25.01.2022 A lot!! Your gut is home to trillions of microbes- some fungi, some viruses, but mostly bacteria. Those bacteria are constantly in communication with your brain and nervous system. ... They interact through nerve signals that travel both ways, mostly via the vagus nerve. They communicate via hormones; hunger and fullness hormones are obvious, but stress hormones affect the brain and also alter the balance of gut bacteria. Then there are neurotransmitters made in the gut and active in the brain. Specifically the neurotransmitters that are calming and relaxing: GABA and serotonin. Finally, gut bacteria make and modulate inflammatory compounds and influence their movement - and the movement of other toxins- in and out of the gut, blood and brain. This is one of the most important ways the gut affects brain health and mood because if inflammatory compounds and or toxins move into the brain long term, they will wreak havoc. The good news is, there are loads of strategies you can use to heal and improve your gut health and in the process, support your mental & brain health too. It’s important to: - Address gut issues early - Work with a knowledgeable practitioner - Understand it’s an individual approach (your issues and microbes are unique!) - Know it’s a long term approach If your gut needs some help, reach out for a consult or send me a DM with Qs. Love your guts guys!! #wholehealth #guthealth #gutbrainconnection #healthybacteria #mentalhealth #naturalhealth #healthstartsinthegut #complementarymedicine #functionalfood #foodforhealth #guthealing #wholefoodplantbased #wholefoodmama #wholefoodnutrition #sydneynutritionist

24.01.2022 We say this all the time, but your gut really can reveal so much about what you're feeling. In the complementary medicine world, we call this the Gut-Brain Axis. It's a pretty new area of science, but a really old human wisdom. ... Think of these common sayings we have that connect our feelings with an immediate gut response... (Warning: Coarse language!!) Butterflies in your tummy: You're nervous (flight response) Scared shitless: You're so afraid your gut literally tightens up so you can't release (fright response) Shitting myself: You're so scared you lose your bowels. Physiologically, this serves to lighten your body so you can run like hell (flight response) I had a gut feeling: You just knew it; something unsettled or alerted you; there was a felt signal (gut/brain axis) Your gut and your brain are talking to each other all the time! What your gut is saying is REALLY important to your physical and mental health. Listen to your gut...what is yours saying?

24.01.2022 I promised I'd share some Blue Zone inspired recipes! This one, obviously Japanese inspired, is my Miso-glazed Salmon & Soba noodle bowl. The important bits to write home about are getting used to using miso in your cooking, and the many wonders of soba noodles.... In line with Blue Zone eating, this dish is mostly made of veges, including fresh spices, with a little wild fish, and a whole lotta of fibre! Looks pretty. Tastes sensational! The recipe is a bit long, but you can check it out following the recipe tab via link in bio. Hara hachi bu !!

23.01.2022 Cheers to the Canadians! Last year, the Canadian Govt introduced these new food guidelines. It was a bit controversial, because it's pretty different from the old food pyramids most of us grew up with. ... And it treads on the toes of a few industries, especially meat & dairy. But that's the point. These guidelines were INDEPENDENTLY researched for optimal health outcomes, regardless of industry. So what's the diff? It's simplified to this portion-based plate visual (instead of a rainbow, or for Aussies and Americans, a pyramid) 50% of ALL FOOD comes from veggies and fruits (previously, grains were the largest category) Only WHOLE GRAINS are recommended; not white bread, muffins and crumpets, which still exist in our recommendations. PROTEIN includes plant based protein like legumes, pulses, beans, nuts, seeds and tofu, as well as meat, fish, eggs and dairy. Dairy, notably, is not a category itself - it's up there in the protein. For the first time, the guidelines address the health risks associated with alcohol. They include lifestyle recommendations, like eating slowly, cooking at home and eating out less often. In all, it's AMAZING! It's a similar foundation to what I teach in my programs and is a tool I share with clients often. Check it out yourself or get a copy here: https://food-guide.canada.ca/en/ If we all followed the Canadian lead, we'd be a much healthier, happier people and planet!

23.01.2022 As Mamas, we spend a crapload of time looking after other people. We run ourselves ragged making sure everyone else is OK and meeting everyone else's needs, but we forget one thing: If Mama puts herself last, no one is a winner.... It's the old airplane face mask scenario...I we don't look after ourselves, we can't look after anyone else. Take a little time this week to think about something you can do to care FOR YOU! What will yours be?

