24.01.2022 Congratulations to the Whorouly Football & Netball Club.aka The Lions! They are one of 64 successful groups to receive a Business and Community Recovery Grant... from Council. Tell us about your club? Our club is a member of the Ovens and King Football Netball League. We operate five netball teams, two men’s football teams and two women’s football teams. We have an enthusiastic committee of 12 people supported by many volunteers. What are the plans for your grant money? The club plans to run two resilience and gender based programs. These programs will be conducted in the Wangaratta/Whorouly area. Our club, together with participating schools and community groups will benefit through improved resilience and self-reliance of members. Strengthened relationships between members including greater respect and tolerance will improve team cohesion, strengthening the club’s culture and performance. Improved mental health and resilience of participants will be an outcome that will permeate through families, schools, and extended community connections. Personal self-reliance will be a life-long attribute that will stand participants in good stead throughout their life journey and create a buffer against anxiety and suicidal tendencies. How will your project benefit our community? These programs are squarely aimed at improving the mental health, resilience and gender awareness of participants. ‘Her Code’ Aims to create a safe space for women to cultivate and practice their voice. Enabling participants to express their authentic selves beyond the room, free from the limitations of society's expectations and behaviours. ‘Breaking the Man Code’ is a program delivered to schools, sporting clubs and organisations that invites men to deconstruct and rewrite the ‘Rule of Man’. It will disrupt outdated male stereotypes that can be destructive to team and club culture. The programs will enable our club to show leadership, both as a sporting club and for individual participants. We have implemented a range of mental health awareness initiatives at our club and we see these programs as an important component of that package. Outcomes will be sustained and lifelong, improving the social and psychological health of our organisation. The programs will support our Sexual Harassment Policy and Equal Opportunity Policy to ensure that our club and other participating community groups are recognised as safe places for men and women to enjoy participating in sport, volunteering, coaching, spectating and socialising. We pride ourselves as being a ‘family club’. Running these programs will prove that we mean what we say. Well done to all the officials, players and dedicated volunteers, best of luck in the 2021 season.
