15.01.2022 SPRING IS HERE AND SO ARE THE SNAKES In the warmer months, snakes become much more active and pet owners need to be careful and safeguard their pets from snake bites. Dogs will often try to chase or kill snakes resulting in snake bites usually to the dog's face and legs. Cats, being hunters and chasing anything that moves, are also quite susceptible to snake bites. ... The sort of reaction your pet has to a snake bite is determined by a number of factors: the type of snake, the amount of venom injected and the site of the snake bite. Generally the closer the bite is to the heart the quicker the venom spreads to the rest of the body. In addition, at the beginning of summer, snakes' venom glands are fuller and their bites are much more severe. SIGNS OF A SNAKE BITE INCLUDE: Sudden weakness followed by collapse Shaking or twitching of the muscles and difficulty blinking Vomiting Loss of bladder and bowel control Dilated pupils Paralysis Blood in urine If you think your pet has been bitten by a snake you should keep them calm and quiet and take them to a vet immediately. The chances of recovery are much greater if your pet is treated early, with some pets making a recovery within 48 hours. Pets left untreated have a much lower survival rate. SOME TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE FROM SNAKES: Regularly mow the lawn to keep it from getting too long Keep log piles away from the house Clean up any rubbish (it makes for a good hiding place) Keep a look out for shed snake skin Keep dogs on a leash in bush land, particularly around the beaches or water ways

14.01.2022 Ever wonder why your guinea pig is always gnawing on something? Guinea pigs’ teeth are continuously growing. In a healthy guinea pig, the biting, chewing, gnawing, and grinding of food, especially hays, grasses, vegetables and herbs will normally keep their teeth at a healthy length. Dental care can be simple. How do I provide a healthy diet? It is vital that a guinea pigs receive a nutritious diet to aid in keeping those incisors and check teeth (premolars and molars) strong... and healthy. You can help your Guinea Pig keep their teeth healthy by providing them with lots of fresh grass hay (Timothy, Oaten, etc), vegetables including celery, broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach leaves, bok choy and other Asian greens. Guinea pigs are favourable to herbs, some of which include: parsley coriander mint basil dandelion dill It is suggested that you offer your guinea pig a variety of the above each day. Guinea pigs require a dietary source of vitamin C. There may not be adequate levels in vegetables/ herbs thus supplemental vitamin C can be added to their diet. Signs of overgrown teeth If your guinea pig does not have gnaw/ chew adequately, their teeth will become overgrown. Teeth may cut into the gums and cause dental abscesses. Signs that your guinea pig is having tooth problems include lowered appetite and hence stools, mouth sensitivity, redness of the gums, and long teeth. Almost always the cheek teeth are also affected.

02.01.2022 My pet and skin disease Skin disease and disorders are a common problem seen in pets. The condition of your pet’s coat and skin is an important indicator of their overall health. As with allergies or skin reactions in people, these conditions can vary from acute, self-limiting problems to chronic or long-lasting problems requiring life-long treatment.... The many conditions that cause itchy and damaged skin can be grouped into a few categories which have similarities to those seen in humans. These groups include: -Immune related skin disease -Contact allergies -Insect allergies -Airborne allergies -Food allergies -Ear infections -Hormonal diseases that may be non-skin related but show up on the skin such as hypothyroidism (low thyroid disease) or Cushing’s disease If your pets are displaying any signs of irritation and you want to get on top of it, give our friendly team a call on 41244874!

02.01.2022 Paralysis tick season has started. In South East Queensland we do see tick affected animals all year round, however with the warming weather the number of ticks in the environment increases rapidly. Paralysis in mammals is caused by a neurotoxin secreted in the saliva of the paralysis tick as it feeds on the blood of its host. In dogs a change in bark may be the first sign noticed and they may also regurgitate food. As muscles get progressively weaker a wobbly hind limb gait ...and eventually paralysis of all four legs will occur. Cats may become agitated and appear to have difficulty breathing, they will also develop muscle weakness. The muscles responsible for breathing and the heart itself become affected in advanced cases. Tick paralysis progresses quickly and is usually fatal without treatment. Tick paralysis is an easily preventable disease, the products available now are reliable and cost effective. Talk to our friendly staff to find out which product would best suit your needs. If you find a tick on your pet call the clinic 4124 4874 - if you remove the tick please bring it with you for identification.
