour). 4. Play dough - Use Easter cutters. 5. Pom-Pom Maker - Make the bunny's tail etc. I'm sure you could think of many more ... See more
