24.01.2022 There’s no doubt that refined sugar is unhealthy. It doesn’t hold any nutritional value, is very addictive and eating excess of highly processed sugars leads to various diseases including obesity, diabetes, cancer or autoimmune disorders. Luckily there are a few different options to substitute refined sugar. These are the ones I use the most in my treats: Medjool dates - dates are amazing for the digestive system. They are high in fiber and contain a variety of vitamins and... minerals, including potassium, copper and magnesium. I often use them in my raw tart shells. Maple syrup - pure maple syrup is a very good source of the trace mineral manganese. It also has a good supply of zinc, calcium and potassium. It’s important to choose pure maple syrup, not maple flavoured syrup, which is a sugar syrup with added flavourings. Raw honey - it’s a honey that has not been pasteurized, clarified or filtered so it retains more of the phytonutrients than standard honey. It’s a great source of antioxidants, and has antibacterial and antifungal properties Coconut sugar - is a natural sugar produced from the sap of the coconut palm. It has a lower glycemc index than many other sweeteners, meaning it causes a slower rise in blood sugar level. Additionally, it’s considered the most sustainably produced sugar. Rapadura sugar (also called panela) - originally from South America - is pure unrefined juice extracted from sugar cane and evaporated over low heats. Because of the lack of processing, this sugar retains some minerals including iron, potassium, calcium and phosphorus as well as vitamins A and C. Of course they are still sugars and should be eaten in moderation, but when mixed together with other wholesome ingredients like raw cacao, nuts and fresh fruits (or even vegetables), you can enjoy your cake and stay on track with a healthy lifestyle.
