24.01.2022 Hello friends, I have now created a Facebook page for the business. I didnt know it was against Facebook rules to use a personal account for a business. Thankfully the migration was easy. Some photos have not been transferred but they may be put back later. Now to get on with the website!
22.01.2022 The latest pictures from the shroom room.
22.01.2022 This is a bag of Pleurotus citrinopileatus - Golden Oyster mycelium, that seemed to have failed so I took the fruiting tub it was in out into the carport and promptly forgot about it, it was supposed to go into the compost. The following photos show what I found when I looked inside to see what was in the tub!
21.01.2022 Not just yummy produce - another RIR hen has gone broody, she has 10 eggs. Fingers crossed that all goes well and she hatches them safely in 21 days time.

17.01.2022 Going home!! 12 days in Brisbane, mostly in the city.....URGH. Tomorrow home at last - via Daleys Nursery in Kyogle to get more herbs including 3 Gingko trees. Wonderful at last, it feels like half a lifetime since I was at home in the peace and quiet.
17.01.2022 Anyone for cauliflower? Freshly harvested today from on the farm by a very proud grower.
16.01.2022 The website has been updated. Please check it out. www.wildmountainherbfarm.com

14.01.2022 The pallet Poultry Palace - not quite finished yet.
13.01.2022 The new RIR chooks were living in the boysenberry patch until the fruit started to set. I had only cleared one row of grass and general mess, the chooks had a b...last in under the canes. Now the fruit are on - lots of fruit and very, very big as can be seen by comparing them to a teaspoon. Sweet and delicious too. Then theres the honey - it is amazing, very complex and of a flavour I have never encountered before. We will drain the other 3 frames in a week or two, so the 10 x 500ml jars we already have are for sale at $7. See more
13.01.2022 Beeing the 3rd quarter of the moon phase, Ive sown more seeds of root crops, put lightweight boards over the carrots and parsnips - how long should they stay on? Until tiny shoots show? Early Wonder beetroot and Gladalan onions have emerged, cabbages growing very well. Tags are on the best Cos lettuce and a small patch of Atomic Red carrots - these to be kept for seed. Looking for asparagus crowns to plant in the newly renovated bed - anyone know of a good supplier? Preferably Organic or at least chemical free of course.
12.01.2022 Been busy in the gardens clearing the weeds that got away while I was in Brisbane. Direct sown cabbage and lettuce seeds so I hope it is not too cold for germination. Those other fruit trees have held onto their buds, nothing burst forth thankfully and the one that did blossom is holding onto the flowers - will it manage to produce any fruit, I wonder? Garlic looks terrific, & just as well cause we eat heaps of it. Full moon is nearly here so I get a couple of days to do oth...er things - like knitting & eating chocolate & making that Luscious Lemon Syrup to drink up all day and night. Keeps the cold at bay nicely, not a sniffle to be seen. Ready to have a go at herbal cream for my rough gardeners hands. Calendula & chickweed oil is ready, have plenty of beeswax with propolis. This will be my first attempt at skin creams/salves. It is a herb farm after all... See more
12.01.2022 Chooks are loving their new house & laying like mad. I found one RIR pullet rearranging the nest - hope she doesnt go clucky until I get the broody pens sorted! Theres only Tony & I so what are we to do with 5 or 6 eggs every day? Jackie French says "the best way to preserve eggs is in a rich fruit cake" - gotta love that lady. Put dried fruit on the shopping list.
11.01.2022 Wild Mountain Herb Farm has been quiet lately due to Tony working on a house building project and Barb is full on finishing her studies. The garden is still producing (we have lots of persimmons on the go at the moment), the bees are very busy, and we are planning for our next projects, a dedicated medicinal herb garden and cultivation of Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail) mushrooms that are used in herbal cancer treatments.
11.01.2022 The latest effort from the Wild Mountain Herb Farm bakery. Estonian Kringle Braid.
11.01.2022 Not exactly ground breaking but a harvest is a harvest no matter how meagre. Just in case you cant read the display, that is 78g of Pleurotus eryngii (King Oysters) My first ever harvest!
11.01.2022 How I wish I could get my phone to talk to my computer - then I could show you all the good things happening at WMHF. Today I planted out 6 capsicums that have been in the cold frame all winter, transplanted Sugarloaf cabbages, chicory and Cos lettuce too. Eagerly awaiting new seeds to poke through in their trays and pots. And the chooks are happy with their new Pallet Poultry Palace - all the girls laid an egg today (except the baby, of course). So we have more eggs than we... can eat - luckily one of my local friends has offered to buy a dozen plus any vegies spare and this is the start of the chooks paying for their own feed at last. Dinner will be a roulade made with a mix a bit like a souffl, filled with Swiss Chard, Atomic Red carrots, some terrific marinated sun-dried tomatoes made last summer, garlic and heaps of cheese. I could even pinch the tiny basil leaves that are growing slowly. Most of this is home grown without any chemicals at all (though not certified organic at this farm, unlike my garden at Laglan). Soon I will be groaning under the buckets of goodies to be cooked up and bottled - thats life in this paradise we call home. See more
10.01.2022 My Mush-Room - anything mushroom related

