17.01.2022 I spoke to a mature friend of mine in England recently, seeking advice for my men's retreats. He was very supportive and offered some choice insights. After chatting for a while, as if he just remembered, he told me about two of his friends who both committed suicide last year. What he told me gave me shivers.... Both men were 'established', one in his 40's and the other in his 50's. Both had families, still married with children. Both had comfortable careers, one with a business that did very well. Everything looked good from the outside. My friend told me he had a regular appointment with one of them, catching up and sharing recent news once a month. Never did he mention any thoughts to take his own life, nor even give any signs of distress. Men are experts at hiding their inner turmoil. The shocking truth is what they left behind... Their kids will grow up without a father, but worse than that, they'll always wonder what could have been so wrong that lead their dad to end it all. On top of being left with all the pressures of managing the family, their wives will wonder if they could have done something, anything.. if they could have read the signs better. What could possibly inspire someone to make such a finite decision? Is it a lack of connection? Is it the inability to speak out? Is it the pressures of life? Is it getting to a certain point and wondering: "is this it?" There is so much to live for. Opportunities around every corner. Chances for growth, problems to solve, struggles to overcome... it's all a matter of perspective. Sometimes it can feel tough, but these times are temporary. Taking the time to view a problem with a fresh outlook or talking to someone about it to get an outsider's opinion can be the difference between life and death. There are a few philosophies that can help in times of need too, particularly Stoic philosophy and Buddhist philosophy. "This too shall pass," said the Buddha 2,500 years ago. I'll share a couple of resources in the coming days from these disciplines that are very helpful in offering insight. You can also go on your own journey of discovery by searching Buddhist teachings or Stoic philosophy. Together we can decrease these statistics. Together we can help our Fathers, Brothers, Husbands, mates. Together we can erase the stigma that men can't talk about their problems. So let's do it.
