19.01.2022 This time of year we start to see animals like Wedge Tailed Eagles begin to venture closer to the forest interface and areas where humans are. Weather conditions in the foothills and the movements of their prey mean spotting them alongside of the road is a more common occurrence. I came across a pair of Eagles yesterday just outside of Maydena as I was driving along Gordon River Rd. Pulling over off the road I hopped out and snuck along the edge of the trees silently with c...amera in hand, hoping to get a close up look without disturbing them. Sure enough I was able to walk on to the pair feeding on the roadkill they had dragged off the road. This younger Wedge Tailed Eagle flew up into the tree directly above its kill, only metres away from me! One of the most important things you can do to ensure you capture moments like these is having your camera settings pre set. Understanding your camera and lens combo and how it performs under different light conditions is key. Knowing this means before I even approach any animal I know exactly where to set my shutter, aperture, ISO, white balance and auto-focus mode so that I never miss a shot. I use back-button focusing modes, and for birds in flight I utilize a locked-on tracking focusing method, allowing me to simply track the movement of the bird while holding the shutter down as it moves through the air. #tasmania #wildlife #tasmanianwildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifetour #wildlifeguide #birdphotography #birdsofprey #eagle #wedgetailedeagle #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot #natgeo #natgeowildlife #natgeowild #australia #australianbirds #australianwildlife #derwentvalleytasmania #hobartandbeyond #nature #naturephotography #Sony #SonyAlpha #SonyA9 #SonyPhotography #SonyAlphaANZ #bbcearth #discoveraustralia #discovertasmania
18.01.2022 A bit of backyard birding while in isolation. 17.01.2022 This large older male Platypus lives in what we reckon is the best place for spotting these incredible creatures when visiting Tasmania's Derwent Valley. After spending about 30 minutes watching him from further away I slowly approached him, stopping when he stopped so as to not frighten him, and tried to not make any noise as I stepped across the bank. This particular Platypus is the dominant male in his territory, and his behavior reflects this in his confidence and activ...ity level even when people are around. #tasmania #hobartandbeyond #discoveraustralia #discovertasmania #wildlife #tasmanianwildlife #wildlifetour #wildlifeguide #wilderness #wildernessphotography #wildlifephotography #platypus #derwentvalleytasmania #mountfieldnationalpark #SonyAlpha #SonyPhotography #SonyA9 #SonyAlphaANZ #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #tassiestyle #tassie
17.01.2022 Before we put a pause on our tours due to covid-19, I took this photo on our last Spotlight Tour. This Eastern Quoll was quite busy hunting for insects like moths, moving in and out of the long grass to grab it's prey. Eastern Quolls aren't easy to find and follow if you don't know what you're doing. Luckily we do, and on every spotlight tour we've taken we've yet to fail to see at least a couple of these amazing animals, along with everything else we see along the way. When... we come out on the other side of this health crisis, and the outside world opens up to us all, we'll be as excited as ever to deliver experiences like this where we bring you close up with our native wildlife! #tasmania #tasmanianwildlife #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifetour #safari #wildlifesafari #wildlifeguide #tassie #discovertasmania #australia #australianwildlife #yourshotphotographer #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #quoll #easternquoll #spotlight #spotlighttour #nocturnal #tassiestyle #tour #tourism #wilderness #wildernessphotography #nature #naturephotography #outdoors
16.01.2022 Taken on our last spotlight tour a bit over a week ago, we were able to photograph this Eastern Quoll as it dragged a Pademelon carcass out of the long grasses. You certainly don't get to see this sort of behavior every day. Usually on our tours you I'll see Eastern Quolls hunting for things like moths. After having a closer look at the carcass it was clear that it was left by either a Devil or a Spotted Tail Quoll as the top half was already clean gone. It's always such a t...reat to see wildlife do it's thing in it's natural environment, especially our native nocturnal species. The key to capturing these moments on camera is having the right gear for the job. Using a mirrorless system, with a fast telephoto lens, I am still able to freeze the moment despite the low light conditions. Most importantly though is the capacity for silent shooting. Using a mirrorless system allows me to have far less of an impact on the behavior of the animal as the cameras shutter isn't loudly opening and closing as it would with a DSLR. #tasmania #wildlifephotography #tasmanianwildlife #wilderness #wildernessphotography #tassiestyle #tassie #keeptassiewild #australia #australianwildlife #safari #wildlifesafari #tour #tourguide #wildlifetour #wildlifeguide #wildlifetourism #wildlife #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #quoll #easternquoll #Sony #SonyAlpha #SonyA9 #SonyAlphaANZ #SonyPhotography #hobartandbeyond #discovertasmania
16.01.2022 This young female Tasmanian Wedge Tailed Eagle is getting very accustomed to me and my camera while on my daily walk. Unfortunately, due to the deforestation going on all around the area, which is gradually getting closer and closer to the nesting sites of these local Eagle populations, this #wedgetailedeagle and others like her are facing even more pressures and threats to their survival. #tasmania #tasmanianwildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlife #wildlifetour #wildlifeguide #tassiestyle #wild #keeptassiewild #deforestation #environment #conservation #extinction #eagle #birds #birdsofprey #birdphotography #raptor #discovertasmania #hobartandbeyond #visittasmania #tasmanianwilderness #wilderness #Sony #SonyAlpha #SonyPhotography #SonyA9
