24.01.2022 And here she is in all her glory My (pretty much) completed woven backpack! One of my goals this year was to make my own backpack using my hands and local, natural materials... and then take it out bush with me and everything I'd need to survive a few days. Not only did me and my backpack survive... but we had an epic adventure with HEAPS of nourishment from the land - native snacks and fresh water. Here's to many more! ... She's made using Bangalow Palm, Cabbage Palm, Gymea and Spear Lily, Coastal Pandanus and NT Pandanus. And finished off with a galah feather detail, kangaroo leather, quartz crystal and coastal hibiscus bark cordage. 22.01.2022 Hope you're all having a wild weekend, exploring some new places I headed down to Barrington Tops NP last week and I can't believe I hadn't been to this area before! Stunning mountains. Lush waterfalls. Fern gullies. Sub alpine ridges. Antarctic beech forests. Here's your reminder to explore local, especially now that the restrictions are easing in a lot of places (in NSW, ACT, NT, WA and QLD anyway). 21.01.2022 COMFORT I think a lot about this topic... and how in our modern day lives we're just so damn comfortable all the time. Everything we do is for our comfort & routine, people so set in their ways that they can't deal with slight changes. I have been experimenting with my own comfort levels as of late, and that includes sleeping in as many weird and wonderful places I can find. Usually in my swag, or hammock in the wild. Last week, I slept in 2 different logs. Yes, there were creatures. Yes, I had weird dreams. Yes, I had 2 pretty incredibly amazing sleeps (I actually slept all night!). I will keep you updated on the weird places I am sleeping! In the meantime.... where's the weirdest place you've slept???

15.01.2022 Shit just got real As many of you know, I'm obsessed with wild foods. I am always on the hunt. Mostly motivated by hunger, and my willingness to learn all the things about native bushfoods I can! I've been meaning to get this book forever... And have relied on my own tastebuds and mentors guidance thus far! Can't wait to share some wisdom in upcoming workshops with y'all!... 15.01.2022 Are you eating local native foods regularly? and yep, ice cream is included in that! I recently found a rad business in Bruns making ice creams using Australian native flavours like smoked paperbark, davidson plum, finger lime, native raspberry and sour nuts. Obvs, being bush food obsessed, I had to go find them! They use seasonally available local bushfoods to make their creations, so their menu is always different. @naturalicecreamaustralia are open in Bruns on Fri-Sun. #notsponsored... I just love what they are about! Thanks for existing and spreading the wild love x

09.01.2022 This is me at 5.30am at my sit spot listening to the dawn chorus birdsong Ever since coming back from @wangatlodge Bird Language and Nature Connection Retreat, I have a newfound ear for birds. I have always struggled to remember different bird calls (As I'm a visual learner)... but now have some new techniques to help them stick! I've decided to keep a basic datasheet on my computer to write down any wildlife I see or hear from my desk while I'm in the office (at home). I... now live across from a decent patch of littoral rainforest and it's filled with birds! Yay! And yeah I'm a wildlife scientist so naturally love data... but it shouldn't just be us who are the knowledge keepers of our areas! We can all be local knowledge keepers of our seasonal calendars unique to our areas... particularly threatened and migrating birds species. A hot tip given by Andrew Turbill at the retreat... everyone should have a bird bath! They are a great way to observe your local birds and will actually save birds when times are tough (which is now pretty much every summer and dry season!).

02.01.2022 The cinnamon myrtle are flowering! Yay! And the lemon myrtle won't be too far behind either. I love watching all the seasonal changes. Even though it means one of my favs Coastal Aspen (Achronychia) have stopped fruiting -wahhhh. It's unofficially summer next week, and officially on 21st December for the summer solstice - the longest period of daylight of the year. And then it's all davidson plums, pigface, watermelon, bunya nuts, mangoes, cherries and cheer!!!
