23.01.2022 As 2020 comes to an end, and we handover the WILDFIRE roles to the new 2021 committee, we would just like to say an enormous thank you to our Committee. 2020 really thew some curve balls in everyone’s way, but despite this, you were all able to pull together and make this year the success for WILDFIRE that it was. This year we created many new initiatives and events which required a lot of organisation and creativity from you all, and with everyone doing their bit, you real...ly made our job easy. We are so extremely proud of everyone’s contributions and couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated group to work with. So, thank you to: - Caroline Xue, our Secretary; - Molly Cargill, our Treasurer; - Belle King, our Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Representative; - Keisha Nash, our Junior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Representative; - Andy Downie, our Promotions Officer; - Emma Buckthorpe, our Publications Officer; - Ayushica Saran, our Sponsorship Rep; - Claire Thomas, our Events Coordinator; - Rachel Cole, our Year A Rep; - Sophie Conroy, our Allied Health Rep and Peninsula Subcommittee Chair; - Caitlin Smart, our Liaison Officer; - Meghan Taylor, our IT Officer; - Isobella Kruger and Samantha Congdon, our Clayton Subcommittee Chairs; - Seamus Heanue, our Bendigo Subcommittee Chair; - Elly Thomas, our Mildura Subcommittee Chair; - Nick Woodland, our Gippsland Subcommittee Chair; and, - Leon Polychronopoulos, our Parkville Subcommittee Chair. Thank you to each and every one of you, we wish we could have had our final meeting in person like previous years but a zoom meeting and zoom photo will have to do. WILDFIRE has been an especially important part of both of our university lives, and although it is sad to leave this part of us behind, we are so excited for what the 2021 Committee will bring to WILDFIRE and we look forward to seeing the many incredible things you do for the students. Thank you so much to our committee. Love from your Co-Presidents, Ash and Kelly

11.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK The week has come to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples! Originally, standing for National Aborigines* and Islanders Day Observance Committee, NAIDOC dates back to the 1920s when Aboriginal rights groups were advocating for a boycott of Australia Day, raising awareness of the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.... This year’s theme is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the ongoing custodians of the land we are so lucky to live on. The theme is also a reminder of the rich history of exploration, creativity and scientific discoveries achieved by First Nation’s People over the 65,000+ years that they have cared for the country. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. - NAIDOC.org There are plenty of ways you can celebrate the week. Some highlights that you might want to look out for are: - ABC Radio Melbourne NAIDOC Week Music Celebration A music special for NAIDOC Week on Tuesday, 10 November. Live radio broadcast 2-3pm, then streamed on the ABC Melbourne Facebook and YouTube from 8-9pm. www.naidoc.org.au//always-was-always-will-be-abc-melbourne -Virtual Indigenous Film Festival Five First Nations-focused films (Nov 11-15) www.naidoc.org.au//naidoc/virtual-indigenous-film-festival -Dance Rites The sixth annual dance-off festival broadcast from the Sydney Opera House www.sydneyoperahouse.com/festivals/dance-rites.html - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Science and Innovation (Casey Cardinia Libraries zoom event) Learn about fire stick farming, fish traps and weirs (aquaculture), and weaving, rope and nets from Gamilaraay woman, Brownwyn Cochrane. www.naidoc.org.au//aboriginal-and-torres-strait-islander-s - NAIDOC week at the NGV Online activities for children and families https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/pro/naidoc-week-2019-at-the-ngv/ The NAIDOC week website features more detail about the history of NAIDOC week, and an exhaustive events list: www.naidoc.org.au/ This is a week for all Australians to enjoy and take part in! You are encouraged to celebrate, reflect upon and learn about the long history of Australia’s First Nation’s people. Below is the 2020 National NAIDOC Poster. *'Aborigines' is largely considered an outdated, derogatory term. It is recommended that the term not be used.

02.01.2022 Reflections on Rural Health in 2020 Monash Rural Health is inviting all students to share their reflections on the ups and downs of this eventful year. Find the link here, and more of a description below: https://forms.gle/nYmZRUjkUh13p7We6... This resilience and the new knowledge and skills associated with 2020 are important to share with each other as a form of recognition and strength building, a means to communicate how events have been dealt with and overcome and as a way of recording our part in a year that will undoubtedly influence history for years to come. Monash Rural Health would like to invite you to share your stories, good, bad and otherwise. Share them in whatever format suits your style, remembering that this is a story, not a report. Contributions will be collated for inclusion in an anthology of reflections on the year that was 2020. Format examples: - a creative writing piece - poetry - visual art - drawing, cartoon, photography... - a photographic essay. The important thing is that the year is recorded, remembered and entered into our history. (Thanks to Callum Nguyen for the pic!)