23.01.2022 In winter, as digestion slows down and metabolism does the same, you can use foods to give them both a kick in the right direction. Soups are great because being so well cooked means they don't require lots of digestive energy. Plant based soups are better, because plant foods need less energy to breakdown, be absorbed, and be removed than animal foods.... Herbs and spices add warmth, flavour, digestive enzyme, bile and liver stimulation and more. They definitely keep the whole system burning. This soup has loads of both AND uses the best in-season winter vegetables adding further winter support in the shape of immune boosting Vitamin C, Carotenes and atioxidants. Recipe link in bio. Or try my 1 week Winter Cleanse - available any time via bio link.

17.01.2022 Did this pic get you day-dreaming? If you haven't heard about life in the Blue Zones, you're in for a treat! Not all Blue Zones are Mediterranean paradises (2 are!), but they're all idyllic.... Blue Zones are 5 places in the world with the most nonogenarians and centenarians - people who live till over 90 or 100. They're not just old, they're disease free and active well into old age. How do they do it? I've covered it all on my blog this week (link in bio), but here's a quick lowdown of what all Blue Zones have in common: They eat wholefoods With abundant vegetables with limited fruit They eat loads of fibre With small amounts of home-grown animal foods Lots of legumes, beans and pulses With less food overall They move consistently throughout the day Have a sense of purpose and belonging With inter-generational support, all helping care for their young and old With social support and connection built into the fabric of their days They are beautiful, long-living, disease free people. And we can learn so much from them. Find out more about life in the Blue Zones, head over to my blog for a quick read.

15.01.2022 Morning run...This is my reward for the effort! (My home town too!) Exercising in nature gives you more energy from the sun plus essential vitamin D that’s hard to get from food alone. That vitamin D is vital for a healthy mood and strong immune system. Take in the !!... Morning sunlight also helps regulate your melatonin and circadian rhythm which can improve your ability to sleep at night, again, vital for healthy happy mood & energy. Fun fact- outdoor exercise exposes you to bacteria from your local trees, plants and soils, which is supports healthy balance of your own nasal, oral, lung and gut bacteria! Who knew? If you can, get outdoors in nature for your daily exercise too- especially if you only have an hour. 12.01.2022 It’s Friday - yay! I couldn’t end this week without one last message of gut love and help. I’m sure everyone has heard the old Hippocrates saying ‘all disease starts in the gut’ - how the heck did he know back then?!? - but he was right on the money!... The good news is that health can start in the gut too! Time and again I see women in my clinic with digestive and gut problems. Sometimes they come for something entirely different, but poor digestive function is underlying everything. Because gut health affects whole health. Swipe right to see if you have some of the most common signs your gut is out of whack. If you do, don’t ignore them. You can heal your gut. And sooner is always better than later. Need help with this, come see me! Use the consults link or webpage. Or just send a DM if you have some Qs! Love to ya’ll! Xx

11.01.2022 Even though burgers and fries are in the pic, they are not the big issue... They're part of the prob for sure, but the bigger issue is the stuff you don't see as harmful. The 'normal' stuff: White rice, white bread, white flour, white sugar... Processed meats Meat and dairy from poorly raised animals + vegetable oils and hydrogenated oils And all the foods made from those: Breakfast cereals, sandwich bread, wraps, crackers, pasta, sauces, dressings, regular meat, mince, sausages, yoghurt etc. Foods that are so highly processed they offer little in the form of nutrition. They tick off 'protein, carbs and fats' but nutrients are limited. Benefits for the body are limited. Negative impacts on the body are plenty. And we haven't even included the burgers, fries and 'junk foods.' Now think of all the foods these push out of your diet: The ones with all the nutrients. The ones that make your body sing. And dance and do whatever else it is you want to do .. That's why we need a return to whole food eating. If you want to know more, shoot me a DM or hit the link in my bio. I have loads of options to help you get there!

