25.01.2022 IS YOUR DOG OVERWEIGHT? DON’T TAKE IT LIGHTLY! Many of us don’t realize that our dog is overweight, because the weight gain is easy to overlook as it often takes place gradually over time. WHY BEING OVERWEIGHT MATTERS... Even if you’ve noticed your dog is carrying a little extra weight, you may not be aware how much it can affect his health. Being as little as 20% overweight can greatly increase the risk of your dog developing serious health conditions such as diabetes mellitus, arthritis, urinary stones or heart disease. Plus, excess weight can not only have a negative impact on your dog’s general wellbeing, happiness and overall quality of life, it can also significantly shorten his life expectancy compared to a healthy-weight pet. All dogs have an ideal weight for their size and breed. Our veterinarians will be able to tell you what this is, and show you how to check that your dog is maintaining a healthy weight. Between check-ups, place your hands on his side - are his ribs hard to feel or even impossible to feel? If so, he is likely overweight. Here are some other signs of obesity you may notice: Loss of an obvious waist Collar needs loosening Difficulty in walking

12.01.2022 While many people believe that bad breath is normal for their furry friends, it can be an indication of a bigger problem. Believe it or not, taking care of your dog’s dental health is just as important as looking after your own. Proper dental care for pets is critical to their overall health and well-being. To help keep your pets teeth gleaming there are many products on the market that can help, but may also indicate they need a clean or extractions. ... If in doubt get our nurses to check it out! We offer free nurse dental checks!

07.01.2022 Does your cat have itchy, scratchy, or dry skin? Ideally your cat’s fur should be clean and fluffy, and feel soft and smooth when you pet her. So if you do discover redness, lumps, flaking or other signs of irritation when you pet her, she may have a skin condition that requires treatment. Look out for an increase in scratching, licking or itching in places she’s favouring more often. If you have concerns, please call us on 4124 4874!

03.01.2022 Paralysis tick season has started. In South East Queensland we do see tick affected animals all year round, however with the warming weather the number of ticks in the environment increases rapidly. Paralysis in mammals is caused by a neurotoxin secreted in the saliva of the paralysis tick as it feeds on the blood of its host. In dogs a change in bark may be the first sign noticed and they may also regurgitate food. As muscles get progressively weaker a wobbly hind limb gait ...and eventually paralysis of all four legs will occur. Cats may become agitated and appear to have difficulty breathing, they will also develop muscle weakness. The muscles responsible for breathing and the heart itself become affected in advanced cases. Tick paralysis progresses quickly and is usually fatal without treatment. Tick paralysis is an easily preventable disease, the products available now are reliable and cost effective. Talk to our friendly staff to find out which product would best suit your needs. If you find a tick on your pet call the clinic 4124 4874 - if you remove the tick please bring it with you for identification.
