15.01.2022 We will be releasing 2000 hatchling turtles to evaluate head starting as a management tool to mitigate fox predation on Murray River turtles. We are collaborating with a turtle farmer in SA. Our eggs will be hatching in 2 weeks. The photos here show the turtle ponds and eggs incubating. Notice what looks like pebbles on the water surface. These are actually short neck turtle heads... Amazing numbers.

14.01.2022 There will be a big launch of WomSAT next month. A Citizen Science tool to map wombat mortality and mange- pigging backing on the success of TurtleSAT. Today, I also created CatSAT. There are two aspects to CatSAT and both relate to assessing the impact and behaviour of domestic cats. The CatPrez survey, allows people to easily record those little lizard, bird or mammal (anything really) presentsthat fluffy brings home. They can upload a photo direct from their phone.... The CatSpy survey is primarily focused on people taking photos of cats in their yard or neighbourhood. This will allow us to identify them and look at their home range or activity patterns. When people register, they can upload a photo of their own cats so that we can relate any of their activity back to their central base. Unlike TURTLESAT, we are not going to have a public map. The surveys will use mobile apps and GPS technology, but cats are a sensitive issue and we dont want people or homes or the cats identified on a map. The data will lend itself to powerful GIS modelling and this (eg. Kernel density hotspot maps) is how we will provide feedback. They are a great visual communication tool. TurtleSAT had over 1700 sightings in its first field season. We are trawling through that day now. We will be looking for volunteers for CatSAT in the near future if anyone is interested.

13.01.2022 Today we met with Lee Joachim from the Yorta Yorta Nation. WildLab is providing several scholarships each year to motivated year 10 and 11 indigenous students to conduct a research project with us. The scholarships are multi- faceted though. The students will attend UWS for 1-2 weeks each year to experience University life and integrate into some of our programs. This will hopefully provide the encouragement for them to progress to tertiary education and most importantly, est...ablish a support network @uws to help reduce drop out rates. The Yorta Yorta nation are traditional owners of a large stretch of the Murray Goulburn and this program is a small step to develop an important partnership. http://www.yynac.com.au

04.01.2022 Last week several of the lab spent time digging into the over 1000 quail eggs as one several indices of turtle nest predation. We are working in partnership with the Goulburn -Broken and North Central CMAs to evaluate the effectiveness of fox baiting in reducing nest predation rates, which are >95% annually. We also released 11 broad shell hatchlings, making it 52 in total over the last 12 months. These 52 are pretty special to us. We cut the eggs out of their mothers that killed by cars and trucks on highways. We have kept 4 at our glasshouse facilities, which will be used to highlight the turtle crisis that is occurring in Australia at present

03.01.2022 Kristen Petrov from the lab captured her first turtles this week. Kristen will be conducting food web analysis to determine the role of turtles in a range of habitats. Lets face it, rivers and wetlands are all about fish and water birds, however turtles rival carp in their biomass in the rivers and probably are key to nutrient recycling. They are likely to be the taxa that turn big dead things into little dead things. Essentially those dead animals that may take days or ...weeks to break down, are devoured in hours with turtles around. Read more about Kristen and her project here http://rspencer9.wix.com/wildlab#!kristen-petrov/c1hqh
