23.01.2022 Coming across this dolphin the other week with strong marks that had stood out to us, chatting with Dr Sue Mason who informed us that it’s often suggested that marks like this are remnant foetal folds. Foetal folds are the 'creases' in the dolphin skin that allow the dolphin to be compacted while in the uterus. The folds usually fill out and fade over time but sometimes they don't and remain, hence are referred to as remnant. This particular dolphin has a circular notch in the tip of the dorsal making it easy enough to re-identify over time. So, if we are to see it again it will be interesting to see if the foetal folds are still present.
