25.01.2022 Victoria's Conservation Regulator has reported that a dead male platypus was found with fishing line caught between its bill and head in the Mitchell River at P...icnic Point, Bairnsdale on 10 June (see photo). It is unclear if the fishing line had broken off from a rod or was part of an illegal set line. It’s important not to leave rubbish in our waterways or throw away broken lines and nets, as they have the potential to trap and drown platypus and other native species such as rakali (native water rat) turtles and birds. In January, the platypus was listed as a vulnerable species by the Victorian Government and further work is being done to protect the iconic species, including funding to support habitat restoration. The maximum penalty for illegally hunting, taking or destroying threatened wildlife is $39,652 or 24-months imprisonment, or both. Anyone with information about this incident or other wildlife crimes can make a confidential report to Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000. See more

25.01.2022 All animals in care go through health checks both at home and under veterinary consultation. This is Jessie the Ringtailed Possum, weighing in for his daily weight check. These checks are important to ensure that the animals are growing as they should and are in perfect condition for being returned to the wild.

25.01.2022 Thinking of become a carer? Here is some advise from one of our long term cares. "It is hard work, you have your good days, your bad days, the hardest lesson to learn is that we can not save them all, but we sure do try. At the end of the day, the best thing is seeing them go back to the wild where they belong"

21.01.2022 The weather is warming up and some of our Scaly friends are starting to wake up and be on the move. If you are lucky enough to meet one of them, here are some simple steps to make sure you both have a wonderful day. - If you come across each other in your yard, practice social distancing, stay away from each other. - Keep all pets away from the scaly visitor. - If the Scaly visitor is in the house and needs an eviction notice, please call WINC and we will gladly assist. - Watch out when driving, the side of the road is often where they hang out.

18.01.2022 If anyone is down on the beach and happens to see any Codium (algae in the photo), could you grab it and drop it to us at Irukanji Shark & Ray Encounters please.... It is really hard to come by and the turtles in care absolutely love it. It’s likely there will be some on the beaches after the big seas we’ve had. Thank you, from us and the turtles (mostly Beryl).
