24.01.2022 36 DAYS OF TYPE Introducing the SHARFT Typeface. A few years ago, I likened the shark-culling issue in Australia to the concept of giving people the shaft as it felt like they were being killed unnecessarily, at the time. It was a heated debate because, understandably, no human wants to be at the mercy of a shark, but they are an integral part of our ecosystem. So, I decided to make up a swear word amalgamating the two concepts! ... n. SHARFT means to recklessly obliterate without due consideration. When #36daysoftype came around, I thought it was time to share my sharft-babies. These set of glyphs were hand-cut for that rustic and emotive knife-edge effect and then vectorised in Illustrator. I will share some of my process at the end. To follow the journey, check out @wildworksdesign on Instagram. For now, welcome in the letter A.

23.01.2022 FIRST LIFE. THEN SPACES. Last night, I spent the evening with Kevin McCleod, host of Grand Designs UK. Here are some take-home messages and thoughts: Buildings are repositories of human energy. Kevin McCleod. ... Honour the value of human energy as a life giving force. Entropy is a result of existence - everything that has come together is destined to fall back apart again. We need to continue to put in that beautiful human energy into a space through stories - that give meaning, maintenance and care to keep these spaces alive. First life, then spaces then buildings - the other way around never works. Jan Gehl. Don’t make people fit spaces. Make spaces to fit people. Human-centred, peeps. All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space that contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space. Philip Johnson Consider The Ephebic Oath, as creatively translated by Kevin for today’s global context and orated by the audience last night, pictured in the photographs below. Social media has democratised information and shifted the structures of influence." 21.01.2022 New Year, Who Dis? Goalposts, like the beginning of a new year, can be a great invitation to reassess, recalibrate and reconfigure our plans and dreams on a personal and a professional level. However, if you are a philosophical being like me, you may reflect and assess at such a great scale that it can sweep you up in time and space for a moment! And before long, you are halfway through January without a solid plan in place - but with a much stronger desire to live with intention. #smallbusiness #wellness #perthbusiness #femalerunbusiness #freelancer #graphicdesign #humancentreddesign #wellbeing #newstart #designthinking #ladyboss #bossbabe #designlife #branding #designyourlife

20.01.2022 THE GOOD MARKET *The Good Market* at this year’s Social Impact Festival was gorgeous. If you don’t know much about this year’s festival, it was shaped and led by a group of Aboriginal elders. Their wisdom would have been invaluable throughout the festival in planning the event experience, the opportunity for participants to learn and connect, and the mission to influence the future of social impact in Western Australia. I was taken by the profound aboriginal dances tha...t really spread the spirit of life, animal instinct, connection and oneness and the beautiful live-scribing illustrations from the week’s festival events. I seriously love how the festival was captured in this form. I also purchased a couple of eco-friendly and conscious products such as a zebra pin to add to my *wildworkspace* and an elephant woodblock I can’t wait to ink up! I also tried some delicious bush tucker - a kangaroo sausage roll and emu curry puff! After the dances and food, I felt a deep sense of connection. I really wish I had attended more events at this year’s festival! It’s ends at 3pm so head on down if you have the chance! #socialimpact #spirit #nature #humancentreddesign #wisdom #humanexperience #dance #design #consciousliving #gr8fl

