25.01.2022 A great infographic summarising some of the common misconceptions surrounding chronic pain management. #exerciseismedicine #physiotherapy #exerciserehabilitation #wihealth #treatthecausenotthesymptom

25.01.2022 It's never too late to make changes to improve your brain health! This week Gordon Lynch explains how exercise can help brain power. https://www.abc.net.au//p/overnights/brain-health/12304436

25.01.2022 This landmark study demonstrated that supervised resistance and high intensity interval training partially counteracted the increase in inflammation during chemotherapy, which resulted in lower fatigue levels. Exercise can therefore be considered an effective treatment to reduce chemotherapy-induced inflammation and subsequent fatigue. 24.01.2022 Despite the fact Physiotherapists are encouraged continue practicing in the face of COVID-19, I feel I can know longer continue running group exercise classes. So its with a very heavy heart that I must announce all group classes are cancelled until further notice. I will be offering discount individual sessions for my regular group attendees. In a one on one environment I feel like a can mitigate risk with robust infection control procedures.... This is a very fluid situation and if Im getting daily advice on best practice from the APA. Im available for free phone support for any of my patients who are feeling overwhelmed with the current crisis! Thinking of you all.

23.01.2022 Safe to say we are fortunate to live in an amazing state where our geographical isolation, social conscience and sound management at a state and federal level have spared us from the horror endured by so many of our overseas neighbours! #waisok #socialdistancing #community #attitudeofgratitude #healthy

23.01.2022 Theres no doubt in my mind that the social benefits of Group Exercise Rehabilitation are as important as the changes in strength and function. Many people living with chronic health conditions become isolated from friends, family and workmates. The friendly banter and sense of identification and connection are an important part of the journey towards an improved quality of life! #exercisetherapy #groupfitness #physiotherapy #exerciseismedicine #mentalhealth #chronicpain #chronicillness #oncologyrehab

22.01.2022 An great article demonstrating that even the Pope occasionally needs the type of intervention that only a Physio can deliver ! When, however, this problem becomes more painful, he normally obtains relief from physiotherapy. A source suggested that he may not have been able to get his regular physiotherapist to treat him at this precise moment given that it is the high holiday season in Rome and strict Covid-19 restrictions are in place #eventhepopeneedsphysio... #devineintervention https://www.americamagazine.org//pope-francis-new-years-sc

22.01.2022 This seminal research demonstrated that increasing levels of cardiovascular exercise are associated with improved sexual satisfaction and reduced erectile dysfunction. The excellent article below gives some easy to follow evidence based ideas to help stay calm and healthy during these difficult times. Some of the more salient points are: 1. Check news and social media sparingly... 2. Exercise regularly 3. Guided meditations morning and night 4. Maintain important social relationships 5. Eat well 6. 20.01.2022 A consequence COVID-19 has been a marked reduction in activity and subsequently function in older people. In this population mobility is key to quality of life, health and independence. Balance and strength, developed through exercise, reduces both the number of falls and their severity in older Australians. Therefore, a primary focus of healthcare providers must be to promote physical activity to restore health in aged care settings! Thankfully Falls & Balance Classes have recommenced at the clinic in Subiaco and at St Ives https://australian.physio//older-australians-risk-life-thr

19.01.2022 Great post from the Australian Physiotherapy Association

19.01.2022 What a mind blowing stat!! Looks like rigorous infection control procedures are here to stay at Western Integrated Health!

18.01.2022 The relationships developed over years and years are what gives my working life meaning and joy! Who wouldnt love working with this scallywag week in and week out for 12 years #exerciseismedicine #coronafit #wihealth #physiotherapy @ North Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia

18.01.2022 This high quality review found that compared with placebo surgery, subacromial decompression surgery for shoulder impingement pain does not provide additional benefits with respect to pain, function or quality of life. Additionally as with all surgery its expensive, invasive and associated with a small risk of complications. Patients should complete a minimum 12 week targeted exercise rehabilitation program before considering more invasive options. https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/11/665

