Pigme...nt management is a multifactorial approach and can include both topical and internal approaches with the correct health care professional. However, the main topical pathways of tyrosinase inhibitors, SPF application and antioxidants will be generally discussed. Each of these and their mechanism of action within the skin is complex so we will only touch on the main ideas. Tyrosinase is an enzyme essential in the making of pigmentation, therefore tyrosinase inhibitors work by inhibiting (slowing or stopping) the pathways that create pigmentation. Examples of commonly used tyrosinase inhibitors include; hydroquinone (the most potent and is generally prescribed), kojic acid, ascorbic acid, retinoids, niacinamide and liquorice derivatives to name a few. Sun protection (SPF) is another way to limit the amount of pigment being produced by reducing the damage from UV exposure. It is also going to help with the prevention of some skin cancers. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Resveratrol and Kojic Acid are not only great for overall skin integrity and health but work by scavenging free radicals which cause harm to our cells.
