25.01.2022 Conversation is a great way to include a reluctant eater. It is a part of the meal that they can be successful and confident with. We have two "go to" conversation starters....."what were the best two things that happened to you today?" and 'what are you most grateful for this week?". They don't have to be complicated just make sure they are at a level that everyone can participate in meaningfully. Mealtimes are the prefect opportunity to connect and get to know your family members! #wholesomemealtimes#WMT#bringbackthejoy#fussyeaters#fussykids#fussyeater#fussyeatingtips#therapist#dinner#pickyeater#feeding#autism#parenting#parentingtips#parentinghacks#autism#autismeats#pickyeaterproblems

25.01.2022 So excited to be part of the latest and very fabulous Adelady magazine. It is full of what our awesome South Australia has to offer and it’s free! Pick one up from your local Romeos, Goodstart, Century 21 or cafe.

24.01.2022 Wow, can teenage boys eat!

19.01.2022 When you offer your reluctant eater a different food make sure you and they believe you are expecting a "yes". There is no pressure to say yes, of course, there is no difference in your reaction as to whether they say "yes" or "no" but they need to know that you believe they CAN do it.

19.01.2022 This is something worth considering. If your reluctant eater has a sibling who is a more confident eater make sure they are having a positive impact on the mealtime. Use them to model how a food could be eaten in a different way or just encourage them to talk positively about their experience with the foods and to use facts when they describe foods. If they put your reluctant eater down when they refuse foods pull them aside and have a chat to them about how it is a more challenging task for the reluctant eater than it is for them and how they can support them at mealtimes just as you would if one was struggling on the sporting field.

17.01.2022 So proud to be part of the latest and very fabulous Adelady magazine. It is full of the best of South Australia and it’s free! Pick one up today from Romeos, Century 21, Goodstarts or your local cafe.

13.01.2022 In light of it being R U OK day today I am reposting from a few weeks ago. Be kind to yourselves! Feeding a picky eater is HARD and it is not your fault. Have a night off and give them their favourite meal whether it fits your view of healthy or not. And remember, you and they will get there! You got this feeders/cooks!

12.01.2022 Well, here in South Australia we have had a crazy 24 hours. At lunchtime yesterday we were informed we were to be put in to quite a strict lockdown at midnight last night, a lockdown most of us weren't really expecting or prepared for. I must admit after the shock of the sudden announcement I felt a little overwhelmed as I got my head around the new rules, cancelling clients, getting a child home from school camp and having 4 children home from school etc. One of my first tho...ughts was if I had enough food at home to feed us all for a few days. You know the deal, we have all been through this in some form over the last few months! Then I took a minute to think about the fussy eaters (and their parents) and how their feelings must be amplified. They weren't just thinking 'I hope there is still some pasta' left on the shelves, they were thinking 'I hope there is San Remo spiral pasta left" or my child might not eat all week! As parents of fussy eaters now is just the time we need to be calm, kind and flexible with our children. The more uncertain the world around us is the more we need to control the challenging things in our lives that are controllable aka food for fussy eaters. Be kind and understanding about food choices your children make this week. Our fussy ones will need extra assurances to feel safe and relaxed going in to mealtimes and they may need some rules relaxed to cope with the changes in their lives. The many changes will also offer a perfect opportunity to open up a conversation about flexible thinking around food and mealtimes but more about that in an upcoming video. #wholesomemealtimes#WMT#bringbackthejoy#fussyeaters#fussykids#fussyeater#fussyeatingtips#therapist#dinner#pickyeater#feeding#autism#parenting#parentingtips#parentinghacks#autism#autismeats#pickyeaterproblems See more

11.01.2022 I was reminded today that it is pretty hard to focus on something like feeding a child for months or years on end without a break. If you need a break you should take one! I have just switched right off from one of my fussy eaters for a few months (thanks COVID) but noticed his lunch box today which he packs himself. After a break I feel ready to be productive and positive in guiding his lunch box back to something we can both feel comfortable with! #fussyeaters#adelaidemums#melbournemums#lunchboxideas#pickyeaters#feedingtherapy#fussyfeedingtips#toddlers

10.01.2022 We know we should be offering variety but realistically we all tend to serve a certain range of meals on rotation! A really easy way to add variety to a regular dish is by adding spices. Roast vegetables are liked by most of us and is super easy so I serve it fairly often. To keep it a bit different I often change up the spice I sprinkle on top. Salt and pepper is an obvious choice but I also use other spices including turmeric, cumin and paprika. Spices have lots of health b...enefits and the flavour change can be big or small depending on the amount you use. If you are trying to teach that small changes are ok be gentle with your sprinkle amount but if you are trying to change up a favourite to prevent burn out go a bit heavier on the spice! #wholesomemealtimes#WMT#bringbackthejoy#fussyeaters#fussykids#fussyeater#fussyeatingtips#therapist#dinner#pickyeater#feeding#autism#parenting#parentingtips#parentinghacks#autism#autismeats#pickyeaterproblems#adelaidemums#melbournemums See more

09.01.2022 I got asked today about tomato sauce. If the child eats a food covered in sauce only should they be allowed to have it like that? My answer is ..yes. They are still having an exposure to the food (and getting the nutrients) despite it being smothered in sauce. As they grow in confidence with the food you can start to encourage smaller amounts of sauce. Dipping in to sauce rather than squirting it all over can be a way to control the sauce amount more easily.

08.01.2022 When you have a fussy eater it is easy to stop offering them new foods. They are only going to say "no" anyway, aren't they? It can be tiresome and seem wasteful to keep offering them foods but if they aren't given the opportunity to say "yes" then they absolutely won’t. Keep offering and one day you will catch them at just the right moment and that "yes" could be the start of a new food for them.

07.01.2022 Research tells us that when we put pressure on our kids to eat certain foods they are more likely to avoid foods. So my one tip to help children feel more comfortable to try a food is to simply not talk about what they have or haven't eaten for a whole meal. Talk about other fun stuff, school, friends, sport, cousins, anything but the food. When the focus is off the food they are MORE likely to try it. In fact, I challenge you to go a whole week without commenting about what they have or haven't eaten. You can ask if they want more or if they are full but otherwise no comment about what has been eaten. Watch them blossom as the pressure reduces and they feel a sense of control of their own eating.

06.01.2022 Sometimes the instinctive language we use around mealtimes and food isn’t the most helpful language for our reluctant (fussy) eaters. Have a listen to pick up a quick and easy tip when you are communicating with your fussy eater at mealtimes.

05.01.2022 You all know how much I love sprinkles and that when I say sprinkles I don’t just mean 100’s and 1000’s. Today I sprinkled broccoli, rice and capsicum.

03.01.2022 Thanks Feeding Matters for sharing just how many families this impacts.

03.01.2022 Tips for helping you and your fussy eater at Christmas lunch.

02.01.2022 If you want your child to eat a greater variety of foods one of the best things you can do is to model eating a varied diet yourself. Show your child that you try new foods, that you work towards being healthy, that it is something you are committed to. Show them it takes planning and thought to eat better, or do anything better in life! Sometimes you wont like the new food and that is ok. Show them that trying a new food is often a great new experience. In the process of learning to eat a more varied diet they will learn some great lessons they can apply to lots of different areas in their lives. #wholesomemealtimes#WMT#bringbackthejoy#fussyeaters#fussykids#fussyeater#fussyeatingtips#therapist#dinner#pickyeater#feeding#autism#parenting#parentingtips#parentinghacks#autism#autismeats#pickyeaterproblems