17.01.2022 Australian Physiotherapy Association Did you know that the health of males in most countries, including Australia, is generally poorer than that of females? Despite this, men are less likely to seek medical attention. Physiotherapists treat everything from musculoskeletal injuries to diabetes, heart disease and problems with the pelvic floor muscles - yes, men have them too! This #menshealthweek do yourself a favour and get a check up. #choosephysio #menshealth

16.01.2022 The key point here from the British Journal of Sports Medicine is that changing from heel striking to mid/forefoot running does not improve performance or reduce injury risk!! However, a targeted strength program will tick both boxes

16.01.2022 What you need to know 1. Pregabalin and gabapentin can be effective as first line treatment for some people with neuropathic pain such as post-herpetic neuralgia and diabetic peripheral neuropathy 2. THEY ARE NOT EFFECTIVE for low back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis, or episodic migraine, and their off-label use for these conditions is not advised... https://www.bmj.com/content/369/bmj.m1315

16.01.2022 Key points from the 2020 WHO guidelines for physical activity requirements across the lifespan: 1. Children and Adolescents require 60min/day of moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise in order to develop and maintain a healthy mind and body! 2. Adults require 150-300 min of moderate intensity activity or 75-150 min or vigorous exercise per week in order to maintain health... 3. All age groups should complete strengthening exercises 2-3 times/week Pretty sobering concepts to consider as a parent and health professional. https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/24/1451

15.01.2022 This inactive and overweight (BMI 33) gentleman in his mid 60s presented mid February to his GP with insidious onset knee pain and swelling. An MRI was ordered which showed a meniscus tear and age related degenerative change of the weight bearing portion of his knee. He was promptly booked for an arthroscope in March without being offered any other advice or treatment options. Fortunately for him elective surgeries were suspended shortly afterwards and he sort Physiotherapy ...treatment for short term symptomatic relief. To his intitial disappointment treatment consisted of education and daily cycling for 30 minutes combined with sit to stands, bridges and calf raises. 4 weeks later and with 3 Physio treatments in total hes 12kg lighter and has absolutely no knee pain. Treatment Option 1: expensive ($45000) invasive, requires general anaesthetic, a risk of complications/infection and associated with a period of immobility, strong medications and decline in general health. Treatment Option 2: total cost $322.50, effective, non invasive and associated with an improved general health profile and mood state. Surely conservative management should be trialled before more expensive and invasive treatments are considered #exerciseismedicine http://theconversation.com/hospitals-have-stopped-unnecessa

15.01.2022 COVID-19, Resilience & Leadership Theres no doubt its a crazy and unpredictable time in the world right now. Its easy to feel like our worlds are spinning out of control as we fear for the physical, emotional and financial wellbeing of ourselves and everyone we care about. To prevent feeling overwhelmed and panicking its important to take stock of all the wonderful things we have in our life, and all the variables that we can still control to ensure we stay healthy and ca...lm. After all, its times like these when our family, friends and community in general need us to step up and show leadership by setting an example for how to best conduct ourselves in the midst of a global crisis. Some measured steps Ive taken today to maintain my physical and mental health have been: 1. Made time to exercise (and stopped midway through my run to enjoy the sunrise) 2. Replaced my second coffee with a guided meditation 3. Wrote a gratitude list to give some context of all the fantastic things I still enjoy on a daily basis including my own personal good health and that of my family, a job I love and a supportive network of friends and other health professionals. 4. Made time for a big cuddle with every member of the family. Id love to hear from others as to how they are planning to take care of themselves in the coming weeks! Furthermore if any of the Western Integrated Health community are feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start with a self care plan Im available for no-cost phone support! Take care everyone and be kind to yourselves and others. Looking forward to a busy day at work which includes an outdoor group on Jacobs Ladder! #blessedbeyondmeasure

15.01.2022 60% of YouTube channels discussing lower back pain are promoting erroneous and potentially harmful information..... and no doubt you could extrapolate those findings to pretty much any topic you choose to investigate!

