01.01.2022 What is meant by the term "green drought"? Simply put, it is enough rain to make the grass green, but not enough to fill water systems both above and below gr...ound. Key signs are that dams are nowhere near full, some gullies and creeks not running during the period of a normal wet season. That is the situation that this area now finds itself in and is a huge concern to all landholders and firefighters. On Thursday 4 Feb a fire started near Hervey Bay that required 25 vehicles to attend. There is an increasing number of small fires cropping up around the whole area. So, the early warning signs are clear - take care with fire, apply for a permit and abide by the permit conditions. Above all, prepare your property now. Interesting fact - green grass can burn, and the hidden danger is the bush. Take a walk and hear the leaves on the ground crunch, see how dry it is under the top layer. Reports from WA (which is similar to experience here) indicate that the current fires started by human activity on blocks that are close to numerous residences. Access to the fire was hampered by insufficient gates, gates that were poorly positioned, or simply not wide enough. Above all, a number of properties were not adequately prepared - excess fuel, no suitable breaks. When these situation occur in difficult or hilly terrain, conditions are prefect for fire escape and escalation. Prepare, Act, Survive.
