22.01.2022 This week we are celebrating NAIDOC WEEK "Always was, always will be" NAIDOC week is a week in which we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. For Wilco this is the perfect week to celebrate the achievements and journeys of our apprentices. We asked our apprentices what their journey with Wilco has meant for them and we are honoured to share their personal reflections with you this week. ... First cab off the rank is Jasmine a proud Yawuru and Bardi-Jawi woman that started with Wilco earlier this year. We love the energy and humour that Jasmine brings to the team. She has shown herself to be a leader and is a credit to herself and her Mob. Meet JASMINE "My name is Jasmine Bin Omar, I am a proud Yawuru and Bardi-Jawi woman from Broome and a 2nd year electrical apprentice. In January 2020 I had the opportunity to continue my trade with Wilco Electrical. Working for Wilco has been really great, because you get to work in a lot of diverse areas. For instance, when I first started, I worked on the Smart Freeway for 6 months doing both night and day shifts. We pulled cables for lights and worked on the big gantry’s. Then I moved to doing fit outs and renovations at the St John of God hospital in Subiaco, and after that an office fit out on St Georges Terrace. Now I am currently doing FIFO to South Hedland, working on a refurbishment for one of FMG’s camp sites. It is a lot of hard work and really hot, but it is very rewarding because I get to learn to do a lot of new things that I wouldn’t learn working in Perth. I am definitely really keen to keep pushing through my last couple years as an apprentice and to continue to learn from all the great tradies I get to work with here at Wilco" #naidocweek #naidoc2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #20by2020 #aboriginalbusiness #perthelectricians

Joining the Wilco team this summer was Nyoongar Ballardong man Hayden Yarran, Wangkathaa (Wongai) man Shannon Nelson and our tenth apprentice, Yawuru woman Jasmin Bin Omar. On behalf of Wilco and the apprentices, thank you to everyone who has contributed along the way. From donating/lending tools to those in need through to support when times where tough. 19.01.2022 Today we celebrate Wilco’s Project Manager, Jason Dear! Since November 2019 Jason has managed 27 employees and over 5000 labour hours on the SmartWays Alliance Kwinana Freeway widening Project and has done a brilliant job. This Alliance project made up of Main Roads Western Australia BMD Group, Ventia and Arup Group, created electrical apprenticeship opportunities for three new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within our business, who were able to join our ta...lented senior apprentices, providing them with valuable experience in working on such a large scale project. The safety of our employees is always our number one focus on our projects and, nearing completion of this challenging and complicated scope, we are proud of Jason and his team delivering it without a single incident or near miss. Congratulations Jase, and thank you to all our team for representing Wilco so positively out in the field, we have received plenty of great feedback from our client. 14.01.2022 October 2020 marks five years since Frank and Tim took over this business and Wilco Electrical as we know it now, was born. We are humbled to acknowledge this moment in time and reflect on all those who have contributed to our journey. Our journey, that started with our 20 by 2020 goal and has become so much greater as we strive to find new ways to promote social responsibility and sustainability. Within four years, with Tim and Frank at the helm, Wilco was awarded Electrical... Contractor of the year (State), runner up (National) and Energy Efficient Project of the year (State) by Master Electricians Australia, as well as a Business News Award. These experiences remind us of how important it is to take a moment to reflect on our progress. The end of this year will mark a milestone that we are very excited to announce (soon!). For now, we would like to take a moment to appreciate all those who have contributed to our achievements. A business is nothing if not busy and you have kept us on our toes! To our clients, our team and extended family at Wilco Electrical thank you. We simply would not be where we are today without you. #teamworkmakesdreamwork #aboriginalbusiness #aboroginalaustralia #supportsmallbusiness #perthelectricians #perthbusiness #perthbusinessnetwork

