02.01.2022 LINCOLN, WHYALLA AND ROXBY AIR ROUTES AT RISK - MT GAMBIER AND K.I. TO FOLLOW The Federal Government has introduced a law into the Parliament that requires secu...rity screening at Port Lincoln, Roxby Downs and Whyalla airports. Whilst they have placed the security requirement on the airport operators, they are refusing to pay for the ongoing operating costs. Whyalla airfares will go up by between $53 and $69. The cost at the other airports has not been published by the Government, but the price hike won’t be insignificant. In all cases, the viability of the current services to these destinations is in doubt. Mount Gambier and Kingscote are not on the list for now, but this is ‘thin edge of the wedge’ stuff. Already the Government has analysed screening costs in K.I. - I expect the analysis to be released to me under FOI laws shortly, which I will share. I’ve moved to disallow the law in the Senate on 12 May 2020, at least until the Feds agree to pay the cost. It’s unfair on people who live in the regions who already pay a lot more for airfares that those that live in the major cities. Prior to the Senate vote, I want to table a petition in the Senate.
