16.01.2022 HMAS Cerberus is nicknamed ‘Cradle of the Navy’ and since its official opening 100 years ago, the establishment has provided basic training courses for Navy’s n...ewest Sailors at the Royal Australian Navy Recruit School. Hundreds of RAN Band members have passed through the Cerberus gates to commence their Navy career at Recruit School, and our newest member ABMUSN Matthew Hurditch is no different. Ordinarily, Musician trainees then go on to complete the Musician Initial Entry Training (MIET) course at the Defence Force School of Music (DFSM), Simpson Barracks. However, AB Hurditch, along with other recent joiners, has attended the MIET course via distance learning whilst remaining in situ at HMAS Cerberus. Whilst on course trainees are instructed by DFSM staff and Navy Band mentors in specific military band training components such as marching band drill and techniques, military side drumming, ensemble performance, music theory and other unique tenants of military music life. The course forms the basis for learning that continues throughout a Navy Musician’s career. AB Hurditch said I enjoyed getting back to playing after Recruit School training and learning new skills, such as parade drumming. It has also been an opportunity to refresh some of the music theory knowledge from prior studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The University of Sydney". "I am really looking forward to playing with a professional wind band again", AB Hurditch explained, (after not having done so for seven months). He brings a wealth of performance experience to the Navy Band, having worked with the Corrective Services NSW Band and the NSW Police Band. AB Hurditch joined RAN Band Sydney this week! The band wishes him a warm welcome, congratulations on completing the MIET course and all the very best with his first posting! #ServinginHarmony #NavyBand #AusNavy #MilitaryBand #MilitaryMusic #OurPeople #ProudtoServe #Euphonium #BrassSection #OurStory #Capability

01.01.2022 Go Navy Band, well done!!

01.01.2022 A great AGM Saturday night, which included our parade. Whilst the outdoor parade and drill was cancelled, our new updated constitution and bi-laws were officially accepted by the membership. Mr Reg Warnes retains the position of Band Secretary, and Music Director was officially elected as the Band Treasurer. In addition, Child Safe Officer, Health Safety and Welfare Officer, First Aid Officer, COVID19 Marshal and Food Safety Officer, were all retained by the portfolio holders.... The only outstanding position yet to filled is that of Band President. Not only was the Constitution and bi-laws tabled, but our Annual Financial Report. Unfortunately it was reported that as a result of the COVID19 Emergency, the band has lost an estimated $1,713.15. The further impact of the emergency will be reflected in the 2021 report. Thanks all members, friends and the public for the success of the AGM and Inspection night. Special mentions go to Ann Staunton, Band Secretary of Port Lincoln City Band, (Special Guest) and the marvellous support of The Salvation Army for the use of their Cafe facilities & Hall, as well as the support for rehearsals in the larger hall due to COVID19 restrictions. Shout out to Major Patsy Shadbolt and partner Chris for a wonderful evening meal!!! We must also thank Whyalla City Council for the help in funding this occasion and the Incorporation process for the band! See more
