25.01.2022 Chatting with the amazing Dr Lara Briden during out mentoring session this morning about the dreaded brain fog that plagues many women in late peri-menopause/menopause Foggy brain is real and can have a huge impact on day to life during this time It is now known that as oestrogen levels decline there can be a 25% drop in brain power... This happens because the brain loses its ability to utilise glucose for fuel. The brain then needs to switch to ketones as a secondary source of fuel. Ketones are made when the body switches from using carbohydrate/glucose for fuel to fats. If there is any level of insulin resistance, the brain fog will be worse!! Insulin resistance already reduces the ability of the body to utilise glucose.....the last thing you need when your brain is already deprived of glucose for energy!! 24.01.2022 I talk about this alot but it's sooooo important and this graph is a great summary of the close link between insulin and high androgen hormones. High insulin increases production of those androgen hormones including testosterone which trigger acne, unwanted facial hair and weight gain, particulary around the middle (apple shaped weight gain) Insulin resistance is also the leading cause of PCOS, the hormonal condition of androgen excess which affects ovulation and fertility.... Even if you don't have PCOS you can still have high insulin levels and not know it. I find doctors really don't test levels as much as is needed. Fasting insulin and/or glucose tolerance test with insulin will give you an idea of what is happening with your insulin levels. Other signs of insulin resistance are; acne weight gain around the middle skin tags always feeling hungry feeling REALLY tired after a higher carbohydrate meal acanthosis nigricans which is patches of darker coloured skin in skin folds fibroids can be caused by insulin resistance You may also experience the following symptoms due higher androgen hormones driven by insulin resistance hirsitism which is unwanted hair growth on chin and jaw (females) thining of scalp hair Do you suspect your insulin might be running high?

22.01.2022 How is your post ISO drinking habit going? . 1st day of listening and learning all about oestrogen detoxification reminded me of the laughs and jokes we've all made regarding our sneaky increased alcohol consumption over lockdown . 21.01.2022 This time of year it becomes all about the spring detox...better diets, more exercise and working on cutting out those bad habits that have crept in over winter but have you ever given much thought about your exposure to environmental toxins before? We are actually exposed to a myraid of environmental toxins daily, scary amounts to be honest, and some of these chemicals have the ability to completely upset your hormonal balance. 'Xenoestrogens' are powerful endocrine distr...upting chemicals found in plastics, body care products, cleaning products and pesticides that can mimic our own estrogens (but not in a good way). 19.01.2022 I've had some pretty big SIBO results come back lately and some of these poor clients have been putting up with their gut symptoms for so long I'm sure they have forgotten what its like to feel 'normal'. Keeping my protein & vegetables up at breakfast with some eggs gently whisked, added roasted vegetables (already done) kale, parsley & rocket with an olive oil and apple cider vinegar dressing. Handy tip is to always have some roasted vege in the fridge ready to throw onto a salad or add to an omelette #foodprep... In this situation we trialled an elimination diet which took out some of the most common foods known to trigger low grade inflammation and within 2 weeks she was already feeling so much better.... 11.01.2022 A wintery weekend calls for my favourite go-to 'Thai Pumpkin Soup' recipe which is one I've committed to memory long ago as it's so easy and tasty. It's gluten and dairy free but super creamy with a bit of a bite thanks to some added red curry paste I've got a few sniffly teens at the mo and like many kids of herbalists/naturopaths they shot back their liquid herbs without a blink of an eye (they've been taken them for years)... All my 3 kids love this soup, its packed with immune boosting Vitamin A (great for clear skin also) garlic and onion, anti-inflammatory ginger, healthy fats and awesome with some sourdough! I'm never one to follow recipes properly but if you want to give it a go this is a very rough overview of the recipe, it's very forgiving 1 kg pumpkin chopped 2 carrots chopped 1 medium sweet potato, chopped 1 onion roughly chopped 3 - 4 cloves of garlic Knob of fresh garlic peeled and chopped.... Heat approx 2 - 3 Tbln Olive oil in large pot, add onion, garlic and ginger, cook for a couple of mins then add some red or green curry paste to taste. Stir. Then add chopped vegetables, stir again. Add enough vegetable stock/broth to just cover the vegetables and a bay leaf. Simmer until veges are soft. Remove the bay leaf & blend all together with hand held mixer. Then add a can of coconut milk & a dash or soy sauce or g/f tamari, give it a quick whizz & add salt and pepper to taste. Yummy!
