22.01.2022 Max Powers the Red-bellied black snake Last Wednesday, one of our experienced reptile rescuers Liz, attended to this Red-bellied black snake who had his head caught in an empty soft drink can. Fortunately for this lucky snake (named Max Powers), Kooralbyn resident Jim spotted the snake in his bush paddock. We don't know how far Max travelled like that and for how long, but he was very lucky that Jim spotted him. Jim’s wife Gwen phoned Wildcare rescuer Liz to attend. ... After some assistance also by a local snake wrangler, the snake’s head was extracted from the can. Upon assessing his condition, Liz contacted Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation whom deployed the new WIRES rescue vehicle to transfer Max swiftly to the hospital for veterinary treatment. The incredible Dr Camille undertook surgery to the constriction injuries Max had sustained. After surgery and rest, Max was released back home safe and well by rescuer Liz along with fellow wildlife rescuer Chris and the amazing snake wrangler who assisted in freeing Max. Thank you to everyone involved in helping Max. He is one very lucky snake! Did You Know: This species is not aggressive and will usually retreat before attacking, although when it is threatened it will raise its body from the ground flatten its neck, hiss and perform a series of strikes. There have been no recorded human deaths as a result of a Red-bellied Black Snake bite to date in Australia. (info obtained from Wildlife Victoria) Please be sure to never approach or handle venomous snakes. If you see one that may be sick or injured, always call your local wildlife rescue group to assist in sending an experienced and licensed handler.

15.01.2022 A timely Tawny Tale Not quite ready for flying practice, Teddy the pre-fledgling Tawny Frogmouth fell out of the nest and found himself grounded in a backyard near Canungra. Luckily he was spied by a kind resident who called Wildcare for help. On arrival, rescuers Bren and Tara checked the trees above to see if they could see the nest. ... Sure enough, they found Mum sitting next to a flimsy nest in a spot that was just too high to reach, even with a ladder. Realising a makeshift nest was needed, Tara created one using a hanging plant pot filled with some leaf litter and a stick as a perch. Little Teddy was placed gently into his new nest and Tara put it in a nearby tree, all the while watched over by Mum. The resident kept watch on the new nest and reported that Mum came down to feed Teddy at dusk, and she is staying close. Teddy will soon be able to fly and move off with his mum. This is the best possible outcome in this situation, so if you find a baby bird and need advice, please call Wildcare's 24-hour hotline on 5527 2444.

13.01.2022 Look at those faces!! Wonderful news with the reunion of this Tawny Frogmouth family after a wild hailstorm swept the two youngsters from a tree at Tamborine. Resident Andrew found the adorable pre-fledglings soaked and sorry after their ordeal, but fortunately not injured.... Wondering what he should do, Andrew rang Wildcare for advice. Volunteers Hadas and Sherryn guided him through the process of creating a new nest from a feed bucket and placing it back in the tree in the hopes of an evening reunion with Mum. Andrew was delighted to report that Mum turned up and is tending to her youngsters. He has since upgraded their new digs with an even bigger nest known as The Sheraton. They sure look comfortable. Thanks so much to Andrew and his willingness to make this a happy outcome. Tawny Frogmouth nestlings, pre-fledglings and fledglings are out and about now, so please call Wildcare on 5527 2444 if you find one that needs help. photo credit: Andrew Muller

09.01.2022 RESCUE MISSION POSSIBLE!! A seemingly impossible bird rescue became possible for Wildcare thanks to the skills of Tamborine arborist TravandMel McNaught Trav kindly came to the aid of a distressed juvenile Corella that had one of its wings caught in a branch more than 20 metres off the ground. ... Wildcare rescuer Sherryn called on Trav the Tree Climber for help after the firies were unable to gain access to the Tamborine Mountain property. With the young bird dangling helplessly and its concerned parents hovering nearby, Trav swiftly made his ascent and freed the injured youngster and brought it down for assessment. Aside from the expected wing damage, Sherryn also found an infected wound on the bird's face, which may have contributed to its weakness and inability to free itself. The young Corella is now receiving expert treatment at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation. The property owner reports that the parents have been visiting the tree twice a day looking for their youngster so we hope they will be reunited soon. We are so grateful to Trav the Tree Climber for making this rescue mission possible.

05.01.2022 Koalas are doing it tough. Habitat is being lost at an alarming rate and koala numbers are plummeting. Remaining koalas are left to face ongoing and significant threats such as cars, dogs and stress-induced disease. This further threatens their survival and in many areas local populations are already disappearing. Our national icon deserves better. The koala emergency requires emergency measures. Please join us in signing and sharing this petition. Join IFAW in calling on the Government to take emergency action to protect koalas and their habitat.

02.01.2022 We’d like to offer a tremendous thank you to the Fire and Rescue Service in Southport who assisted a magpie entangled high in a tree. It is likely that she was there for some days before her eventual rescue. Once again this illustrates the importance of properly disposing of rubbish, however small. Too often birds become trapped and entangled in our discarded trash. In this case the culprit was some discarded string. ... If you do see wildlife that is in in danger, sick or injured, please call Wildcare or your local wildlife rescue group. Wildcare’s 24-hour hotline is 5527 2444.
