24.01.2022 Can Israel Folau make a comeback? Controversial athlete Israel Folau is attempting to make a comeback to Rugby League after he was sacked for homophobic posts on social media. Can the NRL take him back while promoting inclusiveness? How should Rugby Australia have responded during the crisis? How does Folau balance freedom of religion, and the responsibility of free speech, while promoting an inclusive society in Australia? I discuss all this and more with Wilkinson Butler's Sports Director, Liam Cox.

21.01.2022 Learning from 6 outstanding PR disasters in the last 12 months, we look for the reasons why people at the top of their careers make such rotten decisions. - Prince Andrew’s inexplicably bad television interview (not) explaining his connection to the Epstein under-age sex scandal takes the cake. - The banks open and closed the year with spectacularly avoidable PR decisions, first NAB and later Westpac losing both the CEO and Chair. How could such huge salaries deliver such u...nder-whelming results? - Rugby Australia’s handling of the Israel Folau sacking occupied water-cooler gossip for waaaay too long much of the damage simply avoidable. - And while Labor’s failed election campaign was so wrong in retrospect, no less so was Scott Morrison’s weirdly inappropriate Hawaii holiday while his country burned. 21.01.2022 As we move into the difficult, slow and frustrating recovery phase of the bushfire catastrophe, Community Liaison techniques learned from some mining, infrastructure and construction companies can be useful. In those sectors feedback to the companies on community concerns about developments are aided by: Community Liaison Officers, and Community Liaison Committees (CLCs). Other valuable resources are ... social media and traditional media. See more

20.01.2022 Can a CEO today get away with a low profile? We say it's risky! The reputation of a company is increasingly inextricably linked to the reputation of the CEO. If there are two equally competing companies, and one has a high profile CEO with a good reputation, that will be the winning company. In that situation, the board of the losing company would rightly consider changing CEO. More, a CEO with a good reputation might be able to suffer an adverse event and survive; less so the neighbouring quiet achiever. That same high profile CEO will be doubly equipped to manage the crisis, being already familiar with how to optimise the main mass communication channels to customers, usually media and social media.

19.01.2022 Bushfires, Climate Change, and that Royal Stuff-Up - Should our Government talk about climate change in the middle of catastrophic, deadly bushfires? And, should Prince Andrew have done better in an attempt to clear his name in the Epstein scandal. Yes, and Yes. The time to talk is when people are motivated to listen. Then, it’s what you say and how you say it!

18.01.2022 What should you do when a journalist calls? Here we briefly discuss the techniques we use, including the 7 critical questions you must ask, to ensure you're able to assess whether you should engage with a story.

17.01.2022 Very excited to launch the Alliance for Journalists' Freedom with Peter Greste and Chris Flynn. Purpose to protect media freedom in Australia and advocate for journalist safety globally.

16.01.2022 I love great journalism, reading beautifully written stories, or watching powerful television exposés! I also value it, for the sharing of information, for calling out the corrupt, for making our community stronger. Without journalism, democracy dies. We set up the Alliance for Journalist Freedom (AJF) to strengthen journalism, to reverse on our patch the weakening global trend. In Australia, that means our purpose is to work with governments to ensure legislation protects journalists at a time when a small number of politicians are undermining it, and the public is increasingly cynical. Key to that is a Media Freedom Act.

16.01.2022 Being interviewed and doing it well is hard few can. A common feeling after an interview is that you’ve failed to get your message across, at least as well as you would like. Here is a technique that we’ve found goes some of the way to achieve your goal.

15.01.2022 Coming on the heels of Royal Commissions into the banking industry and institutional responses to sex abuse, our view is that this Royal Commission will be tougher than both. The political climate is harsher, and the public’s tolerance lower.

14.01.2022 Westpac and Prince Andrew, both damaged by child abuse allegations: What can we learn from the CEO and Board of Westpac's collective failure to act sufficiently to stem reputation damage after customers used the bank, undetected, to purchase child abuse material? All this, even after the scathing banking royal commission? And the Royals, in damage control, sin-binning Prince Andrew, even cancelling his birthday party to prevent more damage as committed anti-royalist Jeremy Corbyn battles Boris Johnson for not-so United Kingdom’s top job.

13.01.2022 Trust in business leaders and politicians is low. There are now high expectations on spokespeople to explain themselves and their organisations authentically, clearly and succinctly. Peter Wilkinson and Liam Cox discuss some of the critical tips to help you prepare for the complexities of an interview.

09.01.2022 This inspiring piece by Thomas Friedman at The New York Times is about #collaborativeinnovation by leaders within communities who otherwise might be point-scoring for personal or political advantage...

08.01.2022 With a third royal commission pending, and ABC chaos, plus a series of company crises (Dreamworld, Big Un, Get Swift, CPA) media and public tolerance for rotten corporate culture has all but vanished. Culture is the one way we can unite our organisation behind our business goals and behaviours. It’s sometimes our only competitive advantage. It’s why staff and customers will stay, or leave. A rotten culture definitely holds a company back; a positive culture drives you forward.

06.01.2022 Is ‘Sorry’ overused? Australians, with our healthy level of cynicism, are excellent at spotting a hollow apology. We look for proof of authenticity. So, over the years of work in crisis recovery we’ve learnt to look for three elements in an apology and in many circumstances, the ‘Sorry’ bit is the least important.

05.01.2022 Better press freedom means less corruption and a stronger democracy. The campaign on the front page of every paper in the country on Monday is about the public’s right to information that keeps a check on people in power; as Don Chip famously said, Keep the bastards honest. The AFP raids, and the outrage that followed, brought this into sharp focus. Since then two government inquiries are underway to consider a rebalancing of the importance of security services that keep us safe and the equal importance that we all know what’s going on press freedom. www.journalistsfreedom.com

03.01.2022 Learning from Labor's Campaign: CEOs, corporate affairs professionals, and people who simply want to get ahead can learn a lot about issues management and crisis from watching politicians. Labor’s review on why it lost the Australian federal election is now public, and a valuable document because it's brutal. What can we learn?

02.01.2022 Three lessons for CEOs from watching ScoMo’s missteps over recent days. Leaders, up-and-coming leaders, and advisors can learn a lot about communicating by watching politicians, because they are constantly pressured to explain themselves. We can also learn a lot about how to work with journalists. At some stage you may want to reference at least the first couple of minutes of the PM’s ABC interview with David Speers - https://ab.co/2FLZQHX

01.01.2022 How much time are you spending on media - 5, 7, 11 hours/day? What about your customers? Some useful & thought-provoking data for leaders and communication professionals. #publicrelations #ceos #corporateaffairs #publicaffairs #leadership

01.01.2022 What can CEOs and Corporate Affairs professionals learn from Westpac’s mistakes? There are more layers to it than simply a lesson from the school-for-slow-learners. Beyond replacing the top echelon, there’s building a culture that encourages whistleblowers, there’s creating ways to track culpability, and there’s the rapidly changing role of Corporate Affairs who are the folks meant to be skilled at protecting reputations, and the role of the media
