22.01.2022 When we come together for Wild Ground Bush School, were co-creating a space that feels safe, fun and full of learning. Were learning to understand what that means in terms of needs in ourselves and others. Were practising being team members. Were finding our that the concept of fun can look different for each of us. Were building friendships. Were celebrating our different strengths and abilities. Were learning how to share space with other animals and friends. Were practising conflict resolution. Were learning what it means to be humans in community. #bushschool #forestschool #pdhpe #healthandwellbeing #friendship #conflictresolution #outdoorlearning #outdooreducation #community

17.01.2022 And were back in action! Join us for some much-needed connection through nature, creativity and play. More info here: wildground.com.au... Our 8-week nature play program is a child-led adventure allowing children to immerse in free play. We will explore, create, build, wander, use real tools, enjoy risky play, cook on the campfire and get messy. Our Monday session is sold out, but weve got some spots available on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays this coming term. See you around the campfire!

17.01.2022 Yes! Listening, supporting and connecting when our children experience big emotions. Empathy builds strong, resilient and emotionally intelligent children. Its ok to soothe.

17.01.2022 STEM in nature. Bush School children loved our new #sticklets this week. This week we provided them as an open ended resource to observe what the children would do with them. We find giving space to childrens ideas and trusting that they will lean deeper into curiosity, problem solving and inquiry provides solid learning. And more that that, this week they really demonstrated the idea that invention is the mother of necessity. One child raced off to invent a set of tongs a...s soon as she realised her banana was close to being cooked on the campfire, while other children designed and created shields to protect themselves from the magic sword that was being wielded at them by another inventor. Yet another child created a magic sword to rescue a lost potion cup from the creek. Other children stretched their art making ideas and a scarecrow. Another made a rainbow marshmallow stick. Children discovered they needed finger strength to stretch and bend the silicone. The activity proved to be another fun and creative way to build those finger muscles for writing in our nature journals! #stem #stemeducation #bushschool #ourdoorlearning #forestschool #australiancurriculum #stage1nsw #natureplay #playoutside #outdooreducation #outdoormaths #primaryeducation #wildground #curriculumalignedprogram @hellosticklets @ Lawson, New South Wales

14.01.2022 Hey Peacekeepers, Today - Monday August 24 - is the last day to make a submission to National Parks regarding the amendment to the management plan and the Govet...ts Leap overhaul, and we need your help! Were all for upgrading the Leap to make it more accessible (this seems to be the stated aim of the plan) but the current draft plan, if it gets the rubber stamp, would obliterate the character of Govetts Leap - with the valley below you and trees around you, right now you can feel held by the bush. This is why its such a special lookout. We get to look out on the natural world while we are held in the natural world. This matters to us. It supports our mental health and it nurtures our community. The damage this plan would wreak on the flora and fauna of the Park is more concerning. The current draft plan would take out a decent chunk of the bush within the loop road - why would we do that to native species that desperately need habitat after the Black Summer fires destroyed 80% of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area? Even worse, the current draft plan would create conditions that would threaten to wipe out more than half the remaining population of the 200 or so Fletchers Drumsticks plants, which grow on the hanging swamp on the cliff face below Govetts Leap. The paving and concrete championed in the current draft precinct plan would have a shocking impact on the vegetation, especially isopogon fletcheri. These plants are as ancient as the Wollemi Pine, and they only grow in the Grose Valley! According to information on the NSW Office of environment and heritage website, this species requires site-based management in order to secure it from extinction in NSW for 100 years. National Parks and Wildlife made the Fletchers Drumsticks a key species in their #SaveOurSpecies campaign!! Its hard to understand why NPWS would risk destroying more than half the remaining specimens of this species in the wild, by building a huge concrete and paved platform above them that would create alkaline runoff over the escarpment, endangering this vulnerable ecological community. It seems like a plan that has been made with no regard for conservation of World Heritage or the mission of the National Parks movement. If you feel like we do - if you want to upgrade Govetts Leap lookout and improve access for people with mobility challenges while also protecting the biodiversity of our National Park and preserving the character of Blackheath Village - youve only got today to make your best and fairest, reasoned and passionate arguments. Make a cuppa, and head to this URL, where you can submit your concerns online in about 10-15 minutes if you keep it pithy and bullet-pointy. And please forward this on to other people who love the Leap and want to protect rare native species and habitat. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//blue-mountains-nationa

14.01.2022 There was sooooo much rain today at Bush Playgroup. It was a first for some spending a large chunk of time in the mud and rain... but with good rain gear and a thirst for puddle jumping it can be fun and exhilarating. We added hoops for good measure too #bushplaygroup #playoutside #natureplay #forestschool

12.01.2022 Bush school adventures ahoy! So refreshing and therapeutic to revisit this space again! We heard kingfishers, retold our Bushfire Recovery story about Kiki and Kaka the rescued kingfishers and wondered if that was them singing and crying out to us. We laughed and crafted and sang and shared more stories. We were present together in the moment observing the life stage of plants around us, spying animals hidden in the shadows of the trees and water. ... We practised independence, perseverance and responsibility for ourselves and our belongings. We felted and crotcheted, making birds to their like-ness, gifting them to friends moving away. We discussed, negotiated and risk-assessed the area to create a yes space where we could feel safe to explore and play. And we played and played and played some more. We’re meeting fortnightly at the moment. Perhaps your primary-aged child would like to join us? We have a couple of spaces opening up...

12.01.2022 We live in an era of adult intervention. The prevailing idea of parenting or teaching or babysitting is that we must constantly be guiding or teaching or correcting, that sitting and watching is laziness, that if we arent constantly enriching the childrens world we are neglecting them. This lies at the heart of much of the stress and guilt parents are feeling, especially during these days of pandemic when the children are home and their parents are torn between paying the bills, keeping the house, and instructing the kids.

11.01.2022 I get such a pang of childhood nostalgia every time I hear a child yell: there’s a tadpole! I caught one. #childhoodmemories #natureplay #tadpoles #bushplaygroup #bushschool #forestschool

05.01.2022 Risky play is a core aspect of our bush playgroup and bush school programs. Allowing children time and space to assess their own risks supports their cognitive, emotional and physical development. Weve had a big focus on tinder nests and fairy fires this term alongside our campfire cooking program. Children practise patience, persistence and dedication to master these skills. And continue fine tuning them as they grow. #bushschool #forestschool #natureplay #riskyplay #riskassessment

01.01.2022 Trusting and holding space for curious minds to dive deep into authentic inquiry, problem solving and deep learning. We never quite know how the day will unfold. Connecting to the curriculum beyond a basic outline is a gathering of threads post program. Co-Planning our days schedule with the children yesterday saw them asking to go down to the creek after circle time and nature games. I want to test the direction of the water, said one child, who had brought her own scie...nce kit to show her friends. Me too, said others. So off we set with our Wild Ground explorer bags. Children spontaneously started asking questions about what they observed: I wonder whats in the water Ive collected? I wonder if I put clay in here if I will still see through? Is there anything alive in here? Can I drink this water? How do I know? Is the water cleaner above the rocks? I wonder if I can find ochre rocks around here? Our job as teachers is to hold the space for these questions. To slowly introduce scientific and mathematical language through authentic conversation. Providing resources and opportunities to hypothesise, experiment and test their wonderings. Theyre engaged with the space and ready over the next few months to find answers to these questions themselves with our support and guidance. Learning outdoors is fun! Especially when its child led! #bushschool #forestschool #democratic learning #stage1nsw #australiancurriculum #outdoorlearning #curriculumaligned #outdooreducation #getoutside #playbasedlearning @ Lawson, New South Wales