18.01.2022 36 DAYS OF TYPE Better late than never! Earlier in the year, I shared each glyph of the SHARFT Typeface for #36daysoftype. I likened the shark-culling issue in Australia, a few years back, to the concept of giving people the shaft as it felt like they were being killed unnecessarily, at the time. It was a heated debate - and understandably - as no human wants to be at the mercy of a shark, but this apex predator is an integral part of our ecosystem. So, I decided... to make up a word amalgamating the two concepts! n. SHARFT means to recklessly obliterate without due consideration. These glyphs were hand-cut using black card and a Stanley trimmer for that rustic and emotive knife-edge effect and then vectorised in Illustrator. What do you think, peeps? Should I turn it into a fully fledged working font? Ps. This is the last time I’ll use this short-lived brand mark as I have a new look in the works for my relaunch! 09.01.2022 What’s your 2021 word? So, it’s a pretty trendy thing to be doing this year - setting an intention rather than a New Year’s Resolution. Well it makes sense, given the year that was. And I am all for intentions. It means we can carry on refining who we are, where we are and where we are going. We can carry on working on how we act and react to the world around us. We can guide actions and states of being without attachment to outcomes. ... Many words have seemed appropriate and today I am settling on flow. All too often, when something is forced the outcome is sub-optimal. When you find that magical flow state, it feels amazing, its meditative, it’s great for your nervous system and body AND you often produce your best work. Win win! And hey, what a BEAU-TI-FUL ligature in the FL with this font! It almost reads as Now and that’s ok with me. Being in flow, in the now, being present... they are all great places to be. What’s your word for 2021? #flow #flowstate #designlife #ligatures #intention #2021 #goals

09.01.2022 2020 - A Wild Journey We weathered the collective storm of 2020 from our own unique boats, riding the ups and downs, getting thrown overboard and climbing back in. And let’s not forget all the goodness that came from the storms, and all of the goodness that is always there, underneath, on top and throughout every day. ... Now the sun has set on 2020 and we can make way for a symbolic new beginning. What would you like 2021 to bring?

07.01.2022 CHANGE THE WORLD I’m down at #changetheworld today to learn about using social media for social impact. So far we’ve heard from @_anastasia.symons_ from @ruokday, Scott Guerini from @scottsgreatwalk4telethon and Alicia Hancock from @hancockcreative. Halfway through and I already have big dreams to #changetheworld - even if that’s for one person. No matter our abilities, we can all make a positive impact in the world around us. @ Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough

07.01.2022 36 DAYS OF TYPE UPDATE As you know, many designers have embarked on the 36 Days of Type challenge, exploring a new letterform each day. Some have created very varied designs each day, however, I decided to pull together a full typographic set called Sharft, which I will reveal in its entirety at the end! Yay! ... Today’s letter is the mighty O. *See posts on insta for concept deets! #36daysoftype #36days_o #sharftconcept #typography

04.01.2022 DESIGN THINKING FOR INNOVATORS I recently attended the one day bootcamp Design Thinking For Innovators by the cool cats at @skillsofthemodernage. As eager participants, we were guided through HCD frameworks and handy tools to enable organisations to better frame design problems, empathise with end-users, ideate, prototype and test their ideas in a fast-paced and creative environment. ... Thanks for sharing your (prototyping) toys and know-how, Matt and Nate! Highly recommended to anyone wishing to delve into human-centred design, service design, user experience or design thinking methologies! @ Claisebrook Design Community

04.01.2022 CREATIVE TYPES Think of yourself as a creative? Here’s a fun quiz to see what qualities you possess (without taking it too seriously, of course!). Apparently, I’m a dreamer who works best with innovators #thedreamer #theinnovator #empathy #stories #systems #mycreativetype

01.01.2022 CAMPAIGN LOVE I love this campaign as it invests a deep level of empathy for those at the heart of the cause. The featured quote reveals a common experience for a young person enduring cancer, where an identity of being a brave" young person or an "inspiration is placed upon the young person. Although it is well-intentioned, can you think of any reasons why this may not always be a good label? *My thoughts are in the comments.... In the past, some charities have subscribed to powerful stigmas, labels or stereotypes such as these to evoke an emotional response in the eyes of viewers. These strong responses inspire much-needed donations for their causes. It is a means to an end where one end is prioritised over another. In other words, this form of fund-raising can be at the detriment of the psychological and emotional needs of the beneficiary. Thankfully, I am seeing these approaches less and less as greater empathy is employed. CanTeen has a mission to support, develop and empower its young people and this shines through in all visual communications. Thank you to Havas, for bringing these values to life.
