25.01.2022 Our long-awaited web site - www.wildliferoadkill.org.au - is now live! We used part of the $2,000 Community Development Grant that we received from Warringah Council last year to build the web site and raise awareness of wildlife roadkill issues in Warringah. Please let us know what you think of it! ... Hooray!

24.01.2022 "I rescued an orphaned swamp wallaby from her dead mother's pouch on Monday this week." This is Neva's story: "I was driving to the aquatic centre in Frenchs Forest on Monday morning at about 6am. I know that dawn is a time when swamp wallabies are foraging for food, so I was keeping an eye out for them. After turning into Aquatic Drive, I noticed an adult swamp wallaby that had been struck by a car, dead on the road. I stopped to check if there was a joey in its pouch and I... noticed a tail and two legs sticking out from the pouch. I grabbed a blanket and re-usable shopping bag from the car to create a make-shift pouch and gently pulled the joey out. My hands were shaking as I hadn't done this before, but I was surprised at how easily it glided out of its mother's pouch. I then hung the make-shift pouch from the headrest of the passenger seat of my car and took it to the Forest Animal Hospital. The female joey is now in good health and being looked after by a WIRES carer." Lynleigh Greig, a member of our association and volunteer with Sydney Wildlife, has created a video, instructing motorists how to check for live marsupial young trapped in pouches. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au//story-fngr8hax-122747126

18.01.2022 Some fantastic news! We have won a grant of $10,000 in the NSW Government Community Building Partnership (CBP) program to help improve connectivity for wildlife around Garigal National Park on Sydneys Northern Beaches! So, swamp wallabies like this one will hopefully have a better chance of getting around! ... Can I congratulate Neva Poole for successfully applying for the grant on our behalf and Jacqui Marlow for fielding questions about the grant from Brad Hazzards office? What a great early Christmas present and a much needed morale boost for the association!

17.01.2022 Check out this great story of an adult powerful owl that underwent surgery for a broken wing, after being hit by a car on the Wakehurst Parkway. Despite the surgery being a success, the owl unfortunately died, likely due to a pre-operation infection. Thanks to Sydney Wildlife Volunteer Joan Reid who cared for the bird before and after the surgery. Please call (02) 9452 2933 or WIRES on 1300 094 737 if you find an injured bird.

16.01.2022 What a successful morning tea event we held this morning at Forestville RSL! Thanks to everyone who could make it! We are now very determined to meet up with NSW Premier Mike Baird, Minister for the Environment Rob Stokes and Member for Davidson Jonathon ODea. Were planning on discussing with them just how crucial roadkill mitigation devices are on roads around the new Northern Beaches Hospital and Mona Vale Road. ... Watch this space!

16.01.2022 Thanks to Joanne Weissman for sharing with us a link to this story...

15.01.2022 Wouldn't it be amazing if we could create a similar wildlife crossing near the new Northern Beaches Hospital, linking Garigal and Ku-ring-gai National Parks? Your thoughts please...

13.01.2022 We made The Manly Daily today! Every little bit helps to get out the message about our upcoming AGM and working together to reduce wildlife roadkill on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

07.01.2022 Thanks so much for all of your likes and comments! We really appreciate your support, as for so long (since 2005) we have been battling to get the message out there about the importance of local bushland connectivity for our local wildlife. We are planning on having a stall at the upcoming 21st annual Ocean Care Day Festival at Manly Beach on Sunday December 7. ... At the festival, we hope to spread the message about reducing wildlife roadkill (complete with stuffed native animals for the kids to look at) and would love any extra help in manning our stall! Please email us at [email protected] if you are available and interested in helping us out! Thanks again!

06.01.2022 It was announced today that private healthcare operator, Healthscope, will design, build, operate and maintain the new Northern Beaches Hospital at Frenchs Forest. Take a look at the fly-through of the hospital. What do you make of the roads surrounding the hospital and the green space? Just how busy will the Forest area become once the hospital opens in 2018? Were really concerned - how will our local wildlife be protected from becoming roadkill once construction commences?

06.01.2022 Flooding on the Wakehurst Parkway (near the Frenchs Forest hospital site) and Oxford Falls Road caused chaos for commuters and local residents alike. What are your thoughts on the issue of flooding in the area?

06.01.2022 Hot off the press! Our new leaflets to inform motorists what to do if they find an injured native animal on the road. We have two versions - one for children and one for the grown-ups. What do you think? ... If you can think of any schools or community groups in the Northern Beaches of Sydney that might be interested in receiving some leaflets, please email: [email protected] or leave a comment below. Thanks!

02.01.2022 Jodie Blackney has asked that we post up a special mention of a fundraising activity that she is undertaking - she is selling the book, Rescued for $10 (free postage). Money raised is going to the Leopold Wildlife Shelter and Bellbrae Wildlife Shelter, which are currently caring for burnt and injured koalas and other wildlife that survived the Wye River bushfires. Please contact Jodie Blackney directly by personal message.

02.01.2022 Congratulations to Jacqui Marlow, a founding member of our association, for securing a great story on the front page of todays Manly Daily! The story suggests that "rope crossings for possums, bridges for wallabies and culverts for bandicoots are planned as part of upgrades" for Mona Vale Road. According to the RMS Community Consultation Report, 35 per cent of the community responses to the road upgrades "focused on flora, fauna habitat and other environmental concerns...." And in response to the concerns raised, the the RMS is working with "specialist biodiversity consultants to determine the most appropriate locations for fauna crossings, fauna fencing and the type and design of crossing structures. These structures would be incorporated into the road design." You can ask questions about the wildlife roadkill mitigation measures during two community consultation briefings - Saturday 8 August, 10am to midday, Mona Vale Memorial Hall (Main Hall), 1 Park Street at Mona Vale Monday 10 August, 5pm to 7pm, Mona Vale Memorial Hall (Main Hall), 1 Park Street at Mona Vale.
