14.01.2022 #Autism and #Interoception Interoception awareness is something I’ve recently learned about. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it is considered the ei...ghth sense dealing with the internal state of the body. Research suggests it’s related to a condition many of us autistics also have, alexithymia (difficulty with identifying and describing feelings). Interoception explains so much about my life! It explains how I can easily forget to eat or drink water, I feel pain at a very intense level, or I don’t notice when my heart rate skyrockets. I am glad I am finally learning more about my body so I can take better care of myself. Do you have issues with interoception awareness? If so, how have you learned to improve your awareness? What coping mechanisms have you found useful? -f.au.n Image credit of human body to Tahir Zaman on pngtree.

01.01.2022 It can be really challenging to identify Autism in our young ladies, and often goes undiagnosed or missed, or are late to diagnose. Autism has been historically well identified in boys, but not so much in girls. The presentation between boys and girls can be quite different in some ways, with some of the differences listed below: Social personalities are often described as shy, introverted or being a loner. A lack of desire to interact socially with others, and a lack of a...wareness to be social with others. Will often copy, mimic or mask in social situation. Can often have social scripts that are learnt from TV shows or movies. Can be possessive or very intense with their friendships, with usually one or two close friends. Appears to demonstrate "imaginative play" but it is often one-sided, very controlled and scripted. Will often try to dominate the play and dictate the terms. Special interests can include music, literature, art and animals. Will often hold it all together at school, then have large emotional melt downs at home "in comfort". Can have really great very communication skills.