15.01.2022 One of the photographs I captured alongside the video posted the other day of this quite large and very friendly Platypus. Getting a close up experience with native wildlife here in Tasmania can be a tricky task if you don't know what your doing, lucky for you we're here to help. A big part of all our tours is showing our guests how to recognize and react to particular forms of body language communicated by our native wildlife. It is with our understanding of this languag...e, our knowledge of the variety of species in Tasmania and our wealth of experience that allows us to deliver experiences like this on each and every tour we take. #tasmania #wildlife #tasmanianwildlife #platypus #wildlifephotography #wildlifetour #wildlifeguide #wilderness #nature #naturephotography #yourshotphotographer #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #derwentvalleytasmania #discovertasmania #australia #australianwildlife #tour #tourguide #wild #SonyAlpha #SonyPhotography #SonyA9

08.01.2022 Sustainable Timber Tasmania? What a joke. And that joke is on us all, as forestry industry in #tasmania begins to wipe out even more of our environment, while costing taxpayers millions each year. This is all happening in an environment that is home to our native wildlife and plant species already under immense pressure and threat of extinction. Forestry, and the various counterparts that assist them, would see a scorched landscape before ever admitting any fault in their pr...actice. Yet they have comprehensively failed to deliver on their "economically sustainable" promise, costing tax payers $65 MILLION each year on average. More than ever, we cannot afford to prop up an already dying industry. And what of the values in our states natural assets? People flock to Tasmania from all over the world to experience what our native forests and wilderness areas have to offer. Nature based tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and our state has an incredible amount to offer for years to come if we conserve and protect these natural assets afforded to us. People do not come to Tassie to see scenes like this one. Where most of us marvel at the huge Man Ferns (Dicksonia Antarctica) found throughout our state's forests, the Forestry Industry burn them, bulldoze them and level everything around them leaving them to dry out and die in the sun (These same ferns would fetch quite a large price in a nursery, yet they can't even figure out how to at least see some profits from their destructive practices). Clear felling the landscape and burning the perfectly usable timber they leave behind. Destroying habitats, burrows and pathways home to our native wildlife. Ruining water catchment areas, bulldozing through riparian zones and dumping their rubbish along the way. Burning everything they can, because they can, with no regard for the environmental crisis the world is currently facing. All perpetuated by a fraudulent State-owned business enterprise. I think we need to ask more of those who represent us in government. As Tasmanians we should expect better. Because if we don't, our state will be reduced to a smouldering mess, worth nothing.
05.01.2022 This is the male White Bellied Sea Eagle that lives and hunts along the main river systems around #mountfieldnationalpark and along the back of @russellfallscottages He looks a bit older than the female Sea Eagle, and has seen quite a bit more of the territorial disputes this breeding pair have with the local Wedge Tailed Eagles. His beak is a bit misshapen and he often looks a bit rough and disheveled, likely because of these territorial disputes and scraps he has been inv...olved in. One of the most important key elements to getting sharp, detailed and interesting photographs of bird of prey in flight is not only understanding your camera equipment, but understanding the animal you wish to photograph. By observing the daily routines, behavior patterns and movements of these local Sea Eagles I was able to position myself in a spot where I knew I would have the best vantage point that would look directly across at the Sea Eagle, with the sun behind me, as it travelled from one of it's favourite hunting areas to another as it usually does around the same time each day. Understanding all these factors means I can set my Camera and Lens settings prior to shooting, allowing me to pre-focus and fire away several shots to ensure I capture and freeze moments like this. Instead of the more common positions where we are either looking up at or down on the Sea Eagle, here we are level with this incredible aerialist, allowing for a more interesting interaction where we can find detail in the eyes and in it's wings downbeat. #tasmania #tasmanianwildlife #wildlife #wildlifeguide #wildlifetour #wildlifephotography #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #eagle #seaeagle #whitebelliedseaeagle #birdsofprey #birdphotography #birds #birdsinflight #wildlifetourism #tasmanianwilderness #tassie #tassiestyle #nature #naturephotography #australia #australianwildlife #discovertasmania #discoveraustralia #hobartandbeyond #Sony #SonyAlpha #SonyA9
02.01.2022 A very friendly Platypus, seen in his usual spot at the usual times. 01.01.2022 While the restrictions brought on by covid-19 mean that we can't operate our tours as we normally would, we are still out in the field each and every day, seeking out wildlife and learning about their habits, routines and localized behavior patterns. When everything calms down and these restrictions are lifted, we will be ready to deliver our premier Tasmanian wildlife experience for all our guests once more. In the meantime, we will keep updating our socials with our latest ...photographs of the various wildlife species we encounter as we continue to explore Tasmania's wild places. This image was taken a couple of days ago as we explored an area we knew was full of Lyre Bird activity. As we followed it's various calls we came across this fella on one of his display Lek's and were able to take a few shots before he disappeared into the dense understory. #tasmania #tasmanianwildlife #lyrebird #superblyrebird #australianwildlife #australianbirds #birds #birdphotography #wildlifephotography #wildlifetour #wildlifeguide #wildlife #tassie #discoveraustralia #discovertasmania #hobartandbeyond
01.01.2022 A bit of backyard birding while we're isolating. This young Grey Butcher Bird decided to get a closer look at me, perching itself on this old fence post. Butcher Birds are named so for their tendency to hang up their prey on thorns, twigs and small branches. #tasmania #wildlife #birds #birdphotography #tsmanianbirds #tasmanianwildlife #australia #australianbirds #australianwildlife #birding #backyardwildlife #isolation #isolationcreation #isolationwildlifephotography #SonyAlpha #SonyPhotography #SonyA9 #SonyAlphaANZ #discoveraustralia #discovertasmania #hobartandbeyond #maydena #tassie #tassiestyle #tassiegram #keeptassiewild #wildlifephotography #wildlifetour #wildlifeguide #wilderness
