24.01.2022 Good news: A win, of sorts. Well, at least a win terms of legal processes finally being followed. The Environmental Defenders Office, acting on behalf of The Wilderness Society, challenged the Commonwealth Government’s decision to allow, without assessment, helicopter tourism within Tasmania’s wilderness. The Federal Environment minister Sussan Ley, following a Federal Court action by the EDO, announced that the controversial proposed project within the pristine Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area will require Federal assessment. It doesn’t mean the flawed project will be quashed (not yet, anyway), but at least it means it will be subject to a modicum of the scrutiny it deserves. 23.01.2022 This is an interesting article. Just one sign of our changing travel habits in a covid impacted world: https://www.news.com.au///8432575aaf6b18212b554909e2f6d867

21.01.2022 In the current issue of Wild, we've run one of the most important pieces we've run in years: ‘Luxury Lodges = Wilderness Lost’. It’s an in-depth examination of the pernicious influence of huts and lodges in our national parks, and the threats posed by their developmentsboth already-constructed and those still in planning. In short, we believe that our national parks should not be for sale, and that private development for accommodation should occur beyond park boundaries. The reasons are many, but key issues include environmental sustainability, the preservation of wilderness values, and equality of access. It’s part of a two-part series that we urge you to read, and it’s up on our website now. Go to: wild.com.au/conservati/luxury-lodges-means-wilderness-lost/

21.01.2022 I grew up in Forster and found this fascinating! What a wild experience, albeit not for the everyday walker.

20.01.2022 Wild #177, Spring 2020, has hit the stands and should be arriving in subscribers’ mailboxes shortly. It’s yet another cracking issue, one that, in particular, should keep walkers happy. There are stories on hiking the US’s Pacific Crest Trail, on walking and exploring in NSW’s Mugii Murumban, and one on chasing goats (you’ll have to read it to see what we’re talking about) in Italy’s Gran Paradiso NP. There are also track notes on NZ’s South Island stunning Five Passes route..., and a destination piece on walking in Queensland’s Sandstone Wilderness. It’s not all hiking though. There’s a beautiful photo essay on skiing and climbing in the high Arctic’s Bylot Island, and a feature on the history of Harwoods Hole (the birthplace of NZ alpine caving). For paddlers, there’s a story on the NT’s Katherine River, and one on the birth of Australia’s Whitewater Grand Prix. There’s also an excellent profile on Aussie mountaineering statesman (and Wild columnist) Tim Macartney-Snape. And, since we’re on the topic of mountaineers, there’s also a Q+A with Reinhold Messner. As for conservation, we look at the clean-up of Arnhem Land’s Djulpan Beach, and we also shine the spotlight on a little-known Tasmanian grassroots organisation Forestry Watch that is holding loggers in that state to account. Lastly, there’s also the program for the Women’s Adventure Film Tour, which, if you haven’t yet seen, you really should (www.womensadventurefilmtour.com). The program itself has some great content, like Janina Kuzma reflecting on her ski traverse of NZ’s Southern Alps, and Kopal Goyal talking about ‘Project Wild Women’, an effort to tell the stories of the difficulties facing female adventurers in India. If you’ve been following our posts, you’ll know that we weren’t sure whether, as a result of the financial uncertainties surrounding COVID-19, Wild #177 would be going to newsagencies. Well, non-subscribers will be happy to learn we’ve decided to take the risk; unlike #176, #177 will be sent to newsagents around the country. Of course, you can also pick up copies at any of our preferred stockists. And there’s our digital version, too, which looks seriously great on any device and which you can buy at Wild.com.au/subscribe. Hope you all enjoy the issue, Wild

Thanks to the ruling, chainsaws are expected to growl into action almost immediately, while endangered swift parrots, well, they're more under threat than ever. Still, the BB foundation vows to fight on, and they need our support. Read about the decision here: https://www.abc.net.au//tasmania-bob-brown-landma/13116326