11.01.2022 No one wants to count calories, right? And no one wants to be constantly thinking about what they put in their mouth. How much is enough, too much, not enough? It would drive me INSANE!!... I don't live like that, and I don't encourage clients to live that way either. It's unsustainable torture! I am an absolute believer in keeping it simple, and these are some of the simplest tips I give people about portions sizes and quantities. 1. If you're not hungry, don't eat! We're conditioned to eat at certain times, but it's often not necessary. How long since you experienced actual hunger? 2. If you're full, stop eating. There is a tipping point at which we begin to consume more than we need. Listen to your body and avoid that point. 3. Use your hands to measure portion sizes that are right for YOU: Your two hands cupped (as in the picture) will give you a serve of fruit or veg. Your palm is roughly 1 serving of protein. Your cupped hand will hold your personal serving size of whole grains. To put it into practice, get on my next program! You'll learn tips like this and so much more, to keep yourself healthy, without going nuts about it! (-:

09.01.2022 All women are super, but some of us to take it to the next level. We're strong, capable and independent. We know how to get sh*t done and we go ahead and do it. For everyone. And I see it so often in my clinic. So this week, I'm sharing tips on how to know if you're a Super Woman and what strategies you can use to care for yourself and prevent burnout. I also share some of the best self care strategies, tools and resources I used during my toughest times. 06.01.2022 People sometimes ask me why I don't just sell my programs as a 'do it yourself' type thing. Education and support is the reason. We all have the best intention of making long term lasting changes, especially when it comes to dietary changes.... But change is so much more relevant when we understand the reasons behind it AND are given step-by-step instructions on how to do it. When making change makes sense, you're much more likely to stick with it. That's why my programs designed the way they are. I deliver the instructions, the step-by-step and the how to, as well as the why. Why am I doing this? What will it do for me? Why is is different/ better than something else. Knowledge, as always, is power. If you want some of that knowledge and power for yourself, jump on to my next 7-day Program - it starts October 12th. Early Bird registration has just opened. Hope to see you there (-: https://www.wholefoodmama.com.au//one-whole-week-7-day-cle

06.01.2022 Feel like you've hit pause on life? Are you reflecting and re-assessing (and not doing much else...?) This is SO Winter! (and SO me right now!!) In Winter, we go inward naturally.... We use less energy and we have less energy. Metabolism slows. Digestive function slows. Circulation slows. As a result, we can feel more tired, less motivated, become constipated, bloated, gain weight, feel less social, less engaged and may have decreased mood too. Managing your health in winter is a balance of honouring the normal processes of slowing down, without getting 'stuck.' Food choices, cooking methods, movement, rest, warmth and sleep all play apart. I'll share some tips with you here in the next few days. How are you feeling so far this winter?

02.01.2022 Food aside, when it comes to body cleansing and detoxing, there are HEAPS of supportive natural therapies and I reckon I've tried most of them !! Some purely for pleasure. Some during my yoga training. Others I used for my own health. Here are some of the body cleansing practices I have used/ still use or occasionally go back to as needed...... - Massage - Mobilises toxins. Lymphatic massage great following illness. Hot Yoga - Movement & sweat to up daily toxin excretion. Sauna - A good sweat to release toxins through sweat. Hot/Cold baths - Moving from warm mineral baths into cool pools - invigorating! FIR Sauna - Deeper detox; said to work at cellular level. Colonic Irrigation - Intense. Not for everyone. Many benefits. I found supportive for mood issues. Shankaprakshalana - The yogis version of a colonic. A bit messy. Also intense. Extremely cleansing and clarifying. Have you tried any of these?

01.01.2022 I'm not a fan of the old detox in a box or a quick-fix juice fast. True body cleansing should aim to minimise toxins entering the body and maximise the movement of toxins OUT of the body. It should stimulate and support the organs involved in those processes.... It should replenish your stores of healing and energising nutrients. It should also allow you to move through the process with gentle kindness, allowing your body to rest as you heal and reset. Theres alot that goes IN to a deep cleanse - but OH-SO-MUCH to get out of it! For a deeper dive into full body cleansing, grab a copy of my Body Cleansers e-guide - it's on sale! https://www.wholefoodmama.com.au/guides/body-cleansers

01.01.2022 Another food bomb! This morning, brunch was an egg on sourdough with this amazing bunch of clean green goodies: Avo... Bean sprouts Mint leaves Basil sauce Tahini Pumpkin seeds Sunflower seeds Lemon Black sesame The net result of that combo - bitter, green, antioxidant, good fats, fibre, B vitamins and more is this... Helpful to digest the meal, good to stimulate the liver, easy to move through bowel. Good. Clean. Food. You can totally enjoy good, clean, body cleansing foods- even when ur not cleansing. And when it’s this good, why wouldn’t you? Thanks @byron_general_store !
