20.01.2022 Good Morning fellow Hams, here is the latest visual adaptation of the VK1WIA Weekly News Service, ALARA Edition, for your viewing pleasure. https://youtu.be/3eZF4Cy-YW4 Another big week with over 200 views, and some more subscribers along the way, so thank you. For those that use the video for your own ATV Broadcasts, just giving you the heads up that next weeks may not be ready for Sunday morning depending on my schedule to get the video completed, or it will be a very basic... video just so there is something to be played. With that said, Merry Christmas to all, Take care travelling and stay safe. 73, VK5BD See more

17.01.2022 WSJT-X 2.4.0 Introduces New Digital Protocol Q65 12/31/2020 WSJT-X version 2.4.0 has introduced a new digital protocol called Q65, which is designed for minimal two-way QSOs over especially difficult propagation paths, the Quick Start Guide says.... https://physics.princeton.edu/puls/k1jt/Q65_Quick_Start.pdf On paths with Doppler spread more than a few hertz, the weak-signal performance of Q65 is the best among all WSJT-X modes. Q65 is particularly effective for tropospheric scatter, ionospheric scatter, and EME on VHF and higher bands, as well as other types of fast-fading signals. The new protocol uses 65-tone frequency-shift keying and builds on the demonstrated weak-signal strengths of QRA64, introduced in 2016. User messages and sequencing are identical to those in FT4, FT8, FST4, and MSK144. Q65 employs a unique tone to sync time and frequency. As with JT65, this ‘sync tone’ is readily visible on the waterfall spectral display, the Guide said. Unlike JT65, synchronization and decoding are effective even when meteor pings or other short signal enhancements are present. Transmit/receive sequence lengths of 15, 30, 60, 120, and 300 seconds are available. According to the Guide, Q65 will enable stations with a modest Yagi and 100 W or more and to work one another on 6 meters at distances up to ~1600 kilometers at most times, in dead band conditions. Via ARRL.

08.01.2022 Amateur Radio as a Public Service, you can make your contribution! WIA is looking actively to revitalise working groups and EMCOM is not an exemption; right now, we are looking actively for expressions of interest from WIA members with a background in emergency management and emergency communications to be part of the WIA EMCOM working group. ... Natural disasters are just around the corner and every country must be prepared in a unique and coordinated response. IARU encourages its Member Societies to be an active part involved with national authorities and other Societies in the region to generate effective strategies. Admin Update : This post above was not approved by the WIA Board but has been left in place in the public interest of open dialogue and discussion on EMCOMs in the Australian context. EMCOMs is recognised internationally as an important part of the Radio Amateur service by the ITU and IARU, however the situation in AUstralia is quite unique and not widely understood. Also unlike most other jurisdictions ( ie USA) the Australian regulator does NOT recognise EMCOMs as part of the definition of the Radio Amateur Service. It is also interesting to note that the US regulator (FCC), whilst recognising the important contribution of amateur radio in emergencies, clearly states tha AR is NOT an emergency service.

07.01.2022 WIA offers assistance to AMC to implement 2x1 Contest Callsigns. The Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) has offered to help the Australian Maritime College (AMC) with the implementation of the 2X1 Contest callsigns. COVID and other workload related delays have impacted the start and issuing of the new 2x1 callsign block allocations which were announced in December 2020 by AMC as being available when ready to issue these callsigns https://www.amc.edu.au//New-callsign-tem...plate-02-Dec-2020. For several years, the WIA has conducted an Annual Contesting Champion Trophy and the applicable scoring ranks Australian contest operators as per activity. Peter Clee VK8ZZ WIA Secretary said, "We (WIA), post the scores on line that show who are the active contesters in Australia, it is posted on the WIA Website." Contest Championship rules can be found here: https://www.wia.org.au/membe/contests/contestchampionrules/ Contest Champion Rules Contest Champion - VK4PJ Peter Brown Trophy. The WIA Contest Champion is awarded annually for the best combined effort in WIA Sponsored Contests. www.wia.org.au "If you peruse this list, you can see the active contesters." said Peter VK8ZZ Are you on the Contest Champion list? https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/contestchampion/ The WIA has offered to get the 2X1 callsigns up and going in a very short period, owing to the existing robust systems in place from when the WIA implemented the exam system. The WIA has a fully functioning online 2x1 Callsign availability checker for use running now. Check for available 2x1 Callsigns: https://wiaawards.com/call2x1/call2x1.php Do you qualify for a 2x1 Contest callsign meeting all the proposed criteria? (currently includes VK and WRTC rankings) Check here: https://wiaawards.com/call2x1/call2x1CR.php 2x1 Callsign recommendation is literally instantaneous, based on the applicant’s qualification by an inbuilt automatic criteria checklist function within the administration process. Once approved, it is envisaged that a Callsign Recommendation form will be automatically completed and downloadable as a PDF for direct emailing to AMC by the applicant for swift processing by ACMA. . The WIA looks forward to working together with the AMC in this matter for the benefit of all Australian Amateur Radio Contest operators.
05.01.2022 Good morning fellow Hams, here is the latest visual adaptation of the VK1WIA Weekly News for your viewing pleasure https://youtu.be/Ge5eidFlHtM It has been almost a year of uploading the videos to YouTube and they sent me through some stats (prior to uploading this latest one) The videos total 1475 minutes, there have been 260 likes, 27 comments, 122 shares of the videos, 4188 new views and 146 subscribers. Once again and big thank you to all of you that have subscribed and ...liked the videos. Now they didn't give me stats on the dislikes, there have been a few along the way, however it would be good to get some constructive feedback from the "dislikers" rather than just anonymously hitting the button. 73, VK5BD See more