18.01.2022 Some good outdoor focused reading recommendations.

17.01.2022 In the Spring 2020 issue of Wild, Janina Kuzma spoke with the magazine about her great short film project 'East West', which was selected in this year's Women's Adventure Film Tour. In case you missed the piece (and the great imagery that goes alnong with it), it's now up on our website at wild.com.au/opinion/janina-kuzma-east-west/ You can also catch the film itself on youtube here: youtu.be/tzmh83kKAio

08.01.2022 A friendly reminder and update on which crags in the Blue Mountains are still recovering from the bushfires. With so many other options available, shouldn't be too hard to stay away from them. Happy spring sending!

07.01.2022 Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is celebrating Biodiversity Month in September, kicking off with a live conversation with Professor John Woinarski this Thursday 3 September 11.30am AEST. Professor Woinarski is one of Australia's pre-eminent conservation biologists with a research career spanning over four decades, his interests include birds and mammals in northern Australia, conservation management, reserve design, and fire management. 05.01.2022 When we talk about healthy bodies in the outdoors, we are used to talking about dodgy knees, pulled wrists, and sore backs. But little or never do we talk about how a pelvis organ prolapse can affect women not just in everyday life but in particular in their pursuits of the outdoors and their life as an athlete. Anja Morris is trying to change that. She is looking for contributions of stories to a book and also for funding! Check out our post to find out more! https://wild.com.au/news/pop-goes-pelvis/

04.01.2022 Just giving a shout out for More Than It Hurts, an anthology of mountaineering and climbing stories from Aussie or Aussie-based women and gender diverse people. Edited by Sydney-based Wendy Bruere, the book was launched last month; in it, 14 climbers and mountaineers tell hilarious and insightful tales of adventure and misadventure. Tim Macartney-Snape (legendary alpinist and Wild columnist) has described the book as inspiring, engrossing and thought-provoking. Anyway, head to https://www.climbinganchors.com.au/more-than-it-hurts if you’d like to learn more about the book or to pick up a copy.

03.01.2022 Hey folks, The draft management plan for climbing in Gariwerd has been released. Our sister mag VL has more on it. Responses to the plan are taken for the next ten weeks.

03.01.2022 I have never been to Kilimanjaro. The closest I have been is editing Roland Handel's great account of attempting Kili that we ran a few issues back in Wild #172 https://wild.com.au/fea/night-remember-climbing-kilimanjaro. But now it appears it's not only the snows of Kilimanjaro that might be disappearing; soon, too, all the challenge of scaling this magnificent peak might be gone forever. The proposed cable car that would forever scar and ruin the mystique of one of the world's truly great mountains has been officially approved. It might still never happen, but the prospect is scary. https://www.outsideonline.com/2/cable-car-mount-kilimanjaro

02.01.2022 Wild columnist Bob Brown was arrested earlier today while fighting to defend swift parrots. Although his is the highest profile arrest in battle to protect the habitat of the endangered birds, it’s important to know he is only one of the many brave activists who have stood up in North East Tasmania recently to fight for what’s right. Others have been arrested in recent days engaging in the same battle, and after Bob’s arrest, three activists remained locked onto logging machinery causing logging to stop. To learn more, check out the Bob Brown Foundation’s post below.

02.01.2022 Our friends over at The North Face have just put up online ‘East West’, a film documenting Janina Kuzma’s, Anna Smoothy’s and Ayako Kuroda’s ski traverse of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. It’s a great film, at turns beautiful, at turns inspiring, at turns historical, and at turns harrowing. But it’s tragic, too; the impacts of climate change on this amazing landscape are all-too-apparent. You can head to TNF’s Facebook page to view it, or watch it on YouTube https://bit.ly/EASTWEST-YouTube

02.01.2022 The Women's Adventure Film Tour 20/21 presented by Crumpler and featured in Wild 177 is premiering ONLINE tonight! It's also available to watch all weekend!