09.01.2022 The first order for a Wild Mountain Herb Farm produce box. Thank you to the wonderful supporters of our business Vivienne Lapham & Steve McLauchlan from Grumpys Ginger Beer. The box contained home grown fruits and vegetables, preserves and sauce.
09.01.2022 Spring seems to have arrived on the warm north westerly wind. Such beautifully mild days and even the nights are warmer. I have TOMATO and CAPSICUM seeds germinated on damp kitchen paper, so every day I put a few more up into tubes. The first of the new ASPARAGUS spears are peeking through the mulch I made up with autumn leaves put through the chipper with slashed paddock grass and horse manure. My 2 wonderful warriors, Tony & John, have been busy building the new Poultry Pal...let Palace (photos will be up tomorrow) just in time for those young Rhodie pullets to begin laying. Included in the plan is 2 special broodie nooks so I am hoping that they are true-to-type and are keen to be mothers of a huge flock of chicks. The first PEACHES are setting, the PLUMS have flowers and most of the other trees are loaded with big, fat buds about ready to burst. The Eureka LEMON wont quit with about 30 mature fruit and new flowers setting as well. I just hope we dont have some rogue, late frosts. Watering is becoming an issue with the ground drying out fast. When is rain coming? HERBS In the potting shed I have started some trays of Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera) seeds, taken cuttings from the Mitchells Black Peppermint (Mentha piperita) and potted on the 3 precious Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) plants from last summer. Ladys Mantle (Leonurus cardiac )has poked her head up through the winter covering of mulch. Vervain (Verbena officinalis) is volunteering all around the garden which is great as it is one of the most used herbs in our medicine chest. Tony is prone to stress headaches that stem from tight shoulder and neck muscles, and Vervain is the very best antispasmodic for this kind of tension. I am also taking cuttings of Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) as my studies have shown it to have antihistamine properties (along with other wonderful benefits) which really help to settle my mad response to ticks and leeches. It is also helping Johns itchy red and scaly skin patches which seem to be a side-effect of the chemotherapy, possibly a way of the body removing some of the toxins. We make it into a tea with other suitable herbs, usually including Licorice root to support the adrenal glands and make the tea taste pretty damned good. Enough chatter - look out for the photos of the Poultry Palace coming soon.... See more
09.01.2022 A look inside the fruiting chamber today!
07.01.2022 33mm OF RAIN....not a lot but very, very welcome. It brought the tank back to 1/2 full so I washed the linen this morning - still bucketed out the water onto the garden though. Zucchini plants are now in; these were grown from seeds that began here 4 years ago so I suspect they are well adapted now. They are tucked in with mulch from the chook house and wearing shade hats for the next couple of days. The chooks have a new pile of leaves to work on....loving it! They ar...e laying very well so next week, when school resumes, I will have a couple of dozen to take in for the teachers who have expressed interest in buying these fabulous eggs.. And I am working slowly on fixing the broody pens for the expected births, making it snake-proof is a challenge but essential. Poor KO (next door neighbour) had the WIRES man come and remove 4 entangled pythons from her shed. They are mating, he will keep them safe for a month or so then bring them back here to their mountain home. for the births... Fruit trees are beautiful and we have lots of stone fruit setting. I can see the preserving equipment will have to be resurrected before long as we will have lots to put by for puddings all winter. Time to put nets on the "outside" trees, those in the tree garden are safely under the big net. In under the TG net is another layer - a cabbage-moth-proof tunnel which is well stocked already and more seedlings in the potting shed to plant out in a fortnight or so. The tomato trellis has its first occupants too - Black Krims of course! And a couple of varieties of determinate types on a new bed with a horizontal fame for them to grow through as it is quite breezy at that end. So finally we can get on with spring gardening....should I ever get the phone to talk to the computer I will share some photos of the anticipation. See more
07.01.2022 Dry winter, dry spring...saving all household water to keep the trees going. Plenty of seed trays and seedlings in the cold frame and the "warm room" in the house are growing up until they can go out. But unless it rains, they will have to wait a while longer as our big tank is too low for comfort. However the exercise is good for this old body, scooping the water buckets out of the bathtub and hauling them around the garden. And the stone fruit trees are happy enough, the e...arly peach is setting fruit though not as much as last year. The others are flowering beautifully, even the lemon has tiny babies along with mature fruit and some of the other fruits (apples, nashi, figs) are developing swollen buds. I am focusing more on perennial food plants this season - fruit trees, more berries, asparagus and suchlike. As well as buckets of water, there are more barrow loads of woodchips to spread under the fruit trees, pushed up from the last of the heaps down on the ridge - oh, about where that wattle tree is on the right of our photo above. Its a good workout getting it up to the tree garden! Chooks are really into the laying thing now, lots and lots of beautiful eggs. I hope the rain comes soon as the kale is going to seed and I want more of it to keep feeding the chooks, they love it and the yolks are so, so rich and golden and firm. Delicious indeed. See more
06.01.2022 HERBS finally. Today I put up my first bottle of herbal tincture - Verbena officinalis which is a very effective nervine. This is a college project so finally something good and useful is coming from my 10 years of study. Heres the fresh herb which was the air dried inside for 8 days, then into the menstruum which is 80%proof artisa gin from the Araluen Distillery, Sydney. I will be straining/pressing this in a week, then it will be on the daily medication list to ease Tonys serious muscle tension that is causing him such pain.
03.01.2022 Tony has been busy in the Wild Mountain Herb Farm kitchen again. Top Caramelized Onion, Cheese, Garlic, Sage and Rosemary Bread, below Flourless Chocolate Cake with Coffee Mousse.
02.01.2022 SPRING This self-sown fruit tree is right outside the kitchen window in the "Pot Luck" garden, giving us a magnificent sight every day. I wonder what fruit it will turn out to be?
02.01.2022 The latest pictures from the WMHF shroom room. The new flow hood (made by Tony), petri dish inoculation, the new fruiting chamber with mist maker (again made by Tony)
02.01.2022 Too many tomato and capsicum seedlings - going to waste if anyone wants some. 4 or 5 varieties but most have lost their tags... 3 fabulous Rhode Island Red chickens, 2 appear to be purebred but not sure of the gender yet. I have separated the laying hens so that any chicks from now on will be purebred.
