20.01.2022 My client needs a Dust Management Plan. We searched online and found completed plans for existing projects but very few companies who prepare these reports. While some people understand that a Dust Management Plan this falls under Occupational Health many potential clients wouldn’t think to search under this category. We phoned a number of companies who prepare Development Applications and even they didn’t know how to find a relevant consultant.

20.01.2022 I’m learning more from my marketing people than I ever could have learned myself. I’m paying them to get me an outcome while they teach me about my businesswhat marketing course could have done that for me?

08.01.2022 Play the long game Your clients are not just one-time prospects. They come back to you when they want more help so it’s important to stay relevant to them in between purchases. This could mean providing new home buyers with referrals to trusted service providers well after your role in the house sale has been completed. ... Increase the value you provide your clients by having a great team of connections on-hand when they need them.

08.01.2022 What if I learned to do everything in my start-up? Let’s assume I master each task sufficiently to be successful in my business. The idea cost nothing. I was frustrated with trying to get an outcome for my consulting business, so I imagined my own listing platform. Next I talked with colleagues and people I thought would eventually benefit from my idea. I’m a reasonably good talker and the more I talked the better I became at being understood. It was fun. ... Then the website. I think most people would agree that a website person is the best bet to make a good, functioning website, but if I had have done it myself I would have had to follow hours of tutorials to get the outcome I wanted. Hours. Friends of mine have gone down this road. Stumbled mostly and eventually engaged a web developer. Social media marketing. Again, I could research, study, do the beta-testing stuff. But social media moves at a thousand miles an hour and do I have the time to stay on top of all the changes? Do I have the mental stamina? No. I’m not that person. So lets agree: there are things other people do better than me, so why do business coaches say we should learn to do everything ourselves before enlisting someone else to do it for us?

07.01.2022 It’s here! The new and EASY way for your clients to find you. They search for your services in their area and YOU get pre-qualified leads!

04.01.2022 Are you visible to your colleagues? It’s not all about competition. Keeping in touch with your colleagues and other players in your industry could open doors. What if your expertise were visible to people in related industries and they knew they could call on you to assist in their projects?... My network includes a hydrogeologist. It’s not my industry but they work on projects that often require environmental reporting and they are often asked by clients to refer an environmental scientist. That’s a project I get to hear about because a person in my network knows what I do and where I do it. WhoDoes.com.au lets other consultants find you easily and add you to their networks - and that means you become part of their team when they need you.

04.01.2022 WhoDoes.com.au lets you list by report or service type so it’s important that you know what you can offer. Start by writing down all the things you do in your business. Do they have specific names in your industry? Do they have multiple names? ... For example, A Dust Management Plan may also be covered by an Air Quality Management Plan.

03.01.2022 Sometimes your customers need a specific report but they don’t know who does that report. If they search online using that report name will they find you?

02.01.2022 Delegating in a start-up business. I don’t know how to do everything. I don’t even know what everything is to know I don’t know it. I know I had an idea. In the shower. Yep. I’m that person. I wrote the idea down, told people about it, tweaked it and ran headlong into getting a website. The idea itself has been the high point. Now I’m in business and finding out about all those unglamorous things a business needs. Like bookkeeping, website development and social media marketi...ng (and this post is not part of my marketing campaign btw). I could learn all these things. Some people say I should, but instead I’m learning to delegate or abdicate (my personal favourite). For those of you with an idea read on I hope I can share something useful over the coming weeks. For those of you who are happy in your careers, retirement or hermitages you too are welcome to share your point of view.
