25.01.2022 Your Weekly Dig with Mel It was this handsome fellow's birthday over the past week. Glenn has incredible inspiration, motivation and dedication towards all that we have created here on the farm and within our family, and its has been a wonderful opportunity to take time to honor that.... .. with the gift of an electric chainsaw sharpener. Because the task list is lengthy, He's pictured here taking a break from the latest project with the ridiculously bright coloured and sweet ice-cream cake that has now become a yearly occurrence due to his ever lasting addiction to ice-cream, made with great love and candor (and much taste-testing) by the big girls. And Glenn has been on the chainsaw all week, clearing the scrub off the irrigation dam wall, and as the dam is nearly empty, we'll have an excavator in over the coming weeks to clean out the dam and reinforce the walls after years of neglect. There are two more dams onsite that will eventually get the same TLC, but it will be done in stages as we have time and use the water. Just in time to catch the rains that are predicted for the end of the year. I'll be getting our tribe to get their rain dances perfected, perhaps you can too!

24.01.2022 Your weekly Dig with Mel 2020 has certainly been a year like no other! Global, national and local issues have defined our year and, in many ways, our future generations. ... We started the year with our country on fire. Our skies full of unhealthy air and the loss and devastation of land, lives and wildlife, all heartbreaking beyond words. Without having the chance to catch our breath, we had a global pandemic on our doorstep. Borders closed before our eyes, we saw the collapse of industries, massive job losses and the fabric of our community torn apart as we were isolated from family, friends and loved ones and the ability to do the simple things in life we had taken for granted, like school drop offs and grabbing a movie and meal with friends, no longer possible. Yet, as we fast approach the end of 2020, we see reason for great optimism and celebration as we have been through all of this and come out the other end. Definitely not the same people as when we started this year and journey, but hopefully wiser, more grateful for what we have, stronger and more resilient. So, to all our growers, customers and friends, we firstly and foremost say a sincere and huge thank you! It has been a challenging year for everyone however we couldn’t have made it through this year without your support, your patience and your kindness, so again we say Thank You! When we look ahead to 2021 there is much to be excited about. On site here at Wholefood Organic Farm extensive earth works will be undertaken to ensure a sustainable water supply, we will continue down the path to Organic Certification, we will host many more onsite events, and open the Farm Gate Stall a second day each week... watch this space! As always, we hope that 2021 brings you much peace, health and happiness, that you stay safe and well over the festive period and that you get to enjoy a moment to take a breath and reflect on the year that was

23.01.2022 [FYI:] LOCAL AVOCADOS NEARING END OF SEASON! Yes, I'm so sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the trees once abundant in delicious avocados grown without sprays, are now almost vacant in preparation for next season's crop. 21.01.2022 When we can't source a staple item directly from one of our local farmers, we use a third party buyer who sources interstate where necessary. Here is a note from them about the challenges of seasonality and Mother Nature: "...Historically, this time of the year is always a bit tricky to negotiate. It is that transition time between when our Queensland growers finish up, and when our southern growers start up. On top of that, this year we had some inclement weather, which res...ulted in some of our Queensland growers finishing up earlier than expected, and also delayed our Victorian growers. Needless to say, the quality of the produce also suffered during this time. On the upside, it appears we are over the worst of it! Our Victorian growers are in full swing with broccoli, cauliflower (finally!), cabbages, chinese veg, tomatoes, and strawberries. Growers in North Queensland are producing some lovely red capsicum, and both jap and butternut pumpkin. Expect prices to come down as supply becomes steady. South Australia will be joining us soon with their celery, and our Tasmanian friends will be supplying us with carrots and brassicas in December! Yes! Still limited are sweet potatoes and lemons, which has driven the price up. The quality of the lemons, in particular, isn't great but unfortunately, it is all we have access to until about January. As always, please let us know of any issues you have with them, and we'll fix it up for you. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding during this time."
20.01.2022 Did you realise this was even a thing? More bad news for conventionally grown fruit and veg: "...Irradiation decreases the vitamin and nutritional content of food and disrupts its molecular structure, producing free radicals and potentially harmful chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde and cyclobutanones. Irradiation is being promoted as an alternative to some post-harvest chemicals that are being phased out. Numerous non-chemical alternatives exist. Irradiation is n...ot an alternative to chemical treatments. At best, irradiation may substitute for some post-harvest chemical treatments. However, the food most likely to be subject to irradiation is food produced using conventional agricultural processes which today means using chemicals and pesticides and possibly GMOs from seed development through harvesting. Labelling is inadequate and must be improved to ensure the public’s right to choose. Current laws already allow shops to use a sign close by to irradiated produce, rather than actual stickers or labels and fail to prescribe mandatory wording for the irradiation statement, leaving the messaging up to marketing companies. Neither the word radiation nor irradiation is required.

15.01.2022 Your Weekly Dig with Mel When we eat organic produce straight from the farm, the flavour never fails to delight us. Apples taste delicious. Strawberries are unbelievably fragrant. And the greens actually taste green!... Why is that? Many people buy organic produce because it’s beneficial to the environment. But if you’ve ever compared it to non-organic food, you will have noticed the difference in taste. While it feels good ethically, there is a reason organic food tastes different to non-organic: Organic fruit and vegetables tend to grow more slowly and have lower water content, which contributes to the fuller flavour some people experience. Not all food is created equal. Organic fruit and veggies are grown in nourishing conditions that contribute to a crop’s overall health. The more intense flavour in organic produce comes from two main factors: higher antioxidant levels and, on average, lower crop yields. When there are more nutrients and nitrogen available per plant in a crop, it concentrates the flavour naturally. And that's how food should actually taste. While synthetic fertilizers dilute flavours by bulking up the veggies with fillers like water (in order to speed up the appearance of the ripening process), organic farmers ensure there are enough nutrients naturally available in the soil so the crops can soak ‘em up over time. It gives organic food real, wholesome deliciousness. Not only does the food taste better by itself, you’ll find your cooking requires fewer additives. Less salt, less sauce. Because you’ll relish the veg-tastic bite on your palate.

12.01.2022 Your Weekly Dig with Mel During the week we had a query about why our prices are higher than the local supermarket. To be perfectly honest, the two products are miles apart in taste, nutrient density and toxic chemical inputs during the growing and processing. Doctors found the brain tumor after Diego had a seizure a...nd was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery. The surgery was only partially successful, and was follow with six weeks of radiation therapy. Diego and his wife Hayley are well aware of the need for natural therapies to compliment and conventional therapeutics, and have been accessing a variety of treatments to support Diego's immune system and promote healing. Every week we donate a large box of organic fruits and veggies to assist him and his family to reduce their toxic load and promote healing with nutrient dense, fresh foods, and we are deeply grateful for the donations we receive that go directly to supporting this box. in short, the battle is far from over. Diego has received positive news that an Australian surgeon can operate on the tumor, however the $100,000 fee must be paid upfront. While we're always grateful for any donations we receive for the fruit and veggies we provide each week, Please consider your capacity to contribute to the Go Fund Me campaign to help with costs for the treatment as it is not covered by Medicare, and you too can be apart of their success story in the face of pending tragedy.