13.01.2022 Prehabilitation involves strategies to improve patients health in anticipation of an upcoming physiological stressor. This is particularly relevant at the moment with the strategies in place slow the spread of COVID-19 having the unfortunate effect of reducing cardiopulmonary function of those most vunerable to infection. Strategies to improve the physical fitness of those most at risk in the community at the moment will be crucial to reducing the impact of COVID-19 with rega...rds to mortality and morbidity. Im available for free phone consults for any of my patients who are looking maintain their health whilst practicing social distancing. In the clinic our infection control practices are first rate. All patients are have their temperature taken with an infrared thermometer prior to entering, use hand sanitizers and each surface and piece of exercise equipment is sprayed with surgical ethanol after every use. https://blogs.bmj.com//julie-k-silver-prehabilitation-cou/

13.01.2022 Good afternoon everyone. I just wanted to express my appreciation for the manner in which everyone has embraced the COVID-19 infection control practices we have put in place in the clinic this week. As you can see from below these strategies are designed to keep all of us safe and to prevent our healthcare system from being overwhelmed by a sudden influx of new cases. ... I am confident that Western Integrated Health has adopted every measure possible to keep our patients safe. Every surface is disinfected after every use. That includes bikes, reformers, dumbbells, bench tops and treatment tables. Hand sanitizer use is compulsory pre and post treatment. COVID-19 is a significant public health issue but if we take care of ourselves and each other we can minimise the impact on ourselves and the community in general. The APA and Dept of Health are working closely with all Physios to ensure we are kept up to date with safe practices. Stay safe, dont panic and keep healthy! Please feel free to contact me directly with any COVID-19 concerns. [email protected] https://www.vox.com//coronavirus-us-cases-quarantine-cance

11.01.2022 Theres no doubt many in Perth and the worldwide community are reeling from the effect COVID-19 is having on our lives. The British Journal of Sports Medicine has published the following article highlighting the important role exercise plays in maintaining a healthy immune system and tips on how to exercise safely. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of a person contracting a communicable diseases (such as viral and bacterial infections) by enhancing the persons immu...ne systems ability to regulate itself. Therefore, we should maintain our exercise regimes during this period, because it improves our immune systems competency Their suggestions for minimising infection risk whilst exercising are as follows. 1. Exercise in a well ventilated area 2. Wipe down surfaces before and after using machinery 3. Keep your hands to yourself 4. Avoid touching your face 5. Use your own personal water bottle 6. Use a towel to cover equipment while you use it. Happily I can say Western Integrated Health follows all these guidelines. We have hospital grade cleaning products and Im very confident our infection control polices are first rate. We can also offer Skype consults to ensure patients can maintain their health during periods of isolation/quarantine. http://ow.ly/Op5K50yNAhQ

09.01.2022 Did you know that up to 40% of over 40 year olds have radiographic evidence of knee osteoarthritis without any pain or limitation! The correlation between radiology findings and patients symptoms is quite low, therefore decisions to operate should be made after targeted rehabilitation has been trialled and failed and based on pain and function rather than imaging reports. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29886437/

09.01.2022 The mental health discussion is more important than it has ever been with everything going on around us in today's society. 06.01.2022 Great blog from the prestigious BJSM extolling the virtues of exercise rehabilitation for knee arthritis when compared to any other intervention! Knee arthroscopy, cortisone injections, opiates, NSAIDs and advice to rest because of degenerative findings seen on imaging have really created a management disaster for the condition of knee OA. the only way we can turn this ship around (other than come up with therapeutics that actually help not harm) is to ditch all of the h...armful management options in favour of moderate exercise regimes. https://blogs.bmj.com/bjsm/?p=9619

06.01.2022 Excellent review from the great Jeremy Lewis demonstrating the multifactorial nature of musculoskeletal pain and the importance of addressing lifestyle factors as part of comprehensive treatment! #treatthecausenotthesymptom #exerciserehabilitation

03.01.2022 It was wonderful to see the stress melt away from the faces of the amazing staff at Mount Street Breakfast Bar during an hour of exercise and humour yesterday in Kings Park. I reduced the intensity of the session by 50% today as high intensity exercise can become just another stressor for an already overwrought nervous system! Importantly this allows more time for social connection and laughter. Its so important we continue to make time to look after our mental and physical health during these most challenging of times! #exerciseismedicine #mentalhealth #laughteristhebestmedicine #groupexercise #socialdistancing