13.01.2022 Celebrating NAIDOC week As NAIDOC week draws to a close we are super excited to be announcing our newest addition to the team, and our 11th Aboriginal Apprentice, Meet BRETT... Brett is a proud Mirriwoong Juru man from East Kimberly. Brett has relocated to Perth from Kununurra and is looking forward to commencing his apprenticeship with Wilco. The smiles say it all!! The Wilco team are very proud to have been able to offer employment opportunities to 11 amazing people since setting the ambitious goal to create 20 Aboriginal Apprenticeships by 2020 a short couple of years ago, and while the end of 2020 looms, we will continue to strive in the pursuit of our goal to create opportunities for Aboriginal people to achieve their ambitions of becoming qualified Electricians through 2021 and beyond. It is a joy to see these young people grow day by day in their confidence and ability over the course of their apprenticeships. On behalf of the Wilco Team, we would like to offer heartfelt thanks to our clients, friends and supporters, without your ongoing support we wouldn’t be in a position to keep supporting people like Brett in the pursuit of their aspirations. 09.01.2022 For the past couple of months Wilco have been on a journey with FISH - Foundation for Indigenous Sustainable Health (FISH), joining them over four half day Personal Development sessions which were specifically tailored to provide head, heart and spirit knowledge of Australia’s Aboriginal history and an insight into the worlds longest continuous culture. Our final PD was held on Bindjareb Boodjar and was an important session connecting us to and walking the country with the... original custodians of the land. We were honoured to learn about local historical events, the six seasons and what occurs in each including what food was available from the local flora and fauna. We learned of the historical reserves and our hearts were heavy as we walked and relived the massacre of the Bindjareb Noongar people in what today is known as Pinjarra. Enlightened to the history and empowered by the knowledge we have gained from this PD, we are looking forward to continuing our work with FISH in a movement to bring about change into our future. 07.01.2022 LANGUAGE Thanks to the ABC News and minister for aboriginal affairs Ken Wyatt for this podcast, touching on the demise of the indigenous language. Many of Wilco’s apprentices and aboriginal people in general, not living on country don’t have the opportunity to be bought up learning the language of their ancestors, yet are taught French or Italian in the contemporary school system. Let’s all support the teaching of the indigenous language of the land on which our schools stand as a way of joining, inclusion and unity.. it can only increase understanding and acceptance.

03.01.2022 As part of Wilco’s commitment in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by providing employment pathways, we are currently hosting two Aboriginal students in the INSTEP work experience program. This allows the students to undertake workplace learning to gain employability skills and open pathways by experiencing real work environment. Today Wilco Director, Frank Mitchell caught up with Kalani on site for a yarn and check how he is finding his experience with... Wilco. Kalani is a Punuba Djaru man (Fitzroy Crossing/ Halls Creek) but his family now reside in Cowaramup. He loves his footy and is currently playing for East Perth Colts. We are confident Kalani’s experience with Wilco tradesman Rob Taylor, has helped him understand a little more as to what an electrical apprenticeship entails. Thank you to Chris Coslani, Liam Mulane and the greater team at Christ Church Grammar School for your ongoing support in engaging Wilco for all your Electrical Services. It’s this support that makes it possible for us to provide these opportunities. #20by2020 #instepwest #creatingpathways #Aboriginalelectricalcontractor Frank Mitchell Tim Bidstrup

01.01.2022 Celebrating NAIDOC Week Introducing our longest standing Apprentice, Sam Vale whom joined the team in 2017 and will be completing his Capstone early next year. He is extremely efficient, dedicated and a valuable asset to the team. We look forward to seeing Sam continue to thrive with Wilco in years to come. ... Meet SAM "My name is Samuel Vale and I’m a Wadjuk Noongar and direct descendant of the traditional land owners around the Swan River and Perth area. After years in the FIFO construction industry, I was lucky enough to be taken on by Wilco as a mature age apprentice in 2017. I was given an opportunity to complete an electrical trade through Wilco’s 20 by 2020 initiative, which is a decision I haven’t looked back on. I am currently in the last stages of my apprenticeship and am looking forward to being signed off as a qualified electrician in the new year. Wilco has given me the opportunity to work in extremely diverse areas of the electrical trade, from residential housing projects, to commercial office fit-outs as well as industrial applications that involve more complex thinking and problem solving. The diversity I have experienced working with Wilco, has given me the confidence to complete my trade with the knowledge that I will be able to work my way through any complex issues that may arise throughout my career as an electrician. As a young Aboriginal man, I feel comforted knowing that there are companies out there like Wilco that are willing to support and give young Aboriginal people a fair go, without the judgement or assumptions that I know and have experienced first hand, comes with many other employers in the industry. I know that I will always have the support and understanding of the team at Wilco" #naidocweek #naidoc2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #20by2020 #aboriginalbusiness #perthelectricians
