24.01.2022 This was an image I created during lockdown earlier this year. I remember this day so well. Bella was feeling out of sorts & the weight of what was going on in the world at that time ~ was heavy for her. She was 7 years old ... and struggling to comprehend life. Why we had to stay at home, why she couldn't go to school, why she couldn't see her teachers and her friends, why couldn't she go to swimming lessons, why couldn't we go to the shops, why we couldn't see our family ...... "I don't get it Mum". All she knew was we were all trying to stay safe for ourselves and our loved ones .... but the explanation fell short and didn't seem to help her Life is strange at times for the best of us - but for our children ... understandably, their reality can be light years from ours and sometimes, it's hard to know what goes on inside their little heads or how to make things seem right. On this day, I disappeared into the studio for a play .... and she followed soon behind me.... seeking refuge from her little brother who was driving her bonkers - and some Mummy-daughter conversation. She walked out briefly with no explanation, before walking back in with a new dress on and asked me to take her photo. I set up a different style of lighting for this one .... and this is what she gave me. Such a dramatic portrait of my daughter - during a very strange time indeed. Not long later, our kitten Gypsy meandered in and nek minute, was getting a photograph with Bella .... with Belle's beaming from ear to ear (pic in comments). This was my first real attempt at a dramatic fine art portrait - and while it didn't rate a score in recent photography award submissions, the story, the image and the memory, are worth far more too me than any accolade.
